Photo: Hey G+ers it time for #MossyMonday again!

So When Is A Moss Not A Moss?

When it's a reindeer moss (a lichen) or a club/spike moss of course!

Both moss imposters are seen in this photo!  The mossy white mass is a reindeer moss called Cladonia uncialis while the green mossy bits are a club/spike moss called Selaginella densa.

Photo: After seeing +Andrée Sanborn's and +Jörg Struck's fantastic shots of Cladonia, I remembered that I had seen some weird specimens of Cladonia the other day while out shooting wolf lichens. So I headed back to the spot where the Cladonia were growing and took some shots.

I've only been able to ID one of the possibly 3 or 4 different species I encountered so far!

I believe this is Cladonia cervicornis verticillata. I love the way the smaller stalked cups emanate from large pores in the larger cups! These things are so cool!
