Photo: Eucalyptus bowl. The striations are the result of working with wood that had a burl in it (what I call a "wart").  The burls often found in tall, isolated gum trees.
Photo: Bottom of bowl. Burls/burrs are very hard to work with on a lathe, since the wood is prone to chipping and splitting in an unpredictable manner.
