Yippee ki-yay! If you could shrink down to straddle a width of just about 3-4mm, you might be tempted to ride off into the sunset on this Saddleback Caterpillar (Acharia stimulea) before it eventually pupates and becomes a much less interesting looking brown moth. But, since it's covered with venomous, urticating spines (which is the scientific way to say that if you touch it, you are going to get stuck, it’s going to hurt a lot, and you may feel nauseous), it's better to appreciate this caterpillar from afar.
As photographed, Saddleback Caterpillar is walking away from us. Both the front and the back ends have a yellow spot at the top center, but only the back end has the two yellow “eye spots.” This one was about 13 mm (~ 0.5 inches) long, but they grow to about twice that size.
This fine example of danger wrapped in a beautiful package was observed around 8:30 in the morning on August 15, 2018 in a garden in Connecticut.

An Eastern Harvestman (Leiobunum vittatum)... Zoom in to see close-up details.
This Eastern Harvestman (Leiobunum vittatum) more than earns its more colloquial name of being a “Daddy Long Legs,” but, its leg count is just a bit off. More specifically, It should have 8 legs rather than the 6 seen here. While the photo is framed further out in order to show the length of the legs, the photo is high-resolution and you are invited to zoom in to see much more detail.
Missing two legs didn’t appear to be an issue, as it was still able to scurry along the ground and in and out of crevices quite nimbly. We can’t know for sure just how it lost those legs, but Harvestmen have the remarkable ability to make their legs fall off on demand. These legs will then continue to twitch, sometimes for as long as an hour, in what is thought to be an adaptation to distract and allow them to escape from predators. But, they won’t do this with the pair of legs in the second position from the front, as those legs aid not just in locomotion, but serve as sensory organs like antennae.
While they have (or should have) 8 legs, and belong to the Arachnids (Class Arachnida), they are not Spiders, and have a quite a number of differences. For one thing, they only have a single pair of eyes (the two black spheres visible atop the body), rather than the 8-12 eyes possessed by spiders. They also only have a single fused body, rather than the separate abdomen and cephalothorax of a spider. Unlike spiders, they don’t have the ability to spin silk, but they do produce a sticky substance that they use with their pedipalps (a tiny pair of “hands” in front of their mouth) to capture prey. For use in cocktail party conversation, be sure to mention that Spiders are of the Order Araneae, whereas Harvestmen are in the Order Opiliones.
This fine Harvestman (and many more of its kin) was seen on August 10, 2018, just before noon, at the Squaw Peak summit while hiking to the top of Monument Mountain in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

Hi all, happy Hump Day! My new pond finally has enough water in it to run the waterfall. I have these Twelve Spot Dragonflies that are visiting as well. This one perched right in front of me on the head of a spent Penstemon flower so of course I had to take a shot. This is straight out of the camera. I loved the bokeh in it and #BokehisGoodAnyDay . Hope you enjoy the image and have a great day!
