Hi all,

I had been planning on getting the tech breakfast going again when Fall began, but have been busy the past couple months with a grant deadline that just passed. Also, attendance at the tech breakfast was getting pretty sparse in the Spring, and I am thinking of doing something a bit different. Specifically, I'd like to find a group project to work on to give us some unity and purpose. What I am proposing is for us to take part in some Kaggle competitions. These are basically data mining and machine learning competitions. https://www.kaggle.com/competitions Organizations release data related to some task objective, and people around the world build/learn models and submit predictions on the task. There are often cash prizes, though the competition is stiff.

For people who don't have data mining or machine learning experience, I'd be happy to offer some crash courses on major topics in the area. And other people in the group might like to as well. I can also give pointers to great free resources online for people who want to get up to speed and take part.

We could still do breakfast and other meetups to discuss our projects, with a bit more focus than before. Let me know if you are interested or what you think about this.

Hi all,

Just a reminder that the tech breakfast is on Summer hiatus now.

Have a great weekend.

Cheers,
Gabe

Hi all,

With Summer beginning, Ken and I decided to take a bit of a tech breakfast hiatus, since people will be travelling and having holidays. Let's reconvene towards the end of August or early September.

Have a great Summer!
Gabe

Hope to see you all this morning! Ken and I will be there.

I can't be there tomorrow, but it sounds like Ken is going to be there, very likely with his violin robot.

Hoping to make it.

My attendance may be a little sporadic over the next month, due to an intensive teaching schedule, but I'll try to make it, and I know others will be there.
