Photo: "Guardian Of Light"
Before I run out the door for a doctor appointment, I thought I would share this image with you all. Photographed at Red Rocks Park, this tree has always had me fascinated and I have always wanted to capture it in good light. I finally got my chance with light that was so alive and brilliant, I actually had to pull back the saturation a great deal in Lightroom. You have to love good golden hour sunlight.
I think this image is also rather personal for me, it represents a lot of what I have been going through lately, I haven't really spoken about it publicly and maybe in times I will but it represents strength and how all alone it feels, facing the odds and standing tall. I hope you all like it.

A couple mornings ago I decided to head over to Red Rocks Park (the home of the world famous amphitheater) as it has been awhile since my last visit. I got there in time for sunrise and I was completely wowed by how green everything was. Absolutely lush and backed up by the rock formations it resembled something out of the Jurassic era. The sky had some wonderful color about it with deep blues and pinks which really made for a nice contrast. It was simply a gorgeous morning!

A couple days ago we had a pretty awesome spring snowstorm here in Colorado. I know a lot of photographers avoid this sort of thing with heavy wet snow but I love being able to photograph in it having found that often times it adds an atmosphere that I wouldn't otherwise be able to get with my camera. It can also lend itself to some very creative images too. I really just liked the feeling this whole scene had, something about it with it's heavy mood just got my attention.

Thoughts--- A few days ago I headed out to Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR here in Denver to catch the sunrise and do some wildlife photography. I froze my keester off taking this photograph, big time. I couldn't help it though, the sky had me captivated with how the sun was shrouded behind the clouds and giving off this hot pink glow. It's kind of funny, as I photographed this I got to thinking about how content I felt at the time and just how relaxed I felt to be able to watch the scene unfold. I did get a little frustrated though, the light and dynamics of the scene were changing so rapidly that I was unable to keep up since I was shooting long exposures. It happens I guess but I came away with a handful of shots which I am really happy with.

Thoughts--- Now & then I am really happy I am a photographer because I get to see and witness so many things that people are either take for granted or never get a chance to really see, so many beautiful things. I imagine most in metro Denver haven't any idea that Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR even exists or if they do, they have no interest in going there. I'm not sure what to think about that other than I can't imagine doing that myself for this place has become my little haven for tranquility. Listening to the Coyote's sing while watching and a photographing the sunrise over Lake Ladora? I am all about it....

Located at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Lake Ladora comes alive with the light & colors of the morning sunrise. As many times I have been out here, I wasn't aware that this area even existed with this vantage point and needless to say I now have a little favorite spot to kick back and watch the sky from now on, let alone photograph it. Heck, they even have a park bench set up so you can relax and drink your coffee while taking it all in. Sometimes it really pays off being a photographer. What a way to start the morning and the day!

The last few days have been, well...hmmm...what's the word I am looking for, perhaps worrisome and very stressful. I don't want to talk a whole lot about it but after numerous visits to my doctor and the ER, it's safe to say that I am faced with a very big challenge in life. The simple fact is either I change or I cease to exist in a nutshell. It has made me really think, examine and ponder a lot of things in life the past 96 hours, more than anyone really should. In some ways I just want to throw my hands in the air and give up and another side of me wants to fight as hard as I can knowing that it won't be easy. I actually thought about my photography during this time and did a lot of pondering with that too. I ultimately came to the conclusion that even though I want to share my images with the world, what matters to me is the experience itself of clicking the shutter and the making of an image, everything else is almost secondary. I guess I will be spending as much time as I can out in nature, studies have after all shown that there are a lot of healing properties associated with it and right now, my mind, body, soul and heart really could use that. get off the computer people and go get some air, sitting here can kill ya, trust me.

I have been spending a great deal of time out at Rocky Mountain Arsenal national Wildlife refuge here in Denver, Colorado. I really like this place a great deal and each time I am here I see something new and different that I didn't see before. It offers a nice refreshing take for landscape photographers than the usual mountain scenes we know to well here in Colorado and the wildlife is just beaming here. I have been spending anywhere from 2-5 days a week here and it has given me all sorts of images which I am happy with. This was photographed on a chilly morning as the fog was starting to lift at sunrise. I loved the light I was getting and how there was still areas of shadows in the grasslands. You know, it is really quiet out here and I think that is another thing which draws me here, a place to get away and enjoy the silence, offline away from everything. Welcome to my new favorite place!

~feel free to share it~

12-21-2012 The day in which the Mayan's said the world would end. I decided to wake up early and head to Cherry Creek State Park here in Colorado to hopefully catch a good sunrise and photograph Bald Eagles. While the Eagle's were no where to be found, mother nature gave me a gift which more than made up for it. A sky which was simply amazing and colors which I absolutely fell in love with. Looking to the west, as shot here, it was simply amazing with the clouds reflecting the rising sun, moving as if they were dancing in the sky. If the world was ending then this was the way in which I envisioned, maybe an asteroid or two as well.

Photo thoughts--- Standing here watching the sunrise, my hands going numb in spite of me having gloves on, I was struggling just trying to push the remote shutter release. I think the general public at large must think us photographers are a bunch of crazy people. Waking up at ungodly hours, freezing our butts off, hardly making a dime off our images much of the time. You know what though, I may not be rich but I have seen a lot of things which most people never will. For that, I am thankful. It's that very thought which was going through my head as I took this image, watching the sky being painted by the coming dawn like a tapestry of color had been pulled over it and while most of the world was in a slumber asleep in a warm bed. I sat and watched as the light and color painted Pikes Peak and how it seemed to shimmer against the lake at Cherry Creek State Park. Sometimes rewards aren't measured in terms of financial gain but measured in things which the eye sees and the hearts beats to.

Photographed this landscape a few days ago at the world famous Red Rocks Park in Denver, Colorado. Yes that Red Rocks, where the amphitheater is...where many famous concerts have been held like U2 - Live at Red Rocks (1983) PART 1 It so beautiful here and I have always loved the landscape at this location. The colors seem to really come alive. When I photographed this scene the sun had just risen and it was painting the clouds back to the north west with highlights of pink...just a really beautiful scene. You then had the light of golden hour saturating everything which just added even more to it all. There is a lot to see and study here as a photographer here if you take your time. Why more people don't shoot here is beyond me. I know one thing though, I love it!

Photo thoughts--- This time of the year can be absolutely magical in Colorado when Fall begins to give way to Winter. I photographed this landscape on one of our first snowfalls on the season at Chatfield State Park. The foliage in spots was still holding on to Autumn and the atmosphere was just astounding. I found this little spot of a barely moving creek and noticed the reflections and how it just added that finishing touch for what I was looking for. It was so quiet, so tranquil and so still…

Thoughts & this is going to be deep--- Although I didn't really say this when I posted this image on facebook, this is rather a personal piece to me and yes I photographed it with the intent of showing it's conceptual side about it. It's rather hard to explain but many times I feel lost as a photographer, in a sea surrounded by people who do the same thing as I do and how so many seem to have broken through with their images while I struggle each and every single day. It gets frustrating, so very frustrating to see happen all around you and at times I honestly just want to throw all my equipment to the ground, my hands in the air, call it a day and say "I give up". I'm not going to lie and say it's easy because you know what? It's hard as hell. Now I am not wanting this to come across as some sort of pity party but at the same time when you see so much going on around you, people traveling all over the globe and doing something which you have always dreamed of ever doing, them sharing their happiness all the time, it starts to get to you after awhile when you struggle for a long while as a photographer. It's just flat out tough to take and you start to really wonder if your number will get called and if it ever will. You see, that is why I photographed this scenic and that is what it's about. That tree represented a lot to me when I saw it and how there was nothing else around it. It stood there in the snow, one of the last trees holding on to Autumn and it's leaves so late in the season that the first snow storms have already happened. Standing there, not giving up and holding on in spite of the time of year it is. Boy, I could sure relate to that tree, could I ever. If I have one bit of advice I could give to people who have aspirations of being a photographer and trying to really actually pursue their dreams it would be simply to keep it real and don't forget where you came from because a lot do and it has a profound effect on others around you, whether you know it or not.

