A fantastic image of an Athenian (Αθηναίος) hoplite (οπλίτη) from the 'Sparta: War of Empires' game. The emblem on the shield is the sacred owl of Athena (ιερή κουκουβάγια της Αθηνάς), thereby identifying the city-state to which this warrior belonged.

One point of interest - the hoplite, which is defined as a heavily-armed infantryman, used a shield apron which would be attached to the lower portion of the shield. It would extend the area of protection, so that the impact of any arrows could be minimized or even deflected.

An excellent illustration of a Macedonian warrior known as an hypaspist (Ὑπασπιστής).

This elite infantryman of the Macedonian army differed in that they fought in a unit next to the king and also, in the armor and weapons illustrated in the image. For example, the phalangite who fought in the famous phalanx of the Macedonian infantrymen carried the sarissa (spear) that had to be held with both hands, and carried a much smaller shield than the warrior depicted below. Essentially the hypaspist marched into battle appearing more like the hoplites of the classical period of Greece.

A fantastic illustration of an Athenian hoplite (mid-4th century BC).

The warrior is wearing a muscle cuirass (chestplate) which is made of bronze and instead of the more familiar Corinthian, a Thracian-Attic type helmet. In his right hand the secondary weapon if the spear broke during battle. The sword which was known as a kopis (κοπίς) was used for slashing rather than stabbing.

An image of an Athenian hoplite (οπλίτη) in the foreground with the iconic Parthenon in the background on the citadel of the Acropolis in Athens.

The warrior is depicted wearing the muscle cuirass and with the Corinthian helmet titled back. The helmet was brought forward prior to engaging the enemy so that the whole face was covered. Unfortunately visibility and hearing were impaired.

The wonderful artwork is of an ancient Greek hoplite of the Graeco-Persian Wars era (490-479 BC). During the Battle of Salamis in September, 480 BC, there were 14 hoplites on each of the Athenian triremes.

In many instances, the sword known as a makhaira (μάχαιρα) was used for the hand-to-hand combat on the vessels.

The illustration is by Christos Giannopoulos for Periscopio Publications.

A spectacular illustration of a hoplite from the city-state of Plataea, wearing what is believed to have been indicative of the panoply worn by the Plataean warrior who fought at Marathon (Μάχη τοῦ Μαραθῶνος) in 490 BC and the Battle of Plataea (Μάχη των Πλαταιών) in 479 BC.
