The secret garden

Dzukou Valley, Nagaland & Manipur, India

A true valley of flowers!

From afar the valley looks like a green carpet, but as you come closer you notice more and more color hues. When you finally reach the valley floor you will see an incredible density of plants and an amazing diversity of species – each blooming at a different time of the year.

The valley was teeming with butterflies and other insects, an indication of a healthy environment, for now.

From the very first shoots of spring to the last frost free days of the autumn there are plants in bloom here, some endemic to this very valley – like the Dzukou lily (Lilium chitrangadae). Some will dominate portions of the landscape with their color, and during my time it was a few patches of yellow and pink.

During my short visit I found many plant species I have only known from garden centers, like spirea, geranium and potentilla, and realized that this valley could be one of their sources.

What I found very interesting was that the slopes are covered in quite tall and dense bamboo, but the valley floor did not support such tall growth, instead it was like a gardener had cared for a flower meadow to thrive and no plant reached higher than me, opposed to the slopes where the bamboo were forest-like in many places.

The Sailing Barge Lady Daphne crossing beneath Tower Bridge, London.

The Lady Daphne was built in 1923 and could carry up to 220 tonnes in cargo as part of a fleet of red-sailed Thames sailing barges built for the English coastal trade. Today there are fewer than 40 of these wooden sailing vessels in Britain.

Magic is back

Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria)

Svartskog, Norway

After the driest summer on record, autumn has brought some hefty downpours. Yet this has not at all replenished the record low ground water levels, nor increased the flow of rivers and streams.

It is so dry that even though the last rainfall was just a few days ago, the mushrooms that have popped out of the ground have become dry and have a stunted growth.

Yet there are a few spots that were absolutely amazing last autumn, that have some really amazing specimens like this one just coming out of the ground. This is in a very dark location under dense spruce, and there is no vegetation – not even mosses growing here, which makes the beautifully colored fly agaric stand out like a manifestation of magic.

As the days are still much warmer than normal, these mushrooms grow incredibly fast. Just before encountering this one I checked on another specimen I had encountered the day before to capture its beautiful appearance before it opened up. But opened up it was! The day before it was just like this one, and the next day it was fully grown!

Autumn is still very young, and if more rainfall come along, the autumn might be a great one for mushrooms, but I think it will be a long time before any can compare to that of the autumn of 2017.