Cottonwood trees reflect the rising sun against the deep blue skies of Colorado at Cherry Creek State park at the height of Autumn. I loved how frosty the landscape and grasses were on this morning, "fresh" would be a good word. The light just made the color absolutely glow and come alive. i did a lot of photographing at out state parks this year after the color started to dwindle in the mountains and boy am I ever glad I did!

Photo thoughts--- Well, I am just about to run out the door in a minute to a location I have never been to before in hopes of being able to photograph some great wildlife but before I did I thought that I would share this image with you all. Photographed this past Fall in Rocky Mountain National Park, it is utterly amazing how many images I took this year and it is utterly awesome how overwhelmed I feel at trying to even make a dent in processing them all. I wonder if any of my fellow photographers often feel the same? It is, by all accounts a very daunting task trying to wade through some 32,000+ images. The backlog never ends it seems as I continue to photograph as much as I possibly can and while at times I really wish I could stop the clock for awhile just to get caught up, I gladly wouldn't have it any other way. I have always said that the taking of the photograph is only part of the joy, the other is the experience it very self, something which is impossible to communicate in a simple photograph. As far as this image and technical stuff? Shot in HDR in camera with my A550, Fotodiox CPL and Grad ND. I Hope you all enjoy it.

Thoughts on the photo--- One of the things which I love to do is use my 400mm lens and get in close to scenes, panning to see things which the human eye otherwise can not see. This is one of those types of landscapes, that was basically invisible to the naked eye. When I was checking out the landscape, this composition really caught my eye and how the light was dancing against the freshly covered in frost and snow Pine trees. Watching the snow clouds come over the mountain top and the sunlight as it worked it’s magic, playing peekaboo through the cloud cover…it was pretty darn magical! Photographed in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.

Friday randomness--- I think my head is about to explode. I am really starting to feel just straight up overwhelmed with trying to manage everything that is social networking 101. I like the new MySpace so far, I think it is a breath of fresh air however it just another site that will require more time yet again. #Communities on G+ seem rather neat but I am also seeing it as having the ability to seriously fracture the photography community as a whole. As it is, G+ is VERY clique-ish. I know I am far from the first person to ever say that...I just worry that it will divide and conquer even more and once again, it is just another thing to manage. There really are times when I wish there was just one single site for everything, like a "deviantFaceFlickrTwitAgram+" thing or something. I don't know or understand how people with massive following actually manage everything, I just don't. Heck, I have a huge following on deviantART and I can't even begin to mange that 1 single site, let alone half a dozen like the others do. I wonder if they have a secret army of robots or something. how you do that and manage to actually be a photographer and process images beats me....I can't wrap my head around it.

Photo thoughts--- This was photographed this past Friday at the start of our second leg of the Fall In Colorado photo meetup. This little spot along the shores of Lake estes in Estes Park, Colorado is one of my favorite little hidden gems. Often times it is completely overlooked as most people rush to head into rocky Mountain National Park and tend to miss this area completely. However, each and every time I have been here it has never failed to yield me results with some great photo opportunities and this time was of no exception. We had some amazing light and clouds to work with which pretty much left us all speechless. I photographed this with a long exposure aiming to really get the movement of the clouds as they swept by over head. I have had a very busy and very incredible Autumn thus far and I am looking forward to getting back out to photograph more of it!

Tomorrow morning I will be here once again for the second part of our annual photo photo meetup!

Regardless of what a lot of photographers say, there is a great deal of "luck" involved with getting a photo. I am not really sure if there is any greater luck than the weather itself. I only have control over my camera, things like fstop, exposure, shutter speeds, lenses, filters, deciding when to click the shutter. Often times I am presented with skies which are completely cloudless when I wanted clouds for instance and every once in awhile mother nature gives me something to where I am literally screaming at the sky in excitement.

Fog in Colorado is a very uncommon thing and for this, I just happened to pick the right place to have as a meeting point for the first day of our annual "Fall In Colorado Photo Meetup" this past Friday; the shores of Lake Estes in Estes Park. We were presented with a scene that was almost unworldly at times with the rising sun backlighting the fog and creating an almost surreal glow about it. I just wish we had weather like this a great deal more often! The title of the piece...it's breast cancer awareness month and the colors seemed to fit that quite well.
If you like it, feel free to share it!

It's hard to believe that I've reached the half way point until Fall is officially here once again in Colorado. I have a lot planned for this Autumn and I am hoping to make a lot of it become a reality, we'll see. This was photographed along Guanella Pass road before sunrise. Photo thoughts--- Welcome to Geneva Creek, Colorado.
You know, this is rather a different sort of photo for me, not really in terms of subject matter but rather in terms of technique on how I photographed the scene. generally as a rule of thumb for a scenic like this I would shoot a long exposure to really give the water a very silky look & feel. this time I decided to try something a tad different and it was rather more out of necessity than anything. I was finished  shooting this area & all packed up when I looked back and saw this staring at me. All my gear buried in the car sans my camera which was around my neck and my Puffin Pad which was easy to get to. I grabbed it, set it on the hood of the car, placed my camera lens on it and looked at the exposure to see what I could get. It read in around 1/3 a sec at iso 800. I thought to myself, "with steady shot on and with the Puffin Pad, I bet I can make this work enough to where the water is sort of soft and yet has some detail. Click!"

Yesterday was my birthday and I decided to spend it doing what I do best. While most people were asleep, I photographed this.
I think that there are times when you say "Wow! I am really lucky and fortunate that I am a photographer!" This was one of these times. Photographed yesterday morning during "blue hour" (the period before sunrise) I stood on the shores of Lake Estes in Estes Park, Colorado and watched the fog do it's dance and listened to the Elk bugling close by. It is easy to look at this image and say "beautiful photo" but it is hard to relate without trying to put it into words with what I am saying. There are times when we photographers just really find our soul, our calling, when we feel inside us like "this is home, this is where I belong" and this image shows that to you all. That is exactly how I felt standing here yesterday morning during this long exposure shot. Welcome to my world.

This shot was taken just a few days ago at Brainard Lake, Colorado. For once everything was still....seems like it never is here. I photographed this before dawn and really like the cool color palette of the scene. It's around 14 seconds as far as exposure goes. Photo thoughts--- Most people when hear the words "forest fire" or "wildfire" think of very destructive things and they certainly are. One thing I have learned is that they can also be things of beauty as well. Recently here in Colorado we have had smoke pouring into our state which is being carried by the jet stream over a thousand miles away from fires burning in the Pacific Northwest. At times it has been quite thick and filling the sky with a very heavy blanket of haze. When I photographed this sunrise, it was 100% clear, not a single cloud in the entire sky. Generally the kind of thing landscape photographers cringe at. However, because of the smoke, it created a scene that looked like something out of a Sci-Fi movie about Mars from the 50s. It was utterly eerie, even turning the sun shades of pink, salmon, red and other colors. Surreal is a good word. I decided to shoot a long exposure of it to smooth out the water at Cherry Creek State Park reservoir and to concentrate on how the light was so subtle. It was a unique scene and one which I won't soon forget!

Photo thoughts--- I was getting ready to pack up and leave from shooting the sunflower fields at sunset as the light was pretty much done when I remembered a shot I took last year out at the fields in which I bolted on an ND8 and did a longer exposure. I managed to get a mixture of the lights of the city reflecting against the clouds along with the dying color of the sunset which gave a rather wild glow and crazy color. I figured what the heck, I will try it again and low and behold, once again I managed to snag me a shot which did the same thing. It is kind of neat catching the motion of the clouds and that glow of color... I guess I am always on the lookout for creative ways to shoot, something which sort of pushes my creative thinking process. Now the question is why it took me a dang year at almost the same location to remember shooting like this? Slow down, breathe and shoot! :)

Photo thoughts--- Photographed last evening. Every once in awhile you get lucky as a photographer. We all long for killer skies at sunset and much of the time they look like they are going to pop but fade out at the last minute. I got lucky tonight big time! You all should have heard me literally screaming "You go! GO! GO! GO!" at the top of my lungs at the clouds lol Thank goodness nobody was around or they might have thought I was nuts. Hey what can I say, I get excited when I am behind the camera, ok? lol This was a new sunflower fields I had never photographed before. Utterly beautiful. Ruined a set of shoes though due to the unbelievable amount of stickers. 2 inches thick worth covering my soles. It was worth it though and I came away VERY happy and excited!

