The areca nut is not a true nut but rather a drupe.
Usually for chewing, a few slices of the nut are wrapped in a Betel leaf along with lime and may include clove, cardamom, catechu (kattha), etc. for extra flavouring. Betel leaf has a fresh, peppery taste, but it can be bitter depending on the variety, and this is called "Thamboolam" in Sanskrit, "kavala" in Kannada, "paan" in Assamese, "Paan" in Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, and Marathi. Bajjai in Tulu
Areca nuts are chewed with betel leaf for their effects as a mild stimulant, causing a mild hot sensation in the body and slightly heightened alertness, although the effects vary from person to person. The effect of chewing betel and the nut is relatively mild and could be compared to drinking a cup of coffee.Photo: Areca Nut Close Up

The bipinnate leaves are triangular in shape, bright to deep green, 3.5 m long, and held on 60 cm long petioles. The obdeltoid pinnae are 30 cm long with a pointed edge and a jagged edge. The 3 m long inflorescences emerge at each leaf node, from top to bottom, producing pendent clusters of white, unisexual flowers.
The fruit matures to a round, 1 cm drupe, red in color with one seed. Like all Caryotas, the fruit contains oxalic acid, a skin and membrane irritant. Needs well-drained soil.
Propagation- By seed, which can take a few months to germinate. Uses- Sap is used to make syrup and an alcoholic beverage.Photo: Closeup

Indiappa is eaten in Sri Lanka, also in India, Singapore, Malaysia & most of Asian countries eat string hoppers but with different names.
In South India PITTU MAYAM is INDIAPPA in Sri Lanka.
Mainly string hoppers are eaten at breakfast or dinner and it´s a very famous dish in every part of the country, no matter you are rich or poor all Sri Lankans love to eat Indiappa.
In the first time it will be little bit difficult, but try it again you will do it well.

Always bustling eatery that offers Kandy’s best samosas, authentically spiced curries and heaving plates of frisbee-sized, but gossamer-light, naan. It’s a largely male domain, but women travellers will be treated with respect and offered a seat in the family section out the back. Don’t miss the frantic theatre of the kotthu rotti (doughy pancake chopped and fried with meat and vegetables) guy out the front.Photo: Wood Fired Kitchen Bawa's Place Matale Sri LankaPhoto: The Colonial Has A Secret Recipe in Kandy Sri Lanka AlsoPhoto: A plate at the Ashram in JaffnaPhoto: Paan is the betel leaf combined with areca nut and/or cured tobacco rolled in mint and other exotic condiments and popped in ones mouth. The first thing that happens is that your saliva glands immediately start to erupt excreeting large amounts of fluid in your mouth and then you spit and its red. Is an addictive stimulant and excessive use can cause serious gum problems as well as turn the sidewalks red.
Is very popular in South Asia

Chennai IndiaPhoto: Late Night In Chennai IndiaPhoto: I went in to a little 8 seater breakfast nook in Pondicherry. I sat down and ordered string hoppers and Wadi (Sri Lankan Names) plus a medu vada. Traditional South India and Sri Lankan food. Since I was the only one there the waiter left the the bucket of spicy sambar for me to refill my plate with. A fellow walked in and order vadas and tossed one into the bucket to soak and sat down across from me since the bucket was at the table I was sitting at. After a few minutes consuming the rest of his breakfast he reached in and too the veda from the bucket.
Personal space and hygiene is sometimes thought of differently in India than in other countries!

Its a shot from the back, the Arabian Sea is behind. In those days you could rent a little hut set back from the sea for $6 a month. Chapora is up in the northern section of Goa where there are steep cliffs and sand beaches. There were maybe a dozen hippie travellers there. The only time you would see everybody was when they come out to watch the beautiful Arabian Sea sunset.
I used to take long walks and one walk was about 2 1/2 hours south one way along the beach towards Panjim and in that time I would come across a few fishing boats one building - restaurant pictured. I went back to Goa in 2008. Big changes but still beautiful I think Goa was discovered by westerners in 67. Varkala Kerala further south is the new hangout for backpackers
