In 2010, the world’s total CO2 emissions was 33.5 billion tonnes, according to the Global Carbon Project. This makes coal fired power plants the largest source of climate change pollution and greenhouse gases.Photo: Photo: 3. China’s no. 1 industrial waste is coal ash, and a major cause of the worsening air quality. In 2009 coal fired power plants generated at least 375 million tons of coal ash - enough to fill up an Olympic sized swimming pool every 2.5 mins. James Hansen, the top NASA scientist, has stated that the ‘single most important action’ needed to tackle the climate crisis is to reduce CO2 emissions from coal. Coal is NOT clean: Carbon, Capture and Storage (CCS) is a false hope. Despite tens of billions in public subsidies, it has never been made to work in a commercial scale.
