"The Bornean elephant is a subspecies of Asian Elephants that only exist in a small region of Borneo. Their presence on this southeastern Asian island has been a mystery. Now, in a study published in Scientific Reports*, a research team led by Lounès Chikhi from Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC, Portugal) and CNRS, Université Paul Sabatier (France), and Benoit Goossens, from Cardiff University (Wales), and Sabah Wildlife Department (Malaysia), found that elephants might have arrived on Borneo at a time of the last land bridge between the Sunda Islands in Southeast Asia.
[...]
Until recently, two opposing theories have been under debate to explain the origin of Bornean elephants: they could have been recently introduced by humans, maybe 300 years ago, or they could have diverged from Asian elephants a long time ago. Indeed, there are historic records reporting that, in the 17th century, neighbour Sultans offered elephants as gifts to the Bornean Sultan. Current elephants would thus be non-native elephants that turned feral.
[...]
"Our results suggest that the most likely scenario to have occurred is a natural colonization of Borneo around 11,400 to 18,300 years ago. This period corresponds to a time when the sea levels were very low and elephants could migrate between the Sunda Islands, a Southeastern Asia archipelago to which Borneo belongs. We cannot exclude more complex scenarios, but a historical human introduction seems very improbable, and so does a very ancient arrival", adds Reeta Sharma, researcher at the IGC and first co-author of the paper. The Magnificent 'Winter Circle' Graces The Night Skies - The Brightest Stars in the Sky

Use the Moon to find the bright stars of the Winter Circle!
No matter where you live worldwide, looking Southeast to overhead at nightfall you can observe the Brightest Stars in the sky.

On January 28, 2018, the moon is inside the Winter Circle. You can go outside on this date, and look for the waxing gibbous moon, then notice the stars nearby. The moon is within the Winter Circle stars on this date. All the stars of the Winter Circle are first-magnitude stars, so they should be able to withstand this night’s drenching moonlight.
http://earthsky.org/tonight/identify-the-stars-of-the-winter-circle

The Winter Hexagon or Winter Circle/Oval is an asterism appearing to be in the form of a hexagon with vertices at Rigel, Aldebaran, Capella, Pollux, Procyon, and Sirius. It is mostly upon the Northern Hemisphere's celestial sphere.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_Hexagon

Smaller and more regularly shaped is the Winter Triangle (also known as the Great Southern Triangle, an approximately equilateral triangle that shares two vertices (Sirius and Procyon) with the larger asterism. The third vertex is Betelgeuse, which lies near the center of the hexagon.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_Triangle

These three stars are three of the ten brightest objects, as viewed from Earth, outside the Solar System. Betelgeuse is also particularly easy to locate, being a shoulder of Orion, which assists stargazers in finding the triangle. Once the triangle is located, the larger hexagon may then be found.

Several of the stars in the hexagon may also be found independently of one another by following various lines traced through various stars in Orion.

The stars in the hexagon are parts of six constellations. Counter-clockwise around the hexagon, starting with Rigel, these are Orion, Taurus, Auriga, Gemini, Canis Minor, and Canis Major.

You don't need any special equipments to see the brightest stars but just your eyes!

McCain wrote today to defend freedom of the press.

"Ultimately, freedom of information is critical for a democracy to succeed."

He starts off citing President Reagan as an example of leading and defending democracy. He then veers off a bit into not President Reagan and not defending democracy.

He then concentrates on the importance of freedom of the press to democracy and an informed society.

"Ultimately, freedom of information is critical for a democracy to succeed. We become better, stronger and more effective societies by having an informed and engaged public that pushes policymakers to best represent not only our interests but also our values. Journalists play a major role in the promotion and protection of democracy and our unalienable rights, and they must be able to do their jobs freely. Only truth and transparency can guarantee freedom."

Yosemite Creek, Main Falls, New South Wales

Difficult to locate on the north side of Katoomba (poor signage, variant names and spellings - sometimes called Minne Ha Ha Falls), the pool is still popular with locals even if the tourists don't find it. A long hike in and back, and under present hot conditions, the waterfall may have evaporated.

This is what I call starting the year off with a bang! On January 16, 2018 a bolide was reported over Michigan. This bolide was confirmed by the USGS to have produced a shock wave resulting in a 2.0 earthquake. The brilliant flash and sonic boom it created caused many reports to the authorities. The streak and flash were captured by numerous police and security cameras.
