Photo: Not even Superstorm Sandy could halt the annual Mermaid Parade in NYC.  Mermaids and Mermen of all shapes and sizes participated in the 31st annual event that that signals the start of summer for roughly 1 million participants and spectators.Photo: The Coney Island Mermaid Parade - 2013Photo: The Mermaid Parade is a bit of an institution in New York. After Super Storm Sandy, the Coney Island area was having a hard time recovering, and the Mermaid Parade was at risk of not happening. What to do? Turn to Kickstarter, of course. The good folks who run the Parade managed to raise $200,000 via Kickstarter to keep the parade on this year. It's my second year to go, and I swear, there are times when there are more photographers than mermaids. Here, 4 mermaids stopped at the local taco food truck prior to the parade.Photo: One more from #MermaidParade2013 taken before the parade as one team prepped.Photo: Photo: Photo: Photo: Photo: Photo: Photo: Photo: Photo: Photo: Photo: Photo: Photo:
