Looking Glass Falls

I’m going to play off of the fall theme of the photo from a couple of days ago, but add in a splash of water! This is Looking Glass Falls, in North Carolina, as seen from the bottom. This waterfall is easily accessible to all, even having a ramp to make it wheelchair friendly. My perspective required a little climbing over the rocks at the base but, if you just want to catch a great view, it doesn’t get any easier than this!

Like the previous shot on the Parkway, this is a 5-shot HDR blending. It was finished up with Nik Color Efex.

The Big Reach.........

It is great fun to watch sloths as they navigate their way through the trees, it's truly amazing how slowly they really move! This guy was no exception, it must have taken at least five minutes for him to reach over to that next branch and move a few feet... In fact he is so slow that he missed #InternationalSlothDay  yesterday!
Have a wonderful weekend everyone and be sure to go outside to enjoy some nature, it's amazing out there...

Fall Creek Falls

While in Tennessee last week, I visited Fall Creek Falls State Park. There are several falls and cascades there, and I want to return with a better sense of what I’d like to photograph next time.

This photo is the upper portion of Fall Creek Falls, billed as the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi. I had previously been photographing several of the falls with my wide angle and a ND filter. However, for this one I used a zoom lens, but didn’t have a ND filter that fit it. So I had to improvise, and close the aperture as tight as possible while setting the ISO to 100, so that I could slow the exposure down.

The Weight of the World

I was intrigued by this guy's posture that I captured trudging through the Charlotte airport.  He must have had a very long day.

Run, Cheetah, Run...

It was truly amazing to be so close to these beautiful animals in full flight.  +Alex Lapidus and I visited Animal Ark, just north of Reno, Nevada ( http://www.animalark.org/ ), a wildlife rehab center. We had a chance to watch from the "blinds" -- basically a waist-high pile of small sticks -- as the cheetahs went racing by chasing a target for exercise.  Their concentration and agility was awesome as they were following their "prey" target (a piece of flapping yellow tape) at great speeds and changing directions around the course.

If you want to see the math on how fast they run and how hard it was to catch them with the camera, see Alex's post here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/104294083885937159989/posts/2wSrpewdBqr  Be sure not to blink or you'll miss them!

B-25 Mitchell

North American Aviation produced the B-25 Mitchell, and it was a common sight throughout all of the war fronts during World War II. The twin-engined bomber received its biggest boost of fame when Lt. Colonel Jimmy Doolittle commanded a group of 16 B-25’s to attack mainland Japan in the months following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The B-25’s used in that raid underwent extensive modifications to lighten their weight and extend their fueling time so they could take off from the USS Hornet.

The B-25 became a very familiar bomber to spot in the Pacific theater because of the fact that it worked well for use in treetop strafing and bombing, despite its intended use as a medium altitude bomber. After the war, B-25’s were still being used in various capacities for close to four decades.

I photographed this B-25 this past weekend at the Winston-Salem Airshow, as it flew by with its bomb bay doors open. I post processed it in both Lightroom and Nik to give it a vintage feel to match the historical history of the B-25.
