Photo: Standing on the Edge

It is important to not forget your roots.  My roots are here - between the mountains and pacific ocean.  This is what I see when I think of home ... this is what my family before me has seen for a thousand years.  Sometimes I miss it terribly.  I look forward to a return trip next year :)

This past summer, +Colby Brown, +Casey McCallister and I spent time here exploring and planning a trip for next summer.  This is one of the views I showed them :)

<edit> A couple people have asked about the technical details making this.  This is a single exposure (17mm, f/14, 6 seconds, ISO 100).
- 3 stop reverse NG grad by +Singh-Ray Filters
- 3 stop ND grad, also by Singh-Ray.  Used to further darken the sky and feather the hard edge of the reverse grad into the volcano and water.
- Processed in Lightroom and noise reduction with +Nik Software DFine 2.

Photo: Iris Meadows

Imagine a remote island in Alaska with several square miles of wide grassy meadows.  Add to that view, millions of deep blue and purple stands of wild irises, coastal brown bear mothers with their cubs, eagles flying overhead, and no humans to be seen for days.  That is where this image was taken this past summer.

It was actually difficult to find an angle to shoot this that did not have any blue iris flowers dirtying up the view :)

Happy Alaska Day!!!  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_Day)  On this day - a long time ago - Alaska was formally purchased by the United States from Russia, with the transfer of land taking place in my home town of Sitka, AK.

In honor of this day, I thought I would post a quick image to show you what Sitka looks like (check out the rest of the album for some more).  It was a nice place to have a childhood ... I got my first motor boat before I even had a car :)

This is a picture I took this summer while exploring some of the area with +Colby Brown and +Casey McCallister.  The absolute silence of this particular morning is something that sticks with me still :)

Photo: Midnight Sun

This is the view from water's edge near my families home in Sitka, AK.  In the month of July, is still gets dark because the city is only at about 57 degrees latitude... but it does not get dark for very long :)

This evening I was out shooting with +Colby Brown and +Casey McCallister.  I love the way the light dances around in the sky at these northern latitudes .. it really reminded me of Iceland :)

Yeah - this is ~11PM :)

I am excited ... +Colby Brown and myself are putting the finishing touches on a planned 7-day workshop in Alaska this coming August (2013).  I am looking forward to showing people my home :)  More details will be coming soon, so keep an eye for them in your stream!

This is an image from a scouting trip last summer with +Casey McCallister  +Kirsten Hrobsky +Colby Brown and myself.  Check out the rest of the album for some more scenes from the area!
