Photo: Bonnie Savage/OxfamAUS  “The girl’s youth group is about self esteem and it’s about them recognising that they’re important, that they are our next leaders,” says social worker Joyce Dimer. “We started off with nothing … the kids were at risk. They felt they had no hope for their futures.” These days, 10-15 local girls drop by each week to have a chat.   "They now have a sense of expectation of a more positive future,” Joyce explains.  More than half of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are under 30, and have every right to expect a positive future (and, ultimately, a healthy old age). Years of conflict in eastern DRC have created one of the world’s largest and most complex humanitarian crises. Since 1998, an estimated 5.4 million people have lost their lives, and more than 1.7 million people remain displaced from their homes. Our emergency work focuses on the provision of clean water and sanitation and the promotion of safe hygiene practices.  Ultimately Oxfam believes that better governance in the Congo could greatly alleviate poverty.
