Rufous-necked Hornbill (Aceros nipalensis) - 237

It is a species of hornbill in the northeastern India. Numbers have declined significantly due to habitat loss and hunting, and it has been entirely extirpated from Nepal. It is estimated that there are now less than 10,000 adults remaining. In Arunachal Pradesh, rufous-necked hornbills have been hunted by tribals for their feathers and beak.

Recent initiatives by the Wildlife Trust of India, Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department and other citizens to conserve hornbills, which also target the rufous-necked hornbill, are the Hornbill Nest Adoption Programme, and a programme for replacing the use of real beaks with fibre-made replicas.

It's been devilishly hot here (110˚ last Friday and I don't even live in a desert ... ugh! I gave myself a heatstroke tying to save my garden). This guy looks about how I feel ... ;oD

Well Hello There, Gorgeous -- Cannon Beach, Oregon
I saw this seagull giving himself a critical - and undoubtedly approving - appraisal in the shallows of Cannon Beach one morning. He stared fixedly at the water for a few moments before trundling on along the beach. Quite a fine-looking fellow, I agree... ;)

Sarus crane (Antigone antigone) - 244

The Sarus crane is the tallest flying bird in the world standing 152-156 cm tall with a wingspan of 240cm. It has a predominantly grey plumage with a naked red head and upper neck and pale red legs. Females are smaller, growing to about 35-40kg, while the males grow bigger, up to 40-45kg

Sarus crane numbers have declined greatly in the last century and it has been suggested that the current population is a tenth or less (perhaps 2.5%) of the numbers that existed in the 1850s. The stronghold of the species is in India, where it is traditionally revered and lives in agricultural lands in close proximity to humans. Elsewhere, the species has been extirpated in many parts of its former range. While Indians held the species in veneration, British soldiers in colonial India hunted the bird, calling it the serious.

It is widely believed that the sarus pairs for life and that death of one partner leads to the other pining to death. They are a symbol of marital virtue and in parts of Gujarat, it is a custom to take a newly wed couple to see a pair of sarus cranes. It was noted that killing a bird would lead to its surviving partner trumpeting for many days and it was traditionally believed that the other would starve to death.