Do I have a story for you all! - Photographed last night at the Sunflower fields on the Colorado eastern plains. To say it was an amazing evening would be putting it rather lightly. Not only was it just sheer fun but we wound up rescuing a little Border Collie mix pooch who have since nick named "Sunny". Emaciated and starving, he was just laying in the middle of the field after having snuck up right behind +Cheryl Oney  and laying at her feet. She turned around and there he was! Sweet little guy to say the least, out in the middle of no where all alone and very hungry. Things happen for a reason and it is kind of ironic that he would just dump into our laps after I just lost my beloved pooch almost a month ago exactly to the date. He is currently at Cheryl's and once again loving life. He was about the nicest little doggie I have ever met.  I think it is quite safe to say that this will be one sunset I will always remember!

Photo thoughts--- So are you all getting sick of seeing sunflower shots yet? I hope not because I have a TON! lol This image was photographed a few nights ago at the Sunflower fields outside of Hudson, Colorado. The light was rather subtle and seeing as how it was completely still (rare to say the least) I decided to do a long exposure of around 13 seconds to really bring the color, light, mood and ambiance out. I opted for an ND 8 along with my CPL and Grad ND to get it. It was an a gorgeous evening....

Photo thoughts--- Ok Colorado shooters!!! Well this was photographed today on the eastern plains of Colorado. After getting wind of this location, I decided to drive and check it out, just to scope it and see what it looks like. What I found was no less than 7 Sunflower fields in the middle of no where. Absolutely massive fields that went on and on. Needless to say I am VERY anxious to get back here in good light and photograph them! It is rather odd though as these are about almost a full month of schedule, Sunflower season is always in August and this is the earliest I have ever seen huge fields in full bloom.

Fresh out of processing I present this long exposure which I captured very early yesterday morning at sunrise. Brainard Lake here in Colorado is one of my favorite spots to photograph, it always gives me images which I personally like. The wind was howling at times and I had to really anchor down my tripod pretty hard. The exposure here is about 6 seconds and I like that the water still shows some texture from the wind. What a gorgeous refreshing morning!

Photographed at Brainard Lake, Colorado a couple days ago at sunrise. I had to get that alpenglow as it is was hitting the Indian Peaks. The wind was just rushing at times very hard and I had to anchor my tripod down heavily with my camera bag which seemed to work for this 5 second exposure. Ideally I would have loved to have had the wildflowers stay still but Mother Nature was thinking very differently than I was lol All I can say is that it was utterly beautiful and well worth rolling out of bed at 3am for!

Photo thoughts--- This past Wednesday myself and fellow shooting buddy +John Sperry decided to head up to Rocky Mountain National Park and do a little shooting. Rare is the fact that we went in the afternoon, something we generally don't do as we are morning light shooters and this time the conditions really played well in our favor. Being at 2 1/2 miles high on top of the Alpine and having thunderstorms right above your head is an exciting experience & probably quite dangerous as well. This image was photographed along the top of Old Fall River road. I really liked the distant rains that were approaching and how it added some drama into the scene, not to mention how lush the foreground foliage was. It is such a different world up here but dang is it beautiful!

Photo thoughts--- The Indian Peaks reach upward to the sky as the thunderstorms build above Brainard Lake in Colorado. It isn't very often that I photograph in what I call "out of bounds light", those times of the day when the light is at it's least dramatic. However there are exceptions to that rule (though rare for me) and this is one of them. There was something about the scene which got me. I have shot this very locations tons of times and each time it gives me something different and new and this time it presented me with a scene that reminded me almost of something off an old postcard from the 30s. The way the color was rather muted and how the light, though diffused, played into the scene. I liked it, a lot. If you look closely on the shoreline to the left you will see the 2 kids sitting as they skip stones into the lake.

I shot this on my new lens, a Minolta 70-210 (known as the Beercan) and so far I have really been having a love affair with it. Sharp as a tack!

Photo thoughts--- Photographed at daybreak along Mount Evans here in Colorado, I have always loved this little area. Those trees are ancient and it is amazing to think that they have been around for 1700+ years...imagine that..... Getting this photo was not what I would call the easiest thing with the wind just absolutely howling at 60+ mph at times as it always seems to do at sunrise in the Rockies. I had to basically brace my camera on my Puffin Pad as using my tripod was pretty much out of the question. Sometimes you have to make due and though I wanted a f16 at lowest possible iso, it wasn't going to happen with the wind. So I had to purposely underexpose and up the iso and use a wider fstop, which I hate doing ...absolute HATE. I whipped out my handy hyperfocal distance calculator on my Android and punched it in using f7.1....the end result is what you see here. I was rather shocked it has the DOF which it does, wasn't expecting that. Regardless though, it was one heck of a gorgeous morning!

Photo thoughts--- Standing here watching the eclipse sunset over the front range of the Colorado Rockies last night was an amazing experience. The drama created from the verga (rain which evaporates before hitting the ground) only added to the atmosphere and made for an incredible display of light with casting sunbeams of golden color covering the valley. I photographed this using my Sony a550's HDR in camera HDR ability backed up by a CPL, ND8 and Grad ND which made for a long exposure of about 1 second and in doing so really intensified the light and color of the scene. I am just grateful to have been able to witness and photograph an amazing event and evening.

Photo thoughts--- So I recently acquired the legendary Minolta 70-210 F4 lens. Known among Minolta/Sony shooters as "The Beercan". I have been testing it out recently and I have to say I am deeply impressed. It is an old lens, first released in 1985 as I recall but it's sharpness is pretty much legendary. Always wanted one but man, they go like hot cakes on ebay. So I have been putting it to good use lately and this shot here was shot using it. When I captured this, I actually handheld it with nothing more than a polarizer. My back was killing me and I wasn't in any shape to stand with my tripod. So I had to make due. There was some nice haze in the scene from which I am guessing is probably wildfire smoke that blew in. It also gave the sky a nice tint. I'm debating about heading back up to this location tomorrow once againto photograph the eclipse. I simply love it here!
I hope you all like it

This was photographed along HWY 93 between Golden & Boulder, Colorado on a gorgeous April evening a few weeks ago. #plusphotoextract #photoextractplus #Colorado #landscape #landscapephotography #nature #naturephotography #Golden #Boulder #sunset #sunsetphotographyPhoto: "Sunset Over The Gravel Ponds"
Photo thoughts--- A couple days ago I decided to venture down to Chatfield State Park here in Colorado. I have been shooting a great deal more locally lately, no thanks to the cost of gas. I guess though I am thankful that here in Colorado we have so many great state parks that offer a tremendous amount of wildlife, habitat and excellent subject material for landscape photography. I was debating during golden hour if this sunset would pop or not as there was a lot of cloud cover behind the foothills due to a spring snow storm in the mountains. For quite awhile I pretty much decided that it wouldn't and would just fade away. I decided though to not trust my instincts and head over to the old gravel ponds and set up. I figured if I didn't get a sunset I would at least just kick back and relax and spend some time with my pooch. So tripod out, filters attached, remote in hand and waited...and waited...and waited...and then...the magic started to happen.

One of the things I absolutely love about long exposure photography is it's ability to really accentuate the light. To intensify the color and the drama within each exposure especially at twilight at dawn and dusk. using stacked ND8's and a CPL which lead to an exposure of about 10 seconds at f14, I was pretty happy with how this one came out.

More of the story?- When you think you have nothing local to shoot, check out some of your local parks and see what you can find. You may be very pleasantly surprised by what it is you find.

I love this time of the year, in a way. Granted it isn't Fall by any means but things are now starting to green up finally some and the sun rises late enough to where I am not having to wake up at 3am to get to locations. That will last for a few more weeks yet. I am starting to see birds return that migrated elsewhere for the winter too like Meadowlarks. Being out shooting this time of the year gets me rather excited as life starts to get breathed back in to the brown landscape that has been the color palette all winter long. Watching the colors slowly come alive is beautiful.

