Minority Report + Kinect = Leap gestural spatial interfaceWhen I first watched this video earlier today it had around 300 views. It now boasts 50,000+ views and climbing. The reason: it looks like John Underkoffler's Minority Report interface — with your bare hands.
Leap says that its spatial interface technology is
"more accurate than a mouse, as reliable as a keyboard and more sensitive than a touchscreen ... 200 times more accurate than anything else on the market ... can distinguish your individual fingers and track your movements down to a 1/100th of a millimeter." Those are some impressive claims.
I want to believe that Leap is as good as its claims. But I wonder how practical it will be given the "gorilla arm" problem: Fatigue and pain caused by holding the arms away from the body for extended periods of time. Humans just aren't built to do that. One would need superhuman strength and endurance to use such a spatial interface for an entire work day.
Using an interface designed around fine, repetitive finger movements and motor control is begging for a repetitive strain injury.
The lack of tactile feedback for tasks such as writing, drawing or painting seemingly make it less than ideal for such tasks. Still, it's an intriguing idea.
And, yes, I pre-ordered it before I finished watching the video. :)
