While collaborating with team members online, I was recently asked to look into purchasing a new computer for one of our members. Each of us is responsible for being able to multitask online as well as run multiple applications at a time. We also need to be able to use social media for communication and store lots of data. Since most of the work that we will be doing will be in our own personal office at home and the device is only to be used for business I took a look at several different desktops to determine which one would be the best fit for my team.
The first device that I considered was the Acer ATC-605-UR2V Desktop PC from Newegg. This desktop comes with an Intel Core i3 which uses dual core technology and has a processor speed of 3.60 GHz. This would allow one core to manage the operating system and another core for helping smooth out additional programs that are being used. It comes with 3MB of L3 cache and 8GB of DDR3 RAM to quickly pass data to the CPU. It also offers a one terabyte hard drive for storing data that operates at 7200RPM which will hold quite a bit of data right off the shelf. This device has a power supply of 300Watts which is a bit low but should be sufficient to run the device. Some additional features of this product are a 16XDVD+R/WR Drive which could be used to burn data to discs for additional storage outside of the computer. The Acer ATC-605-UR2V is capable of using up to 16GB of RAM altogether and allows for several additional PCI cards to be installed. Currently this product comes with an optical mouse and keyboard for the low cost of $499.99.
The next product I chose to explore was the ASUS M32AD-US009O Desktop PC. This Newegg product can be purchased for 549.99 and comes with an i5 processor at 3.2GHz. It uses 64bit Quad Core technology giving it the ability to handle more streams of data at a time and comes with 6MB of L3 cache. It comes with 8GB of DDR3 RAM but does not mention whether or not it can support more. The hard drive on this device is also 1 TB at 7200RPMs, but unlike the previous model I looked at, the case can support an expansion drive if it is needed. It does have a DVD drive, unfortunately it does not seem to be able to burn data to disc. 5 different USB ports are available on this device with 2 of them being 3.0 technology for faster data transfers. This could be useful for transferring data to and from an external hard drive. A keyboard and optical mouse are also included with this model along with 3 PCI expansion slots and two 3.5” internal drive bays in addition to the 5.25” external bay. The motherboard on this device also has an Intel H81 chipset. All in all this seems like a pretty decent product that would meet the needs of my team.
The third product that I reviewed was the HP Business Desktop E1Z77UT Desktop Computer available for $629.99. This device also uses Intel Core i5 Quad Core technology with a speed of 3.4GHz. The motherboard uses a Q85 Express chipset. It only comes with 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM but can use up to 32 allowing room to upgrade if needed. The hard drive can store up to 1 TB and it does have a DVD+R/WR for burning data to disc. This product also appears to use at least two 3.0 USB ports but made no mention of it in the specs on Newegg’s website. I determined this by noticing the blue ports on the front of the machine in the picture.
After examining all 3 options I feel that the ASUS M32AD-US009O Desktop PC for $549.99 would be the best choice for my team. It uses the Intel Core i5 technology which is by far better than the i3 in terms of sheer power. The fact that it uses Quad Core technology is also a huge plus. This device meets all of the needs of my team while still allowing room to upgrade and is offered at a reasonable price. The 3.0 USB ports will be handy for plugging in external devices including hard drives and getting high speed data transfers. Even though the RAM might cap out at 8GB this comes with the device out of the box and should be more than enough to meet our needs.
