Photo: This is actor Christopher Gable in the celebrated Doctor Who serial Caves of Androzani (Peter Davidson's last episode of his run). He was a former principal of Royal Ballet until 1967 partly because of arthritis and to pursue a career in acting.
In 1982 he founded the Central School of Ballet and in 1987 he appeared as artist LS Lowry in a ballet choreographed by Gillian Lynn (Cats) for Northern Ballet. The production was the BAFTA award winning A Simple Man, now something of a signature piece for us. Soon after Christopher became our Artistic Director bringing with him a strong and defining narrative style to our productions, including the currently touring A Christmas Carol.
Life can send you in many directions you don't foresee - from principal dancer to founder of a renowned school, from Doctor Who villain (or anti-hero) to Lowry and Artistic Director.
Chistopher sadly passed away in October 1998 after a battle with cancer leaving behind a legacy of strong productions and a stronger Company.

You can see clips from A Simple Man over on BBC's Learning Zone with a short history of the artist Lowry and his work... http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/ballet-a-simple-man/8806.html
