Hi, we've just pushed a new release to the beta group (3.3). This is a smaller update than the last one and includes the removal of the top banner advert on the home page and the showing of star ratings in review type cards.  Also we have made some improvement to the way we implement caching that should make things quicker, as well as putting in place some internal support for the upcoming elections.

We've also put in place a number performance and stability fixes in this build.

As always, please let us know if you find any issues either here or via apps.feedback@theguardian.com as your feedback is always valuable to us.

Thanks

I suppose it's possible that The Falling is a dreamlike tale about 5 tiny yellow triangles, but I suspect something has gone awry with the star ratings?

Thank you. I hope the bug which doesn't let you specify a download time for offline downloads has been/would be resolved as well.

Hi everyone,

We've just pushed out a new beta release which introduces several new features.  Articles that you have read will now be slightly greyed out on the home and section pages, so you can clearly distinguish what content you've already engaged with.  Also there is a new look for search on tablets, and a few more material design changes

We've also put in a number of other performance and stability fixes in this build but as ever your feedback is really useful to us, so please leave your comments in this community or email us at apps.feedback@theguardian.com

Thanks

Hi thanks for letting us know about this, it was caused by having a football match card on the homepage.
I'm just about to release a fix for this problem.

Fixes the problem of adverts overlaying content

Fixes a problem which could prevent the widget from updating

Various other fixes and enhancements

As ever, let us know if you find any issues either here or via apps.feedback@theguardian.com

Does anyone else have issues with reading while there no data signal? I download overnight then try to read on the tube... This used to work but now the app goes nowhere when it starts.

I'm assuming it's the absence of data, but maybe not

3.2.1.33 seems a lot more resilient to being out of signal, so whatever you did seemed to work! Thanks Rupert!

Hi everyone, we've just released version 3.2 to the beta group, so this should be with you in the next hour or so

We've made some big changes around Search for this release, so please take a look and let us know what you think. This is very much a first increment of the redesigned Search, so any feedback is hugely welcome, and will help us refine the new functionality

We've also put in several fixes around offline reading, so get in touch if you experience any problems

As ever, thanks very much for continuing to take part in this group, all your comments and feedback are greatly appreciated

Looks good so far, someone else noted on a previous comment thread that it's be good to get chronological sorting added to the search results.

The only bit I have to complain about is the constant surprise additions to the home screen. It'd be great for there to be some sort of dialogue asking me if I want bits added, rather than discovering it's there at the bottom or sometimes at the top. 'Take Part' appeared today with 'around the world' and I don't quite get why they get automatically added.

When commenting, the cut, copy and paste tools are not visible. I only know they're there because I accidentally pressed there after selecting some text. Upon closely examining the screen, it's just possible to make them out. For comparison, I've shown an image of where they are in an article

While I've got you, when replying to a comment in an article, the comment text is truncated. I'm not sure whether this is by design though. And clicking links in comments doesn't work

Hi, we've just pushed out an update to the previous beta which fixes the issues identified with that build (advert placeholders in articles for subscribers and the erroneous 'comments closed' message).

It also introduces a new feature, saved page synchronisation.

Starting with this build any articles which you add to your 'Saved for later' section are backed up and synchronised across any device you sign in to.

There are a couple of limitations with this at the moment: Firstly it currently only works with Android devices (iOS support is on its way very soon) and secondly it may take up to an hour for devices to sync.

This last limitation is so we can ensure we don't overwhelm our servers, and we are actively working to make sync as near to instantaneous as possible.

As always, please use this new feature and let us know what you think, your feedback is very valuable to us.

The system has been designed in such a way that this will be possible in future but it is not on the roadmap for desktop at the moment.

I've been trying to live with this new version of the app for about a year now and still find it doesn't work properly: v slow to load; clunky; misinterprets your touch (eg you are trying to swipe down but it thinks you have clicked on an article); downloads with blurry text which you then have to sit and wait to crystallise into recognisable type. The BBC app, meanwhile, works fine. Over the whole of breakfast I can manage to read just about one Guardian article, whereas with the previous app you could just zip around between news stories with the touch of a finger. Is there any possibility of reviewing / renewing the whole thing to re-use the older technology which, not to put too fine a point on it, actually seemed to work much better?

In the comments section of any article, changing from "Oldest first" to "Newest first" does not actually cause the latest comments to be listed first; the oldest comments are still displayed first.

I'm on ver. 3.3.57 of the Guardian app. Thanks.

Here is a quick video of a possible bug. When I click the add a section (say football) to my Homepage I find myself taken to my profile page. If I press the profile button it takes me back to the section with added to home message. App version 3.3.57 using Nexus 4 on Android 5.0.1

It doesn't seem that the beta app works with Google Now's new cards feature. Anyone else seeing it on theirs?

Any chance of homepage customisation being synchronised yet?

Is it possible to sync home page customisations between devices when signed in via Google +?

Hi, thanks for expressing an interest, it helps us to prioritise work. This is definitely on our todo list but we don't have a definite date for for it yet.

The app gets better and better but I've noticed ads with audio on by default in the last few days. Is this new? Pretty annoying to be honest.

Hi, we've just pushed out a new beta release which allows you to download podcasts for offline listening.

To use this feature, go to a podcast and click 'Download audio' from the action menu. The audio file will then be downloaded and the article will be added to your saved pages for ease of access.

There are a number of other performance and stability fixes in this build, and as ever if your feedback is really useful to us, please leave any comments in this community or email us at apps.feedback@theguardian.com

Thanks!
