Handoff is certainly critical to preventing errors as attested to in this article but I think there is a key component that should be a given but is not, respect. Why do nurses in many cases disrespect one another by not listening attentively or verbally bullying the other? There has long been handoff tension between ED nurses and the floors. It is a shame to forget we are all professionals. What have you done in your department to improve this communication?
