Random issue. If I open the AC app from another app (ie flipboard) whenever I press the comments button the app crashes. If I reopen after the crash from that app, comments load.

NEW BETA BUILD INCOMING
v.1.7 (let's try this again)

★ Ability to save articles for later viewing (This is an early implementation and might well change at some point, including the ability to save from the index view. Currently, you save from the overflow menu in a story, and see your saved list from the drop-down in the index view. See the pics included in this post.)
★ Improved connection performance and reliability
★ Updated featured article styling
★ New app icon, because apparently that was a thing
★ Other bug fixes

Find previous changes at http://phon.es/achange.

First impressions :
*Love the new app icon!
*The ability to save is pretty cool and seems to work well. Not sure it's a feature that I'd use much, but I'm sure other people will.
*The new featured article design looks great and works well. My only complaint is there's no night-mode for the featured articles. Featured articles only show up in black text with a white background, even if you have night mode selected in the settings. Not a show stopper by any means, but it would be nice to have night mode carry through to the featured articles.

I hope this helps.

I was coming to report the same thing. Crashing on load on my stock Sprint M8.  Clearing data fixed it.

Greetings, everyone! We're pushing out a new beta build this morning — it should be live in a couple hours — for you fine folks to take a look at.

The good news: Squashed some more good bugs. Changelog is below.

The gooder/"seriously what's taking so long" news: We're starting the groundwork on a larger redesign, given the changing state of Android in Lollipop. We've decided to roll the notifications (which, yes, have been in the works forever) into that release, since notifications have changed a good bit in Android 5.0. We'd rather just get it right the first time. And we're still working on the back-end search stuff, which has to be done first before we get anywhere near the app.

So, yeah. The most sought-after features aren't ready yet. But rest assured we're working on them.

In the meantime, here's what's new in this build. Do note that you'll need to manually update since we have to add a new permission for the ComScore analytics.

- Integrated ComScore analytics SDK (one permission change required for this: ACCESS_WIFI_STATE)
- Rebranding for Windows Phone Central App to Windows Central
- updated gallery parsing code to be more robust
- Removed "talk mobile" section from the app
- Fix for visiting the comments of some rich content articles causing a crash
- Fix for crash when uploading some forum attachment images
- Fix for minor issue relating to article not loading/connectivity
- Improvements to performance & memory use

Sing out if you see anything majorly broken. And as always, thanks!

Can we have the ability to block users ? To not see the dribble they are posting

I second this wonderful suggestion. Maybe block all responses to said blocked person(s). No need to see responses out of context.

Beta v1.6 — take 2 — rolling out later tonight

We've removed the ACCESS_WIFI_STATE permission that was part of the Quantcast SDK update for the Google Ad ID requirement[1] — but wasn't actually supposed to be there.[2]

No other changes in this build. Deep linking to the forums and some bugfixes are what's what.

We'll let this soak for a day or so to make sure everything's good, then push to production. Thanks again for all your help and feedback!

So I searched for " android central Moto X won't charge". The 3rd result is various forum threads. When I tap on it opens the mobile site. This is in the latest Chrome stable on my HTC One M8.

I'm on the latest beta version, just was curious about the discrepancy? 8.15 != 41.32. If it helps, the app force closed after hitting the clear cache button in AC settings menu, but was successful in resetting both numbers.

Could well be. Will take a look.

I'm just curious. Does the Android Central App regularly clean up its cache? My poor S2 can't keep up memory wise and I noticed I always need to clear out the 150+mb of cache before I can update about of my apps (yes, I am that pressed for memory). It's not a complaint, just am curious.

I know that there is the convenient button in the settings menu to clear the cache, but I was wondering how hard it might be too have an option to have the app automatically clear the cache for stories older than a week. Again, not a demand. Just a curious suggestion.

A fix for the widget data use is uploading to beta now

OK, folks. We've pushed out a new beta build (1.5.4) this morning, and it should be available in a couple hours. We'd like to get some feedback on this ASAP, particularly regarding data use.

As we mentioned a couple days ago, we'd discovered a bug in Android regarding the way a widget writes to disk. As in it wasn't, and it should have been, and so the widget was redownloading items over and over.

We've fixed it. So please test that out — your "background data" use should go way down.

We've also made some significant changes to memory use and caching in general, which should speed up the app a bit altogether.

For older/lower end devices, we've improved memory handling, which should alleviate crashes those devices were seeing.

We've fixed links that were trying to open YouTube, even if they had no business opening YouTube.

And we've done a few UI tweaks — swiping between stories, fixes for the Galaxy S5, which doesn't like to play by the rules all the time.

And ... That's it for now. Thanks for your help, and thanks for your feedback. The sooner we hear from y'all, the sooner we'll be able to push this out to everyone. And it's an important build.

Thanks!

OK, I'm not on beta but I didn't know where else to post this. My Android Central app has just burnt through all of my mobile data for the month as well as my credit (when data runs out it uses what credit is left). I don't know what happened because I wasn't using the app as I was dropping someone off and driving. I'm on the latest normal version. Anyone know what happened?

+Phil Nickinson Good stuff! I've killed the widget but I have no more mobile data left so I can't test that. It does appear it used a bunch on my home wifi, but it seems to have stopped now (I did force close the app before removing the widget) the widget is gone.

I just commented on this article, and my comment isn't showing. If I didn't know any better, I'd comment again only to have it show multiple times later. I refreshed and exited and re-entered the app.

New beta version incoming!

Hey, folks! We're back in action. Coming up in v1.6, which should be available later this morning:

★ Adds deep linking support for our forums.
★Updates Flurry and Quantcast analytics to conform with Google's new ID policies. (Details: http://phon.es/audq) This requires the addition of the ACCESS_WIFI_STATE permission. So we added it. (Update: See more on this in the comments below.)
★Other various bugfixes.

We know everybody is still asking about Search, and rightfully so. That's not as simple as just adding a search box, but we're absolutely working on it. Remember that any sort of search we implement will need to work across all our sites, and on multiple platforms, so we're exploring our options there. These things just take time, and we thank you for your patience.

If you have any other questions or concerns, sing out here!

+Justin Volzer Absolutely. Now we just have to implement them. :)

Also: Yeah, gonna hold off pushing this build to production until Quantcast fixes that Wifi permission thing. So you all are the cool kids for a little bit. :)

App feature request:
The ability to bookmark stories. With the recent addition of the deals of the day and other stories that will update throughout the day, it would be nice to be able to bookmark them for quick reference later in the day. On a busy day those type of stories can get lost in the shuffle.

Anyone else getting an error when trying to attach a picture in a response to a thread? Using Nexus 5 and trying to submit a pic to the latest photo contest thread.

I noticed while trying to view +Phil Nickinson's photo sphere that it was hard to navigate around the photo sphere without accidentally going to the next or previous article. Maybe disable the swipe features while the finger is over a photo?
