Rockton Falls Meeting of the Rivers, the Monaro

I first came to this lonely falls at the headwaters of the Genoa River in the middle of a thunderstorm. Access here is through a labyrinth of slippery forestry tracks near the locality of Rockton that could not be more foreboding.

Up here, the Genoa River once marked the border between the colonies of New South Wales and Victoria. The river rises in the mountains nearby and flows into the sea at the Victorian coastal resort of Malacoota near a second set of Genoa Falls (which sparkle in the coastal rainforests). There, in the tidal stretches, the river is a couple of hundred meters across. Water was once diverted from this more modest stream at the top of these falls to a waterwheel to cut logs and mill grain for the small Irish community. In the old days, girls from the coast would spend a full day riding up the Yuin Trace from the coast to attend a local dance.

Today these falls are seldom visited save by the locals drawn here by the summer heat and the deep cool pool.

I originally published this as a single shot shot toned for structure - here i have reprocessed this image using a much more radical structural filter to pick out and emphasis the rough granite surfaces of this part of the river. As this process introduces noise, i have softened it a little with a blur. The inevitable effect of these changes is that we lose a little fine detail and introduce artifacts into the image, but it recreated the feeling i had when i first came here.

Celebrate: Thank you. To celebrate what we all achieved on G+, i am publishing the 50 most viewed posts in this collection until shutdown. This is a reprocessed image of Genoa Falls (37th most viewed - viewed 1,906,309 times).

Bones of the Earth, Myanba Gorge
Celebration: countdown 37

An old miner once called this crooked waterfall near the top of the gorge the "Fafnir Vatnfall", after the old northern dwarf prince who through greed turned into a dragon guarding a cursed gold horde ( a fickle gold field was once found near here).

Seeing things (pareidolia) is a common condition when walking through the Australian bush. It is how we stay alive. Apart from strange, deadly encounters, the extremes of heat, drought and flood combine to give rise to all manner of yarns, and sometimes the stories stick to the locality. Still, i am not a great fan of transplanting names from the Northern Hemisphere into this South Land, but perhaps we can turn a blind eye here for this part of the river is home to many river dragons, large (5'+) monitor lizards patrol the gorge.

If you look too long you might see other things in the water sculptured granite: a koala, a heart, a kangaroo, a slippery dip or a fleck of gold dust. A preacher once stood here and saw beneath the arches of a great church, his pulpit.

Myanba Gorge near the locality of Cathcart is a massive southern gorge connecting the ocean with the Australia Alps. Along the blue granite bed of an ancient river that perhaps once flowed the other way back towards the Alps, Myamba Creek now cuts a steep path of multiple zig-zags through the Bones of the Earth to the Towamba River and the ocean. Like all who are young, it dallies along the way, sculpting strange shapes as it goes.

Celebrate: Thank you. To celebrate what we all achieved on G+, i am publishing the 50 most viewed posts in this collection until shutdown. This is a reprocessed image of the Fafnir Vatnfall (38th most viewed - viewed 1,888,761 times).

Image: This shot was taken above the fall, looking down onto the zigzag. The white rock has been bleached by the sun, and carries the stain of floods and a gather of leaf litter. Or is it bone, dry blood and gold flecks - and is the eye really shut? I have reprocessed a closer shot of the scene, drawing out the ambiguity latent in the image by toning for depth.

Wallagunda River Falls Second plunge and pool, Morton NP
Celebration: countdown 38

I remember this moment clearly. I scrambled down the slope to my viewpoint, but heavy fog blanketed the scene. I hesitated, starting to turn back, when a puff of wind opened the vista.
Through the highland mist, you can see the strange rock filters at the top of the second plunge - fragile honeycombed rock connecting pool and fall.

This is a single handheld shot through afternoon mist. I originally toned to emphasize structure rather than depth (the rock walls above the pool are difficult to image: the overhang and different lighting conditions/humidity make each shot different). I originally tried not to separate the colors by dehazing the drifting mist, preferring simply to let the eye wander the structures. This time i have dehazed a little, and reduced Magenta saturation and luminance (to compensate for the greens in the image.

A look back over the G+ Years

I haven't reshared the original post with this one, it needed reprocessing, and it's fascinating how differently you see a photo you've taken when you haven't looked at it for a while.

Gibraltar Creek Falls Namadgi, Australian Capital Territory
Celebration: countdown 39

A 50m (150’) fall into a deep gorge. This is the only accessible deep fall in the Namadgi wilderness. After exiting the gorge, an unusual 'horizontal' waterfall (resulting from massive flows) can be experienced here.

Image: A panorama of three fast shots taken in falling light lightly toned for depth (to separate spray threads). While the result appears coherent, there is inevitable distortion in the bottom part of a shot, where the angle of the camera from horizontal is about 30 degrees. To address the optical distortion (ie, that the fall is developing a fan-like shape) , i have vignetted the image to darken the lower sides of the image.

To my surprise, my G+ archive reports that my pictures received many hundred of millions of views (this week it hit 400 million). Lots of G+ artists and photographers would have had a far greater number of views - and your own posts were probably seen far more times than you might imagine. If anyone ever tells you that G+ didn't have any impact, tell them, it was an awesome place to be part of.
