There's a reason why kids eat their vegetables, and you can apply it to business.

Shared publicly -Failing to #negotiate is another way we waste our money carelessly. We all want to buy great and valuable products but it shouldn’t cost us a fortune. One tip though is that it becomes much easier to negotiate when you have a definite goal. Read more here:

Maybe it's funny to you - foreigners that the price in Vietnam in some places is different for locals and foreigners. Sometimes, you might be overcharged twice or triple compared with the true price. So you had better read this.

Shared publicly -A Standard of Fairness
When you are negotiating anything, there must be a standard of fairness. What is fair? How do you know that what you are asking for is fair?
I always point to a standard of fairness when I negotiate. The more/better evidence that you have that supports your idea of fairness the better. Ideally the evidence should come from a third party source.
I negotiate injury accident cases and often point to jury verdicts and published settlements for similar cases. When I produce these documents to the insurance company adjusters, they have a hard time justifying their low settlement offers.
Finding the standard of fairness is hard work...it is the preparation part of negotiating. But it makes a huge difference.
Recommended Reading: Getting Past No, William Ury

Hey +Stefan Suurmeijer . Why is he willing to negotiate about this and not about copyright-law? ;-)
Yes Eric: I'd say I'd like to negotiate with you about your business practices but would you comply? I somehow do not think so...
Ok, I also believe that international tax systems should be reformed, but maybe in a direction you and Google wouldn't like so much.

Oh, they are trying, but how sincere are they?
There is an interesting body of commentary on Google's behavior (on taxes in this instance) at Tax Justice Network. Example: http://goo.gl/8kkOH (note: Google cooperates with local tax agencies to catch other tax 'evaders'...)
The same applies to Google's efforts to re-create copyright. They have understated their influence from the beginning. Most nations/people have no way they can defend themselves against a corporation like Google. This understating is obtuse, to put it mildly. I'd rather call it cheating and hypocritical. Their reaction to a German proposal for an Internet Copyright speaks volumes: http://goo.gl/G3FMa. (notice that some are taken in and that the proposal was weakened before it passed legislature). Google is certainly trying to address problems with copyrighted material, but not enough. Their algorithm is still too thick to catch the 2.5 million breaches of Copyright Law that they are being told about every week. I'd surmise that most of those would be mentioned by organizations (the RIAA for instance) so the question is valid how much more breaches are missed by others, i.e. the small-time artist who has created something.
Last (but not least): a corporation that is able to consider building a 'World Brain' should have no problem creating a system where copyright is protected in a legal fashion and royalties are paid in an equally legal fashion. Of course it is their right to prefer not paying taxes or royalties, as it is their right to use arguments for that that don't convince a large part of the world. I'm certainly not convinced of their 'well-meaning'. Google has all the traits of an organization that has had it too much their way. I'd think that is a danger to us (consumers, producers of copyrighted materials) and to Google as well (arrogance and a tendency to underestimate its own might tend to be punished, in the long run).
So I think Eric Schmidt should sing a more modest tune, for his own (companies) sake as well as that of others.

Shared publicly -Have you ever been involved in a tough negotiation with someone who has more power or skill than you? If so, here is a quick question to ask that person when they give you their irrational price or demand: The question: "Why is that fair?"....ask the question, then just listen. You will gain knowledge that can help you overcome their power.
