The Tetons

A view of the Tetons in morning light on a clear day. Quite often on clear days I do not take photos between sunrise and sunset as the light is often boring. But when one is in Grand Teton National Park........You cannot help but want to make images. The peaks of the Teton Range are big, rocky and majestic.

This week, i traveled out west to an intermittent fall in Koorawatha Nature Park.

Koorawatha Falls Dreaming Bang Bang Creek

I detoured out west to check the falls along this outback creek.
On the hike I was adopted by a couple of young kids from a local farm. My youngest guide (5) warned me that, as it had been raining, we should be careful of the possibility of flash floods in these inland hills.
When we arrived, the falls were still asleep, so the kids insisted on showing me the old bushranger cave, the sinkholes and the overflow falls nearby. As we came to each new place, the kids argued about the best place for me to stand to take photos, and they gave critical feedback.
As we were exploring, they told me all the places they were going to visit and all the things they would do, when they grew up. I told them, that they lived in a wonderful place, and they smiled.
Then suddenly, the falls started to run. I followed the advice of my young guides and we scrambled back out of the canyon.
Sometimes, it is not the destination :)

South Australian Sunset

The Adelaide metropolitan coastline happens to sit on the east side of the St Vincent gulf. Which means we are lucky enough to get sunsets over the ocean all year round. I live a couple of minutes from the beach, so when I’m in the mood for some photography, I’m always keeping an eye on the clouds in the sky. Hallett Cove beach is a local for me, and happens to have an interesting coastline with many photogenic rock and cliff formations.

"Alone"

There is nothing quite like being alone in the empty dark landscape under a night filled with stars and the faint glow of the milkyway. The gentle breeze seems to accentuate the loneliness of the dry salt lake as it lies in silent reflection of the dark sea of space above.

Here on Lake Brown / Campion, Western Australia I sent forth my brother with a camera flash out onto the lake whilst I scrambled up a rocky ridge to gain altiude and distance. This way I could capture the expanse of the dry lake and better contrast its emptiness with that of the small, solitary figure that wanders in the middle.

I used an iOptron sky tracking mount to take this 3 x 7 panel mosaic. A Canon EOS6d (modified) was used through a Canon 85mm f/1.2 lens stopped down to f/3.2. All camera and lens settings were kept the same for all panels, and all shots were taken one immediately after the other. The iOptron tracking mount was used for the sky and turned off for the foreground panels. Stitching in PTGui, colour balance and background neutralisation in Pixinsight, noise reduction, saturation and some brightness / contrast adjustment in Photoshop. Details below.

Enjoy,
Will Vrbasso.

The home of the rare and wonderful

Lord Howe Island, Australia

These beautiful twin peaks are the landmarks of the island, and holds so much more than beauty to the human eye, and is recognized with the highest honor as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

These steep cliffs are home to endemic flora and fungi and also a large number of seabirds, of which the providence petrels (Pterodroma solandri) were coming back in droves for their annual winter breeding here. They breed only on one other location in the whole world, but not in the numbers here which are in the tens of thousands. During the day they are out on the sea feeding, but as the sun moves closer to the horizon they come back to the island, and this was the time I treasured on a daily basis.

Every sunset before this image I went to the south end of the seaside trail to Little Island, where the trail makes a steep turn from the beach up the mountain side, seen here as the lowest of the sheer cliffs on the nearest mountain, and continues up to the 875 meter high Mount Gower shrouded in clouds, seen to the right. Here I would lie on my back on the grassy patch and let my eyes wander through layers and layers of petrels flying in every direction courting and calling, but mostly I sat on one of the many smooth rocks in awe of the sounds from the waves crashing to the callings of the petrels and simply how immensely rich life can be on such a small speck of land. It’s is amazing to see the sky filled with so many birds as that is becoming ever rarer because of us.

I planned my last and final time with the petrels the next and last sunset, but instead the sky turned dark and rain ensued.

Looking up in the #TexasNightSky

Another image from last weekend. This time with a less extreme view than my last post with the fisheye. This is still a wide lens but I cannot see behind me with it. This is from the 12mm Samyang lens on my Crop Sensor NEX6 (that is equal to an 18mm on a full frame camera which is a very wide view.)

So as you cannot see the river in front and bluff behind, only the sky and trees. This still turned out to be a nice shot of the sky.
