How to fix SQL Server performance issues?

In a brand new environment, everything works fine. After a while, your users start to complain - dialogues open slower than they used to, generating a report takes an hour and it used to take only a couple of minutes... How to determine whether your SQL Server performance issues are related to Transact-SQL code?

It's time for SQL Server performance monitoring and tuning

Use SQL Server Profiler, a tool that runs a SQL Server trace and shows what statements are running on SQL Server and various useful metrics such as duration, number of reads, number of writes

Start with tracing just these two events:
• Stored Procedures - RPC:Completed
• TSQL - SQL:BatchCompleted

This will trace all completed batches (sets of multiple statements) and metrics related to the batch

Now, open the trace file and check out the longest running statements. These are the ones you should start your tuning with in order to improve performance