Captured yesterday morning at Chatfield State Park, Colorado. I have always loved the "freshness" of the landscape after a snowfall here in Colorado...the air is so pure and the color so pastel like, laden in blues, purples & pinks. Golden hour really takes on a whole other meaning under these conditions. The trees were covered in Hoar frost giving off incredible displays of the ice crystals reflecting in the morning light. #PlusPhotoExtract #Colorado #LandscapePhoto: Time to run for your camera!--Today's sunrise

So, I woke up this morning, brewed some coffee and happened to glance in the direction of my bedroom window which had the levelours pulled. I see this crazy red and pink glow peeking through and I walked over, pulled back the levelours and about screamed "Holy ^*!!!" The sky was absolutely on fire! It looked like someone took a whole bucket of primary colors and threw it at the sky. I immediately ran for my camera, grabbing it as fast as I possibly could, knowing that I was in no way set up, just a cheap circular polarizer on it that I use for protection and if I got the tripod I was going to miss it. Screw it I thought, I will go high iso with the anti-shake on and get it (I hate doing this really, but I figured it is better to get the shot than not at all) I walked out the door and was completely floored at what I was looking at. Everything was completely red, orange and pink, and by that I mean everything!

Moral of the story? Have your camera close to you at all times!

I thought that I would share this shot with you all before I hit the sack ...taken the last day of our Fall photo meetup in Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado with +Leasha Hooker +Stefan Norton +Becky Herrington

I have wanted a shot like this for a few years now, but honestly whenever fall arrives, I get so immersed in shooting that I have always forgotten about it only to kick myself in the butt afterwards.

Yesterday we had some time to study Fern Valley in RMNP for awhile, and it dawned on me, that it would be a perfect chance to try this technique, something which I call "tilt and drop" pretty much.

Setting up the shot, I looked for a good stand that had excellent vertical lines and once I found that, I set my camera on the tripod, focused, raised the center column, and took the shot...dropping the center column and tilting the camera in a forward and downwards motion. The result is what you see here.

Yep, effect all done in camera...I think I am liking this effect......Photo: "A New Start"
Fine art prints available of this photograph on my Redbubble site http://www.redbubble.com/people/kkart/works/8922768-a-new-start

Photo thoughts--- There is something to be said about clarity when it comes to photography and photographing a scene. It is hard to describe but when couple with good contrast, it has the ability to really bring a shot forward to the viewer. When I photographed this scene I was really hoping it would come out. I tinkered a lot with the exposure and photographed several different frames in order to get one which I really was happy with. I was happy with all of them but I wanted one which absolutely just nailed it. Coupled with the light fleeting and changing each and every second, each one of the shots I took has a different look & feel about it. I have actually debated about maybe doing a triptych of a few exposures showing this same scene over a couple minutes difference, we'll see. Anyways, that reflection got me bad. Really bad. I was over the moon about it along with that rock in the foreground which contained water in it. There was just something about it. Add in the sound of the Elk bugling across the shore and you have a scene which I will never forget. Welcome to where blue hour meets golden hour along the shores of Lake Estes in Estes Park, Colorado on a Fall morning I will always look back and smile upon.

Photo thoughts--- There is a place where I go in which I just feel at home. It is hard to describe but if any of you have ever felt it before then you know what I am talking about. It is where your spirit feels at home, where everything just feels right, it is that sense of belonging that no other place has and that sense of longing for it when you aren't there. It is hard to put into words unless you have ever felt it and for me, that place is Estes Park, Colorado. This is the place where my heart, soul and creative mind call home.

Photographed on a cool Autumn morning of our photo meetup last year on the shores of Lake Estes, the sky simply turned to fire. I used 2 ND8s, a CPL and a Grad ND to slow the shutter down to almost 14 seconds and in doing so it intensified the light & color. I love the reflection going on here of the sky and clouds in the water. Know what else? I just processed this image this morning, ya I am quite backlogged you can say lol

Captured at sunrise during our annual Fall photo meetup on the shores of Lake Estes, Estes Park, Colorado. The one thing I like about this shot is the sense of minimalism and almost the sense of abstraction about it. It kind of becomes simplified in the abstract sense when you let your eyes simply study the shapes. I have always loved imagery like that, good stuff! For this shot the exposure is about 15 seconds and I combined my CPL with a Grad ND and ND8 to really slow down the shutter a great deal to smooth it out some.

The thunderstorms were starting to roll in creating some wonderful light play and drama. I decided to go ahead and shoot this in a pano 16:9 using my cameras HDR ability to really get that texture in the sky. I only hope I am graced with this sort of weather again this year!

Captured last weekend just before dawn. For once, no real wind/breeze before dawn which is commonplace in the mountains. It kept the Aspen trees relatively still except the minor breeze here and there coming off the river.

About the image--- Tranquility. It is one of the things I seem to chase after besides light a great deal when photographing. Smaller, more intimate scenes that I imagine many would otherwise look over. This spot has long been a favorite location of mine, there is just something about it. I have never really gotten a Fall photo though worth much though until this year. See, here in Colorado, just before sunrise (when I am often shooting) we have this thing we call "the solar mountain breeze (among other things depending on your level of frustration at the time lol) in which the breeze picks up. It usually starts 30 minutes before sunrise and can make shots like this next to impossible. I lucked out with it on the morning when I photographed this. Big time. It was completely still for once, with the gentle breeze only being caused from the water rushing by.

Technical stuff--- Sony a550, Minolta 18-200mm lens, stacked Fotodiox CPL and ND8, about 3.5 seconds at f14, tripod and wireless shutter release. Also anchored my backpack on the center column hook for more stability. Other than that?

Video of location I shot while photographing this--- I shot a quick little cell phone vid of us shooting this scene http://youtu.be/Fh1bJhM07XI if you would care to check it out, a little shaky as the light was low

Autumn here is just so beautiful, the color of the Aspen with their golds, yellows, oranges and reds light places on fire. Captured just before dawn it is hard to put in to words just how beautiful this place is. I tried my best to capture it but a still photo doesn't do it justice....the experience with the sound of the river and falls....the smell of the trees...the quaking that they make when the breeze rustles them...I guess that is one thing about being a photographer which I truly love, the experience of it all and just being there witnessing it.

Photo thoughts--- Autumn in Colorado. Each and every year I look forward to it and each and every year 1000s of photographers flock to my state to photograph it in all it's splendor. This was photographed along Guanella Pass at sunrise and it was something....the smell of the Aspens, wildflowers & sound and scent of mountain air and fast moving waters. It made for one heck of a beautiful zen like moment!

Captured just a few days ago along Guanella Pass here in Colorado (a very special place in it's own right) this is a spot that I try to return to each and every Autumn because it is so beautiful. For once and the only time I have ever had this happen in my years of shooting here in Autumn, there was no 'blue hour breeze' (something that happens here all the time in the Colorado Rockies before sunrise) which meant the leaves were still.

I keep looking at this shot and I can still smell the river, the foliage and hear the sound of the roaring water, playing like music through my head.

I hope you all enjoy it

Guanella Pass, Colorado is one of my favorite areas during Autumn and I have been visiting for a few years now during that time of the year. I came pretty close last year with getting the shot that I wanted with this scene, but still, pre-dawn wind was an issue as it almost always is right before sunrise in Colorado, especially in the mountains. This year though? I completely lucked out and had just about none at all. I was pretty excited knowing that I could finally get the shot I have been chasing for so long. This is one of them. I hope you all enjoy it—-John

Light. We all chase it, we all all look forward to it. We wake up at crazy hours to drive a great distance to be in a spot to witness and photograph it. This Aspen had it, big time. Like a burning bush in the golden sunlight of an Autumn morning, this tree just screamed "photograph me now!" and I did. I was a dang Moth to a flame with this one. Captured in Rocky Mountain National park, Colorado...loved the textures and how the light was dancing on that ground...wish more scenes looked like this.

