Ferry Building Walker
The Critique:
A well lit diagonal line directs my eye into the image. The walker, graces in stunning light, is nicely fixed in place with tall, horizontal walls on one side and the light and sign posts on the other. Glorious winter colors abound in rich hues of pink and blue and gold. Light bounces and reflects, capturing time as it passes. Spatial relationships work well with good balance of elements. The added texture creates a painterly look and touches the heartstrings as I look at this photograph and feel the day.
What I had learned:
When I shoot colors and textures from the scene, it can enrich the original shot giving it an impressionistic look and feel.

The Critique:

Pier Walk
Dreamy impressionistic style matches the mood of walkers on one of San Francisco’s picturesque piers. Lovely diagonal flow cradles the walkers with a row of streetlights – giving a gentle visual push forward. The repetition adds strength and a vertical pull to the photograph. Soft, wistful colors are displayed beautifully in the warm afternoon light. Nice spatial relationships and good balance within the frame. I like the direct perspective – just slightly low – just enough different for additional interest.
What I had learned:
I like the capture the feel of a place so that when I look at the photographs in coming years, I can remember the sounds, the smells, the ambience of a place.

The Critique:
The warm glow of late sun permeates this photograph. Light and dark conspire to form wonderful leading lines of diagonal drama. Rich colors make an immediate impact and add a vivid energy to the scene. The atmosphere is thick with texture – I can almost feel it. Wonderful spatial relationships between the people and buildings. The sidewalk, with its textured pattern, firmly anchors the shot. I love how light crisscrosses forming X’s and triangles which add more visual interest. The slight motion adds a nice impressionistic touch.

The Critique:
An intended double exposure gives a palatable feeling of chaos on the street. Different perspectives in each exposure give a slightly different look at what’s happening on the street. Drama is increased with duality. I like the blocks of lines and shapes. Horizontal opposes string vertical. Nature counterbalances manmade objects and people, as always, pull and hold the eye. Nice vivid colors balance with the composition. Even in the bedlam there is good balance and a sense of spatial relations.
What I had learned:
Play with the camera and learn. Knowledge spills over into conventional work.

Illuminated Direction
The Critique:
Stunning light leads the way as the figures follow it toward the open gate. Slight motion gives and energetic vibe – a sense of something happening. Nice patterns and textures add interest. Good spatial relationships. I like the triangle of figures – they are an anchor point in the shot. The implied lines are diagonal and add their own drama as do the unconventional colors. It’s got nice perspective – looking slightly down – unobserved.

Light is generous here, gracing the people and building , creating a subliminal path to follow. Shapes repeat and patterns form adding strength and energy. Spatial relationships are strong. Time passes and the story is told.
What I had learned:
Let the shutter speed slow down and take a deep breath or two. Forget about the tripod and let life happen.
