Fairy Bower Falls, Morton National Park
Celebration: countdown 34

A spray of water, long pendulous roots and ferns cling to this fragile rock-face partway down the Bundanoon canyon.

Image: Cliff faces are the natural enemy of cameras: high contrast environments inevitably mean the lit part of your shot will be overexposed and the shadows will be underexposed. Ordinarily, in poor light with mist rising i would try a HDR composition to even out the contrast or a long exposure to flesh out the shadows (frustrated here because of clouds of mist rising from the nearby large fall and a healthy breeze up the escarpment.

Instead, i took a series of stills from a video i took of this scene. Rewatching the video, i was struck by a significant difference in the white and brightness balance between the dynamic and momentary images. In the dynamic, the static elements (cliff face and vegetation) seemed darker and the shadows deeper while the spray of water was distinct and brighter. This was most noticeable in the top left of the image, where brightness in the undercliff reflections in the still image originally swamped the fall.

I have tried to deal with this using a series of differential filters and by using a technique i have explained previously - placing the original image beneath a 40-60% translucent and desaturated image toned for structure.

Inevitably there is a trade off - a DSLR will be defeated by mist and wind - a video is not going to capture fine detail.

Hopping Joe Cascade - Genoa River Wilderness
Celebration: countdown 35

Balance at the flood and fill your billy with clear cold water.
Fan a flame gently until the leaves spark and explode with fire.
From saddle bag, add a good handful of dried China tea.
Wait till the mixture bubbles and brews, soothing the mind.
Finish with a mighty circular swinging of the billy,
air-cooling the contents for drinking.

Few have ever braved the wilds of north-east Gippsland, a handful have ever lived here.

Some say Hopping Joe was an old Scot adrift from his homeland. Others say he was a prospector left behind by the 1859 alpine gold-rush. He wandered the lonely highlands along the old colonial border between Victoria and New South Wales. It is not known whether he took his name from the creek (the first people custom), or gave his name to this lively tributary of the Genoa. A superb horseman, in later years, he lived in a bush tent along the creek with an old grey mare.

He is remembered imperfectly for providing hospitality once to a royal party travelling by horseback from Rockton to the Cann River. He is said to have prepared tea for a visiting Duke by first boiling creek water in an old billy can, blackened from long usage over fires. He then threw in a good handful of tea leaves, before removing the can from the fire. The creek still retells the story: how with a mighty circular swinging of the billy, Hopping Joe air-cooled the contents for drinking, telling the Duke that this was the 'Real Mackie' and it 'wouldn't curl a hair of any man's head'.

Image: After a fall of snow, Hopping Joe Cascades swirls through blue granite. The creek and the granite echo the other, just as their names resonate. There is nothing more satisfying to stand here and swing your billy in his memory.
There are many ways of processing an image - but to me, an image without its story, however poorly understood, is no better than catching falling light.
In this reprocess, I have toned for structure, looking for resonance between cascade and rock.
My field notes note the presence of foam or snow in places, and staining of the water from flood.

Celebrate: Thank you. To celebrate what we all achieved on G+, i am publishing the 50 most viewed posts in this collection until shutdown. This is a reprocessed image of upper Genoa water tributaries (35th most viewed - viewed 1,909,735 times).