Photo thoughts- Well I took the plunge and finally got Nik Silver Efex 2.0. My first thoughts are is that it is kind of slow and it is pretty nice with what it can do, though I am not entirely sure I can't do the same thing inside Lightroom, I'll have to wait and see. I decided though to play around with it and see what I could do and this is the first shot I have ever processed using it. Channeling some Ansel here :)

My workflow for HDR is often pretty whacked compared to most I think. I don't do HDR in the traditional sense of the word at all and I usually shoot in my camera (as my camera has that capability) and then I edit it in Lightroom. I then bring the image in to Photoshop and use layer masks for tonal contrast tweaking with adjustment layers. This allows me to selectively do exact areas to bring out the highlights and shadows. Often times inside PS I am using 3 or more images blending them.

Captured at Brain Lake State Recreation Area here in Colorado on a very cool and quiet early Fall morning.

The Roosevelt National Forest comes alive with the beauty of Fall color. It was like an entire blanket of Skittles was poured over everything. I had never seen the forest floor ever look like this before, so beautiful and so vivid. What got me was that in areas there were still wildflowers all over the place, wildflowers that should have been gone a couple months ago. I think I will have to post those shots at some point. I really wanted to bring the viewer in to the scene and try to put them there within it. I hope I succeeded.

Photo thoughts--- It isn't often that I shoot in this kind of light; late afternoon, early evening. Maybe it is time I start. I know up here along the alpine tundra in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park it sure is beautiful. I sat here and this massive and sweeping landscape scenic before me with these clouds which were just rushing over the peaks. They were moving at a pretty good clip and really added so much to the scene overall. It was simply just stunning....Have you ever been somewhere where you just feel like you belong? Not to much longer now until Brainard Lake opens back up and I am really looking forward to getting back up to one of my favorite locations to do some shooting. Such a gorgeous area and on the morning when I photographed this, the Rockies were just bathed in alpenglow of sunrise.
---John

#plusphotoextract #landscape #landscapearttuesday #nature #coloradoPhoto: I know a lot of photographers tend to get depressed, mad, upset if they wake up at 3am to get on location to shoot first light only to have no clouds at all. Not I and I think this shot demonstrates why exactly. We literally raced to the top of Lake Brainard here in Colorado to get there in time as I saw the sunlight slowly starting to make it's presence known and I bolted the minute the car was parked, scrambling for my gear, bolting on my filters, waiting for the light to just absolutely pop, and pop it did. The reds were so incredibly saturated that I actually had to dumb them down inside Lightroom some. I loved how sky the blue was this past Saturday morning and how the reflection of the peaks and the color it turned the water just went crazy. I froze my butt off (won't be shooting in the AM again this year without gloves) but wow was it worth it!Photo: Alpenglow hits the peaks of the Colorado Rocky mountains above Lake BrainardPhoto: Had a GREAT time shooting today with +Kat Dennis +Shiloh Pfeiffer +John Sperry at Lake Brainard here in Colorado. Waking up at 3am to get there to get amazing light really paid off big time! Fall is certainly in the air and winter is on the way to the Rockies, as it was below freezing when we were shooting and several times I ran to the car to warm my hands up which were hurting due to the cold. From her eon out, gloves will be a must for morning shoots.Photo: First off, let me just say that you don't know how much dust you have on your sensor until you have a pink sky! You thought blue was bad?! lol Not even close! lol

Captured with +Kat Dennis +Shiloh Pfeiffer at Lake Brainard State Recreation Area here on Colorado just as the alpenglow was starting. It is this time of the day I love to shoot in...even in spite of facing downright frigid temps at times. The world seems so at peace....Photo: "Skies Of Heaven"

My entry into today's #skysunday & #sunsetsunday theme.

This was one of the absolute best sunsets I have ever seen or photographed. Captured at Brainard Lake, Colorado thunderstorms were building above us which shortly would go severe over the plains and the Denver metro area. This storm gave us some great lightning shots and was much longer lived than I thought it would be. I was completely in jaw on the ground mode when I shot this, absolutely astounded by the color and the intensity of everything. It was like being in the middle of a painting.

This is my entry into #SkySunday Captured this past Autumn along the shores of Brainard Lake, Colorado. This spot has fast become one of my favorite little photography haunts. It always seems to provide great photos and is just stunning. It is also quite the hangout for Moose.

#Colorado #sunset #Landscape #Landscape #PlusPhotoExtractPhoto: "The Living Forest"

About the shot--- Welcome to the Roosevelt National Forest, Colorado.
So here I was shooting this scene lost in the moment. It is kind of funny how I get caught up in everything and the surroundings of things when I am photographing a scene which I really love. The sound of the rushing water, the scent of both the pines and the wildflowers and the whole atmosphere of everything. The humidity was really high, to the point that my lens would almost start to fog up....not something which happens here often in Colorado. What really got me was how lush everything was, so utterly green, it reminded me of something from the pacific northwest.

How I took it & processed it--- I had it in my head while shooting it how I wanted to the end result to look. I decided to use an ND8 along with my CPL and Grad ND to darken the top of the photo some. I wanted to really nail the feeling of standing within the photo when the viewer is looking at it. Inside Lightroom I adjusted the luminosity of the greens to make them pop a tad more and added a little more vignetting in the image. I then brought the image into Photoshop where I did some local contrast adjustments using layer masks in the grass.

I hope you all like it!

I thought that I would share this with you all before I climbed into bed. It is cold and snowy here in Colorado this evening and I was just looking through my images and thought -hey I really should share this shot It makes me think back to this past Autumn, just as the leaves were starting to turn...we ran into this amazing thunderstorm just outside of Nederland, Colorado. The light was simply remarkable, just an incredible contrast of warms and cools all meeting. Next thing I know, a rainbow started happening right in front of us. I guess sometimes it just all comes together doesn't it? Talk about lucky to be in the right spot at the right time....

This was quite a scene...and I shot several of this scene, the only real difference in this shot is that it doesn't have the rainbow going through it like the others. The light was to die for as it often is when shooting thunderstorms. Captured outside of Nederland, Colorado along the Peak To Peak Highway.

Photo thoughts--- This is actually a re-post and a reworked version of the shot which currently is in my landscape gallery here. I went ahead and decided to go back into the photo and lighten the bottom up some and add in some contrast masking to make the light pop some more. You can see the original version here https://picasaweb.google.com/103586615087663445665/LandscapesOfTheColoradoKind#5661288466184504034

Just a couple more months from now, almost to the day, I will be back out here for many nights in a row capturing one of my favorite subject matters; Sunflowers. It doesn't seem like it was 10 months ago when I photographed this scene, time really does fly I guess you can say. As I have said before & will say again, there is something incredibly magical about these fields especially at sunset. The light comes alive in ways I can't express and unlike any other subject matter. If you look closely you will see what I mean with the petals of the large Sunflower and how the light almost works into the texture of it. For this shot I went ahead and shot this in HDR backed by a CPL and a Grad ND to hold back the highlights some. This allowed me to really capture the dynamic range well within the image while retaining the subtle light and shadow play. To date it has also been one of my best selling images. It seems many of my Sunflower shots sell well and I guess it's because people love the flowers as much as I do. Crazy to think I have literally hundreds if not thousands of Sunflower shots I haven't even processed yet. Guess I better get to it huh?
Happy Sunday everybody!

Photo thoughts--- Denver, Colorado. This was a tricky exposure, I honestly didn't think I would be able to pull it off but somehow I managed. I had to double up using my cameras ability to shoot HDR in body combined with a Fotodiox Grad ND4 & CPL. It's been a rough last 12+ hours. Didn't really sleep last night at all, to much on my mind and what not. Sometimes good therapy is to try and get lost in processing photographs, so this morning that is what I have been doing. Just diving in and getting work done, though I am starting to feel like a robot with a major lack of sleep complex about it. Slowly waking up here, listening to Royal Crown Revue on Spotify (if you don't know who they are, I highly suggest checking them out, especially the Gangster Bop album) and getting some coffee in me. It is kind of strange, but I have always found 2 times of the day which I am most creative; when I first wake up and late at night. I usually start my day with jumping in doing some processing while completely groggy. I find I get utterly lost in it and can concentrate the most on it then. It's always been that way for me though...even when I was in college I would get to school very early and sit at the drawing desks at 7am doing work while waiting for my illustration professor to start class at 8. Take this image below for example....

