Photo: Project 52 - Week 11 - Spring

I'm behind, and feeling uninspired... This is from last week's theme "Spring" I actually took this last week before the deadline but never uploaded it. Probably because I'm not particularly happy with the photo. I was on a walk with my dog, and there was this unkempt lawn with crocuses popping their heads out. I thought it was a great sign of spring coming. All I had was my cell phone, and I just couldn't make something happen - but here you go anyway.

Ok, well I'm way behind (10 weeks!) on this - so I sat myself down and gave myself a good talking to.  I decided this past weekend would be my weekend to catch back up.  So I made up a list of my missed themes and set out to capture them all (and succeeded!).  I apologize to all you P52ers out there, but you are about to get a barrage of photos from me over the next day or so as I upload them all to my P52 album. So I'm reaching WAY back to fill in the blanks.

This is a photo I took Sunday while hiking with the family.  It's an old, old mining rail, long overgrown and converted to a trail.  I really loved seeing the old ties and concrete blocks with rail spikes sticking out - all being consumed by nature.  The waterfall on the right just cascaded down over the old rail bed and joined the Stilliguamish river on the left.

Photo: Project 52 Week 13 "Playing with Light"

I actually captured this image this past weekend but didn't upload til now. This week's theme gave me an excuse to try something I've wanted to try and learn how to do... off camera flash. I know it's not perfect, but I was pretty happy with the results as it was my first attempt. I used this African carving as a model, and was shooting for a dark mysterious shadowed look. I think off camera lighting is going to open a whole new world of ideas for me - all I have to do now is practice.

I was up on San Juan Island this past weekend visiting friends. They have a lovely view off the west side of the island towards Victoria, BC. Here's what it looks like at night... This isn't sunset, it's just the city's lights lighting up the sky over the calm Haro Straight.

This is a photo I took on Easter Sunday.  My wife and I aren't particularly religious folks, so we started a tradition with friends that we ended up calling the "Heathen Hike" where we go hiking on Easter Sunday and eat Easter colored cupcakes.  I suppose you could say the outdoors is our church...
