"Congratulations on your gold medal! Oh, and your grandparents have both been dead -- for a year!"
Chinese diver Wu Minxia started heavy training at the age of 6, and was sent off to a full-time training camps at the age of 16.
Her grandparents died a year ago, and her mother had a long battle with breast cancer. Both facts were withheld from her so she wouldn't be distracted from her training.
Her father told a Chinese newspaper: "We accepted a long time ago that she doesn't belong entirely to us. I don't even dare to think about things like enjoying family happiness."
The story has triggered a national discussion in China about the personal costs of Olympic success.