I woke up this morning, feet barely hitting the floor, opened Lightroom up and developed it. Fresh out of the frying pan. I shot this image back in August and in spite of it being a few months old, it's brand new to me. I tell ya, it feels utterly satisfying to see I am finally making a dent in the massive backlog of photos which I have.

I like the way this one came out though and wanted to share it all with you. I just hope you all aren't getting to sick of seeing sunflowers. Don't worry, I haven't even gotten really to my Fall photos yet LOL

When I was a kid I thought that sunbeams behind the clouds were the angels peeking down from heaven upon earth. I think in some that in some ways that is still true.

Captured on the plains of Colorado at sunset this I suppose is my little piece of heaven. Each and every year I look forward to being able to photograph these fields and am excited and looking forward to this coming August once again. Generally I am not huge on shots that have lens flare in them but in this shot I feel it sort of works. Usually I just wind up deleting shots that have it and this is a rare exception to the rule for me.

Not sure what I can really say, I think I will mostly just let the image do the talking. Basically it was shot Brainard Lake outside of Ward, Colorado as a thunderstorm was just passing. Captured at blue hour after sunset it is a long exposure image of right around 4 seconds. Hard shot though as the wind was blowing pretty good and at times was causing some moisture to get up high thus resulting in odd lens flare sort of spots in high contrast areas. Had to take several to get the 1 shot I wanted.

Captured at Left Hand Reservoir outside of Ward, Colorado this forest has always fascinated me. We rain into a passing thunderstorm and decided to wait it and I am glad we did. The light afterwards was spectacular giving us a rainbow in the process. It is such a unique area and one that is beautiful.
I hope you all like it

Photo thoughts--- I think that there is a lot to be said for more subtle landscapes, you know the shots that you almost didn't take because you didn't notice it first. It is scenes like this which I love to photograph and I am always on the lookout for them. When I shot this it caught my eye with the subtle light within the scene. I have been by this place 100s of times but never once ever considered photographing it before until this time.
How I took it--- Grabbed my tripod and composed the scene. I wanted to the new growth in the pond as an anchor and to weight my composition. Using a circular Polarizer and a Grad ND I photographed it and I wasn't all that happy with it. The subtle light was eluding me it seemed so I decided to switch modes in my camera and shoot it in HDR on a +3 setting. Combined with my filters, the HDR exposure came out just as I wanted it to with the subtle light play and detail back into the forest along the mountain.
I hope you all like it!

I was simply just amazed watching mother nature release some of her most devastating power and fury in the form of a wildfire that is now approaching 1500 acres. We shot at 2 different location, the first location we eventually moved from as the winds changed and we began to feel like we standing and shooting in the middle of a smoker. The second location, Lookout Mountain, made for more dramatic photographs and this is where this shot was taken from. The wind at times was absolutely nuts and trying to steady a 400mm lens with exposures up to 30 seconds long was very difficult and challenging. This shot here was about 4 seconds long as I zoomed in to get some of the action going on that my lens could see but the naked eye was unable to. I tell ya, photographing wildfires close by is becoming all to often an occurrence the last couple of years. I hope this isn't really an ongoing thing, though I have to admit I love to be able to photograph them, as long as no one is hurt or no ones house goes up in flames. This image was picked up by ABC News and used on newscasts in Denver on TV and in print.Photo: "Firestorm" This is my entry into #LongExposureThursday I actually debated about posting a waterfall shot, but I figured that had probably already been done a million times over and so I thought that I would add something very different to the mix.

This is the Indian Gulch Wildfire that happened earlier this year and was burning above the city of Golden, Colorado. As destructive as wildfires are, they are also very beautiful things to photograph, though very sad as well. The year before I had a lot of luck photographing a massive wildlife outside of Boulder which resulted in the AP picking up some of my shots. This time around, local news stations and ABC national news picked up 2 of my photos to use. 1 of which is currently in my landscape gallery.

I wanted to catch the smoke and flames rising...it seemed so surreal to sit here, in very strong winds, and photograph this. It is also amazing what you see when you are shooting long exposures with what it reveals. To me, it almost looks like an alien landscape of some sort. The way the smoke is just billowing upwards so soft...while the trees below seem to be bracing for what is inevitable. About 13 seconds on this shot to capture it all....

I hope you all enjoy it!

I captured this last Fall & I am hoping that we get a sunrise as beautiful as this in the coming week. One of the things I really love to do is get in close with a longer lens...200mm, 300mm, 400mm and study the scene closely and look to see things that the naked eye otherwise wouldn't see. I have been rather frustrated so far this Fall to be honest with you all. However one thing is for sure, I can look back at what I have shot from Autumn's past and smile, thinking of where I have been, what I have seen and what I witnessed. For this shot I went ahead and used my a550s ability to shoot HDR in camera combined with a CPL and Grad ND. I hope you all like it. Last Autumn we were treated to a spectacular sunrise in Rocky Mountain National Park, one which I will soon not forget. The light had this glowing quality about it in the sky. Funny thing is, we weren't really expecting this and instead were there to photograph the Elk rut. I look back upon this shot and the others that I took at dawn on this day and just smile, remembering how beautiful it was and how lucky I was to have witnessed it and to photograph it.

The last time we were out here shooting, a week ago, the lady who's husband planted the field to come out to say hi and greet us. We struck up a great convo with her and I asked her if we could come back again and have permission to actually go down farther to shoot (it was on their property which is private) she agreed, and was quite happy about letting us do it. So this time around we pulled up in her driveway and she ran out to greet us. Sometimes folks, it just pays to ask and be polite! I am really grateful to have this chance to shoot this field at the angle which I did, because honestly this very field has become sort of the iconic location for Colorado sunflower shots (so many others have shot this field) but having the ability to do a unique take on it with a different vantage point than everyone else, well...I guess it is refreshing.Photo: "Under Skies Of Gold"

Photo thoughts--- This was shot a couple of summers ago outside of Longmont, Colorado. I think I needed a whole can of DEET to keep the Mosquito's away. Pretty fun time though as we befriended the farmer who planted the Sunflowers and he agreed to let us on his private property to get shots that others couldn't. This field is rather legendary and it can become filled with photographers. We wanted a different POV though that others wouldn't have or be able to get. Sometimes it pays just knock on someone's door. For this shot I decided to test out my newly bought Tobacco Grad ND and CPL and the effect was almost surreal with the sky going the color which you see here. I like the light which was captured in the foreground as well. I just hope thyis field is back again this coming summer.

For this capture I decided to use my cameras ability to shoot HDR natively in body backed by a Graduated Tobacco ND, CPL and a ND8 which lead to it getting an exposure which I dearly loved with the light. It was quite a display the setting sun put on for us as it dipped behind the clouds over the Rockies outside of rural Longmont, Colorado.

Photographed in rural Longmont, Colorado. While photographing this scene a summer thunderstorm decided to come in over the Rockies and create some great photography conditions for us. It just came out of no where rather unexpectedly which seems to happen a lot here in Colorado during spring & summer. This field was pretty amazing and offered just a huge and vast view with no man made objects anywhere. I am rather anxious to get back up here this coming year to see if this field is still around. We shall see :)

Boreas Pass, Colorado is one of those little areas that the locals only seem to know about. It is so quiet up here it is almost scary, including the lack of birds. At times I swear you could hear a pin drop and it is also home to some of the most stunning Autumn foliage around. We were making our way over the pass to get to the top to photograph the sunset when we happened upon this scene and had to stop to photograph it. There is something about the scene of widflowers in the air and the sound of a quiet river that makes me just smile. Yeah, you can certainly say it was beautiful!

