Flame Throated Bulbul
Canon Powershot Sx50 HS
Sirsi, Karnataka, India
12 May, 2018
--
The flame-throated bulbul (Pycnonotus gularis) is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is found only in the forests of the Western Ghats in southern India. Formerly included as a subspecies of Pycnonotus flaviventris it has since been elevated to the status of a full species. They are olive backed with yellow undersides, a triangular orange-red throat and a white iris that stands out against the contrasting black head. They are usually seen foraging in groups in the forest canopy for berries and small insects. They have a call often with two or three tinkling notes that can sound similar to those produced by the red-whiskered bulbul.
The flame-throated bulbul keeps in small flocks and feeds on berries, including those of Lantana sp. It inhabits evergreen forests often along streams and valleys. The flame-throated bulbul feeds on fruit and insects,[9] sometime in mixed species foraging flocks.
Populations appear to move seasonally within the Western Ghats

Two Little Lovebirds...
Another view of these beautiful hyacinth macaws from the Pantanal in Brazil. It had just stopped raining, so that's probably why they look a little scruffy. Such amazing birds, it was a wonderful treat to see them doing well in this area with a little help from the locals. Many of the trees they use for nesting have been taken down for farming, but a local project is putting up some nesting boxes to help the birds out and it seems to be helping!
This one is for #newbirdpoker curated this week by +Ramprakash Ram Mohan with a theme of curved beaks and extra points for black/dark beaks - I think these guys definitely qualify!

Striated Heron
Canon Powershot Sx50 HS
Mauritius
13 Aug, 2018
--
The striated heron (Butorides striata) also known as mangrove heron, little heron or green-backed heron, is a small heron, about 44 cm tall. Striated herons are mostly non-migratory and noted for some interesting behavioral traits. Their breeding habitat is small wetlands in the Old World tropics from west Africa to Japan and Australia, and in South America. Vagrants have been recorded on oceanic islands, such as Chuuk and Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marianas and Palau; the bird recorded on Yap on February 25, 1991, was from a continental Asian rather than from a Melanesian population, while the origin of the bird seen on Palau on May 3, 2005 was not clear.
Adults have a blue-grey back and wings, white underparts, a black cap, a dark line extends from the bill to under the eye and short yellow legs. Juveniles are browner above and streaked below.
These birds stand still at the water's edge and wait to ambush prey, but are easier to see than many small heron species. They mainly eat small fish, frogs and aquatic insects. They sometimes use bait, dropping a feather or leaf carefully on the water surface and picking fish that come to investigate.

Nesting Hamerkop
We watched this lovely Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) flying back and forth, building its nest in the shadows of the forest. This image is not from the wild; it was taken in Disney's Animal Kingdom park -- the bird was flying freely, but is not native to the region.

Feathered Friend
Just above Moraine Lake, in Banff National Park, we discovered this beautiful Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus). This is its summer plumage; a couple of months later, it will be completely white for winter.

Coming in for a landing...
I went to visit a Bald Eagle nest here in the bay area a couple of weeks ago. These amazing birds have set up their nest in this huge pine tree right next to an elementary school! Hard to say how they endure the noise when all of those small children are outside playing... Anyway, I hope to go back and visit a couple more times in the next few weeks before the chicks fledge and they move on.
Enjoy your week everyone!!!
