Atmosphere Excellent Decor Excellent Service Excellent - Awesome ambiance on the rooftop pool and the Library bar. Sure you can't get in unless you're a member, (or go with one), but if you can manage to gain entry, you won't be disappointed.

Food Excellent Decor Excellent Service Excellent - The old standby that has fed me many a late-night meal during my 6 years living and working in the nabe. The haddock chowder and any of the roasted vegetables are must-orders, along with the gnudi and the deviled eggs. A meal here can get pricey and trying to go during peak hours is practically a suicide mission. If you go late and get in tight with the staff, this is the best way to truly experience the Pig.

Food Excellent Decor Good Service Very good - John's is the quintessential classic New York pizzeria and in my opinion, one of the best. While the dive-y interior may not inspire confidence in first-time visitors, the flavorful pies speak for themselves. In fact once you taste the pizza every seemingly 'negative' detail about this place becomes that much more charming - ie the flat fountain soda (RC Cola fyi), the ancient too-shallow booths and the walls lined with kitschy photos of famous visitors. As it is a tourist attraction, lines have a tendency to form so go very early in the evening or during off-hours.

Food Excellent Decor Good Service Very good - While the decor leaves something to be desired - a long white-walled room with an unfortunate multi-colored mural lining one side - the tiny eatery serves up solid swine and shellfish-happy dishes that won't leave a hole in your wallet. Oh and this goes without saying, but the bacon doughnuts are a must-order.

Quality Excellent Appeal Excellent Service Excellent - The saner of the two TJ's options in downtown NYC if you're attempting to go grocery shopping without battling an all-out shitshow in the process. While this place is still pretty hectic especially on weekends and during peak hours, it's large enough that you don't feel crazy claustrophobic while trying to shop.

Food Excellent Decor Excellent Service Excellent - There are two kinds of New Yorkers - those who know about Barrio and those who don't. Show up early for some of the best Mexican food of your life (at the lowest prices) including the most addictive guacamole you've ever tried, margaritas made with house-infused tequilas and killer bistec and enchiladas verdes. At dinner time, order the shrimp ceviche and the guacamole to start. No rezzies are taken here so unless you walk in at the stroke of 6PM or before, expect to wait almost 2 hours for a seat in this teensy and always-packed LES hot spot. Go with a large posse (8 or more) and you can reserve the large communal table at either 7 or 9 PM.

Atmosphere Very good Decor Very good Service Very good - Excellent artisanal cocktails, small bites and overpriced beers in an dimly-lit, hall-like space in the basement behind Chelsea Market. A neighborhood standby for afterwork drinks and post-midnight nightcaps.

Food Excellent Decor Excellent Service Excellent - Easily my favorite restaurant in NYC - go for the oysters, stay for everything else. There is no set menu here but everyday the options change and are recited to you by the server offering daily variations on chicken under a brick, a pasta dish, a meat course and a salad of some kind. Standbys include the oysters (must order!), the chicken liver mousse (best you've ever had), the Spanish tortilla and the salted caramel chocolate torte. I would eat here every night if I could.

Atmosphere Excellent Decor Excellent Service Excellent - Don't be fooled by the name, you can't actually spend the night here, but the decor inside reminds one of the 19th century Hôtel d'Alsace where Oscar Wilde spent his last days boozing on absinthe. Incredible oysters and raw bar compliment the expertly-made cocktails (which come listed in a leather-bound book) with more varieties than you'll try in your lifetime. Another all-time fave - this may be my favorite bar in the city.

Food Very good Decor Very good Service Very good - The coffee here is excellent and the staff are all friendly and helpful. They make a fantastic banana peanut butter smoothie and a nutella latte (nutella + espresso = genius). It gets very crowded due to the free Wi-Fi so it's best to grab your coffee and go.