#MountainMonday #Colorado #Landscape #nature #PlusPhotoExtractPhoto: "Creek Of The Evening Light"--Boreas Pass, Colorado...There was just something about this whole scene which really caught my eye and how th elight was playing out as golden hour was starting to come to a close. The way it hit the mountain peak just got me. Not to mention the creek flowing below and the sweet scent of the wildflowers. Often times this place is passed up by people and I am not sure why. It seems to be one of those local gems that no one really knows about. I guess that is good, because it usually means no one is up here at all.Photo: Landscapes Of The Colorado KindPhoto: "When The Angels Dance"

It's kind of funny, now and then I like to get artistically creative with my photos, stepping outside the boundaries and just have fun with it all. Often times I like the shots while other times I am far from happy with them. Take this shot as an example. Personally I have always been on the fence with it, I keep going back and forth with it and for every second I like it there is another second which I don't. The funny & ironic thing is that it is also one of my most popular selling prints. In fact it is one the very best selling images I have had all time. People seem to love it. Why? Not entirely sure myself but people seem drawn to it. I have sold a lot of large sized canvases of it and the mere fact that people have this image hanging in their house and home so large both flatters and floors me. I guess it speaks volumes though doesn't it? What we sometimes dislike, people love and the images we seem at times to love the most? People don't.

This is my entry into today's #MountainMonday theme here on G+.
.
If it is one thing Colorado is known for besides it's incredible beauty it is it's crazy weather. This was captured at Echo Lake which lies at the base of The Mount Evans wilderness. Sitting at 10,600 feet high, it is a stunning glacial lake and subalpine landscape filled with fir, limber pine, bristlecone pines.

It was quite warm when I shot this where I was at in the high 60s, above here a snow storm was raging, pounding Mount Evans. So much so that they closed the road to the top and urged people to get off it as soon as possible. What may feel like early summer at times here in Colorado can quickly revert back to December. It is amazing how fast the conditions can change.

If you look closely you will the couple along the shoreline. I decided to leave them in the shot for a sense of scale.

I hope you all like it

#Colorado #Sunset #Photo #landscape #naturePhoto: Morning Everybody! It is early (3am) and I am up getting my gear all ready to run out the door to go shoot. I thought that I would share with you all one of my personal all time favorite photos real quick. I captured this a few years ago at what I to this day, consider probably the best sunflower field that ever existed. Sadly, it no longer exists, but I am thankful to have had the chance to photograph it while I could. The views were unending and unobstructed, all you saw for miles was sunflowers. It has been a good shot to me through the year selling a lot of prints and I have gotten quite a few emails with it being displayed in peoples homes, which always leaves me humbled.Photo: "At Day's End" - As the sun goes down over the front range mountains of Denver, Colorado, the Sunflowers turn, in anticipation of the sun coming back up in the morning. First off- Sorry everybody if I haven't been especially active the last few days. Been going through some stuff with my pooch that is rather serious so I have been spending a great deal of time with him as of late. It's been really tough. I won't lie saying that. Had me really worried last few days and he does seem to be a little bit better now yet far from normal. Keep your fingers crossed I would appreciate it.

*Photo thoughts-*Boy this is an older shot captured a few years ago. Still though it is one of my long time personal favorites. I think it's because when I took this I was just starting to get really very serious with my photography and wanted to make the very most of it. It kind has been a marking point for me with my photography. It is one of those shots that you look back on and say "this was one of my defining turning points where I made the turn to become better with my work" if that makes sense? I don't know, maybe it doesn't...maybe it does. It is sad to think that these fields of Sunflowers are gone now though. They were some of the greatest fields I have ever seen stretching on for miles and miles. An endless sea. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this shot from me.

This scene absolutely had my attention the second I saw it. I literally stopped in my tracks and what was before me; eyes darting from the glow of the lush foliage to the composition itself. Eye candy to say the least...as a photographer it was like being in a candy store, the blues, the green, the reds and browns, that deep sky and that striking composition of this large tree reaching upward like a spire to the second tree up top. For the first time in a long time I was nervous about clicking the shutter, I really wanted to capture this in a way which would work and to really communicate what it was I had before me. I had to try to get that glow of the greens the best I could for that was the anchor point of the image itself. I decided to use my Fotodiox CPL and Grad ND to hold back the sky and the sunlight on the rocks and exposed for the greens. I'll be back here again, soon, as this is a scene I want to revist many times and study.

Please read!- It's been a really tough year for me thus far & by that I mean especially tough. I was just released from the hospital late last night after spending all week at University Hospital sicker than a dog with a very serious skin infection which was insanely serious. My doctor team consisted of 6 members from Infectious Diseases if that says anything. As I type this from home, I am sitting with an IV drip of Vancomycin in me, the medicine which is used to treat MRSA though it wasn't MRSA which I had but rather Cellulitis backed up by Lymphoma-something.  It has been more than challenging this year for my health and I have been fighting this big time for awhile now. In a way it kind of stinks because it has really kept me from getting to the mountains to shoot or do any sort of traveling at all to speak of so I have had to stay relatively close to home. It's tough when you are a photographer and you know that right now, this very instant, is the start of your busy season with wildflowers and such and the realization that you may actually miss it is heartbreaking. On the other hand it has made me appreciate my immediate surroundings a lot more and notice things which I never noticed before that are so close to home, like this which I shot before I went into the hospital the night before during a severe thunderstorm over Denver right at sunset. It's kind of funny really that my go to places now are places which I would never even consider as being as such before. No, this year has been anything but easy healthwise for yours truly & right now I am setting my sights to be a lot better by fall which is exactly 3 months from today.  I have a lot of changes to make and in those changes I have found out who my true friends are and who understand the struggles I am facing and how serious they are. To say I am grateful for them is an understatement. It's also why I haven't been around on G+ much at all, I just haven't had the strength and I mean that in the most literal terms possible. So for me, this photo is a rather personal one, for I attribute it to what I am going through right now and have been, for in life's storms, even beauty can be found, sometimes we just need to open our eyes wide enough to see it. :)

It's hard to believe that sunflower season has come and gone in Colorado and that Fall is just now a few weeks away. This year has flown by all too fast and with it, I have had many up and downs. As I sat here photographing this scene a few days ago, I was watching the sunlight reflect against my shirt and just got to thinking about things. Still borrowing my friends Sony a65 while mine is kaput, I was really thankful to just be here doing what I love and enjoying it. Ya know, it really is the simple things in life that are the crowning achievements. heck, 2 months ago they weren't sure I was going to make it (literally) with how sick I was. Everyday is a gift and as a photographer, I see things in a way I never did before. Its hard to explain but standing here in this massive sunflower field? This is my personal slice of heaven!

www.jdebordphoto.comPhoto: On the last morning of August, I stood on the shores of lake Ladora at Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR in Denver, Colorado and witnessed one of the most amazing sunrises I had ever seen. I walked away with a smile on my face and a tear in my eye for I considered this my reward for the fight for my life which I was in just 2 months previous. I am also getting better and I realized this as I set a record for being able to stand with my tripod. I lose a great deal of muscle strength when I got sick and for the first time in awhile, I did something which I wasn't sure I was going to ever be able to do again. Yep, I felt dang happy and excited! I took a really huge deep breath and just said out loud "this is what it is all about!" I face some surgeries ahead yet but ya know, I look forward to it. The path to recovery can be beautiful, if you let it be. Just as this amazing sunrise was....

Haven't been around much lately, just been busy and what little time I have had I have been trying to catch up with processing and such. Been thinking a lot about a lot of things, from a photography standpoint but also from the point of view as a photographer. I think I have a lot of questions about things and why things are the way they are, most of which I don't understand as hard as I try. I've been really itching to write a photoblog about it but I need to gather my thoughts first as it will be pretty deep. Anyways, this was photographed a couple of days ago at Chatfield State Park, a place which I frequent often and a place which is starting to just boom in Fall color as the Cottonwoods start to come in peak color. Ill try to be around more often, the next 2 weeks are very busy as Fall begins to take over the lower elevations. I am really hoping to get some great images, we'll see!

About the photograph--- I am having a serious love affair with Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR in Denver, Colorado. It is just amazing to think that this place is in the metro area and yet nobody but maybe a few wildlife photographers really know about it. It is utterly quiet here, no sound of traffic, no sound of anything except birds and the coyotes singing who were doing just that as they called for the hunt to begin when I photographed this. Standing on the shore of Lake Ladora I was greeted with a sky I won't soon forget. Absolutely incredible color show of deep reds, pinks and purples. I really love this place, it offers so much that you normally don't find in typical Colorado landscapes...I'll be spending much of my winter here photographing the changing landscape.

About the photograph--- Intimate scenes in nature I have always dearly loved and this is quite a special for me. I have tried to photograph this spot for the last 8 years in Rocky Mountain National Park but was never able to. It lies on a narrow dirt road and traffic always hindered me. Honestly, there is just no room to stand here with a tripod and get it. That changed this Fall. Thanks to all the flooding in RMNP/Estes Park and the threat of the impending gov't shutdown, I had the park basically to myself allowing me to work this scene for over an hour with never so much as seeing a single car or other person. Luck of the draw if you will. I photographed several exposure with different compositions thinking I may not get to do this again for a very long time, if ever. I walked away with a smile on my face :)

www.jdebordphoto.comPhoto: I love traveling down dirt country roads here in Colorado, looking for new places and things to photograph and when I turned the corner, this is what was staring me in the face. Aspen trees in their autumn splendor lining the shore of a pond with a reflection that was simply amazing. It looked like a painting and I was floored. I think it's safe to say "take the road less traveled" (literally) when it comes to your photography, otherwise you might miss something that you never expected!

Greetings G+, it's been awhile!
It's been a crazy last few weeks. Having had massive multiple surgeries, I am now recovering at home after having been just released from the hospital a week ago. In for 3 1/2 weeks,, I was going through some major photography withdrawals you can say. Each morning I would watch the sunrise from my 7th floor window, anxious to be able to get back out with my camera again. Granted it will be awhile yet before I can do that but at least I have a lot of images to go through, edit and process. This is one of those.
Photographed on the shore of Lake Ladora at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge before sunrise, I loved the way the colors became exaggerated with the long exposure. Peace and quiet is always a good thing and it is one of the reasons why I enjoy photographing this area so much, it always gives me something to remember.

www.jdebordphoto.comPhoto: I won't lie, I really miss Fall a lot here in Colorado. Besides storm season, it is the most dramatic and makes for the best images. This really is true when the first snowfall hits in late Autumn...it makes the trees and leaves light up like nothing else can. Even when it's overcast or foggy like here, the trees glow in color. It is almost to the point of being surreal but one thing is for sure, it is dang beautiful!

A couple of weeks ago I decided to wake up at 245am and book it down to Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center in Colorado Springs i& photograph the sunrise and do some landscape photography. It's been a long time since I was here (way too long...) and once again I was captivated by what TripAdvisor.com named the best city park in all of America. It amazes me this place isn't a National Monument yet. It is simply a magical place unlike anywhere else in America where the light comes alive and turns the landscape into on giant painting. A park where many of the rock formations look like something out of the Jurassic period that beams with wildlife, canyons & valleys. If you've never been here, add it to your bucket list as it offers endless opportunities for photographers. Here, in this scene, Pikes Peak is bathed in alpenglow framing the "Kissing Camels" to the right (do you see them?) To get the shot I used a Fotodiox Inc.soft grad ND, a ND 8 and CPL on a Minolta 18-200mm lens mounted to my Sony A77.
I hope you all enjoy it!

www.jdebordphoto.comPhoto: When the light calls you better have the camera ready! Watching the sunrise reflect it's color against the clouds of the western sky as the light lit up the Colorado landscape and foothills is amazing. It was one of those moments when I wasn't busy dodging the tripod and my own shadow that I was screaming at the sky with "Yes! Go!" Sometimes a perfect recipe comes together.

Sunsets and sunrises here in Colorado are pretty legendary and even though I had to really anchor down my tripod due to the wind just roaring off the foothills, this sunrise was a barnstormer! The colors looked like someone took a huge artist's paint brush and painted the sky in vibrant colors. I wasn't really all that happy when I snapped the photo of it, the wind was really pushing the tree around but when I got home and took a look at it onside Lightroom, I thought it was a keeper & was really happy with it I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

I decided to head out really yesterday morning to catch the sunrise and to photograph wildlife. I wasn't expecting to find much as there weren't many clouds in the sky when I left the house but once I got to Lake Ladora, it seemed as though they appeared out of no where. I decided to hit up the wetlands area and just wait for the light. There is something I really enjoy greatly about this area at dawn, it reminds me a great deal of spending time on my grandparents farm when I was a child; the ponds, the lack of noise, the sounds of the birds, crickets & the sweet smell of sage. In a sense it defined the genre of "rural country photography" for me. Simply put it was a beautiful morning with a great sunrise!

So, this happened last night. It's officially sunflower season here in Colorado and I couldn't be more excited. Each and every year I look forward to getting out to the massive fields, this one went on for miles, and photographing them at sunset. I had some nice rain clouds to work with too which added a nice sense of drama to the sky. I'll be spending most of my time out here in the coming weeks as there are several other fields that will be blooming then. Gosh, I love my state!

I decided to hit up the sunflowers at sunset again. I picked a different than the previous night which is pretty easy to considering the field is probably 6 miles by 6 miles in size. It was more challenging however as there was a breeze and they kept blowing around a lot so I had to really mess with my exposure to bring up the shutter speed some which I hate to do when photographing sunflowers. The scene though did play out well in the end and I was given a great sunset sky setting over the front rage of the Colorado Rockies. Can't complain about that! The next couple of weeks should be exciting as myself and my fellow photography friends will be working the landscape out here a great deal. Stay tuned!

About The Photograph--- So this happened Tuesday night. I was racing to the sunflower fields when I saw the clouds turning incredible about 90 minutes before sunset. What a night I chose to go...absolutely incredible conditions! This image here was captured in basically completely dark conditions. The light and color you see is a direct result of light pollution and the long exposure itself which was around 45 seconds. I was over the moon when I realized I managed to get the lightning in the image. Lightning over the sunflower fields has been a LONG bucket list item of mine and I can now officially scratch it off!

Ahhh Colorado, you're more beautiful than I could ever possibly find the words for! This sunflower season has been absolutely spectacular with many huge fields close by to one another. It's been an absolute treasure trove for photography & along with some great shooting, I have met many new photography friends and ran in to several old ones along the way. It's been a great time and I've come away with a lot of images I am really happy with. Now if I can just remember the mosquito repellent! You can easily get eaten alive out here to put it lightly. More to come, stay tuned folks! If you are looking to buy prints, these do make excellent large prints on luster or glossy paper. Canvases look great as well!

Snow clouds begin to clear along Kebler Pass outside of Crested Butte, Colorado and as they do, East Beckwith Mountain of the West Elks begins to emerge at sunrise showing its fresh new coat of snow. This scene didn't last long at all, really no more than a few seconds before the peak was engulfed once again with clouds. The sky was simply amazing, reflecting the sunrise behind me. Mostly everything is rather cloudy with pockets of fog but for a brief moment things opened up to give a glimpse. Colorado, there's just no other place like it especially during Autumn!

Greetings G+! It's been awhile hasn't it. Several months actually. I have been incredibly busy and since the start of Fall, I have been through a lot. Some quite good, some incredibly bad but I've learned a lot along the way too. I spent my Autumn this year in the West Elk Mountains outside of Crested Butte and it was an amazing experience. I miss it a great deal and I miss life in general at that time. This autumn I will be spending a great deal of time down there again and I'm really looking forward to it. This was photographed along Kebler Pass on a snowy morning when the sun was just starting to rise. It's hard to beat conditions like this.
So how have you all been??

Gothic Mountain is shrouded in clouds after fresh snow outside of Crested Butte, Colorado during autumn. It is just incredibly amazing down here & I am looking forward to spending most of my autumn this year down here again in the West Elk Mountains. Everywhere you looked, there was something to photograph. To say my head was on a swivel is an understatement in amazement by the beauty which surrounded me.
