The attention of the public is once again drawn to the social media accounts, especially those on Facebook and Twitter, purportedly operated by his Excellency, Governor (Dr.) David Nweze Umahi.

Governor Umahi does not directly or indirectly run accounts on any social media platform. Members of the public are for the umpteenth time advised to dishonour all requests from the impostors operating social media accounts in the name of the governor.

Ebonyians and other Nigerians will be informed accordingly whenever His Excellency begins to operate accounts on Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels.

Brutalised Physically challenged man: Umahi demands  sacking, trial of   two soldiers

Governor of  Ebonyi, Engr David Umahi, has demanded the dismissal of two soldiers who brutalised a physically-challenged man, Mr Chijioke Oraku, in Onitsha,  Anambra State.

Oraku, a native of Ikwo Local Government Area was dehumanised  by the  two soldiers penultimate week   for wearing army camouflage. The video of the  brutalisation went viral thereby attracting national outrage that made the Army authorities to demote the soldiers and sentence them to 21 days in detention.

Umahi, who received  Oraku during the state’s Executive Council meeting in Abakaliki on Tuesday,   noted that the sanctions meted to the soldiers were mild going by the fact that they did not behave like human beings.”

The governor, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Emma Anya, said,  “We believe that 21 day  imprisonment is  not enough. The soldiers did  not behave like human beings and to be demoted is not enough

“I suggest to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.- Gen.  Buratai, that those soldiers should be sacked from the army and be prosecuted immediately.”

Umahi, who however thanked Burutai for taking  the actions  against the soldiers, directed the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Benard Odoh, to write a letter demanding the dismissal and prosecution of the soldiers.

He was also full of praises for his Anambra State counterpart, Willie Obiano, for his quick intervention in  this matter.

The governor said, "I want to thank the Governor of Anambra State for his quick intervention in  this matter.  I was very happy when he reacted immediately and rehabilitated the young man.  I also  want to commend the Chief of Army Staff for the disciplinary action so far taken  against those two soldiers. I thank the people of Anambra and Ebonyi who followed up on this matter.

“But  we are going to take a picture of  him (Oruku) and send to the COAS to demand  the sacking and prosecution of those soldiers who carried such unprofessional act.

“I believe that the army has to be disciplined in their conduct.   We  must insist that discipline is maintained in our society.

“If enough punishment is not meted on those two soldiers, they would still carry out the same act.”

Umahi however  asked his Senior Special Adviser and Welfare Matters, Rev.Father Abraham Nwali to interact with Oruka, on ways the state government could properly rehabilitate him.

He also ordered the release of N500,000  to  the brutalised man for the continuation of his   treatment and temporary upkeep.

Immediately the largesse was announced, Oruka, who  wore army camouflage , adjusted his  faded fez  cap and  gave a broad smile.

When asked  what area the government could be of help to him, he expressed his desire to be in the Army.

By Philip Nweze

September 5, 2016 will live on our collective memories. It was one of the unforgettable moments that made both headlines and history across the world. It was a defining moment for the state. On that day, the name "Ebonyi" was elevated into national significance and prominence. For a people who were noted for their timidity, vassalage and backwardness by several years of psychological battery and debilitating poverty, it was an extraordinary transformational leap. The event of that day marked an evolution of a new generation of proud, avid and confident Ebonyians with innate attitude of breaking new grounds and churning out wonders.

By the end of September, 2016, Ebonyi state under the watchful eyes of Engr David Nweze Umahi had stood tall among her peers, brandishing for herself a model lassa fever diagnostic and treatment centre valued at N350m. The state clearly defied the lashings and fury of the economic recession and emerged tall among other south eastern states with a multi-million naira project that humbled other state governors, being the youngest in the zone. Obviously, the modern virology laboratory was quickly put in place during the outbreak of the fever to mitigate the danger of the deadly disease. To equip the centre, the state executive council also approved four ambulances and four dialysis machines, both to be stationed in each of the designated hospitals in the three senatorial zones, and hospitals within the state capital to ensure adequate and prompt action against the spread of the virus.

A lot of people both natives and non-natives, including medical workers had perished to the disease in the state over the years, which wouldn't have been so, if they were given prompt diagnoses and treatment. The essence of the virology lab therefore was for prompt analysis of suspected Lassa Fever case, to proffer solution by way of treatment without endangering the lives of other patients and medical health workers. Before now, the nearest virology diagnostic centre was at the Specialist hospital in Irua, Edo state, where the health workers that were infected with Lassa fever in Ebonyi were treated. A drive from Abakaliki to Irua takes at least five hours.

The gargantuan complex upon completion was inaugurated by the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole. Adewole who was in company with his Agriculture counterpart, Chief Audu Other, said he was excited that a state government could embark on such a life-saving centre "without any prompting by the federal government" and immediately announced that the centre would be converted to South-southwest diagnostic and treatment centre.

For actuality, I would simply replay Prof. Adewole's words: "I am actually short of words; I am yet to recover from shock over this giant strides. This actually surpasses my expectations and I must say clearly that we should see this as a partnership..." His candid assessment of the Governor showed a picture of a man with impressive brilliance, versatility and incisive mind.

Until recent, Ebonyi ranks low  among the populace as the twin issues of poverty and ignorance held the people down from achieving their potentials. Not anymore! A clinical analysis of the present situation by the current administration in the state appears to be moving the hand of the clock forward. The twin problem of lassa fever, guinea  worm and malaria have always remained key issues among the health challenges ravaging the people. With this novel strategy,  Engr Umahi has become synonymous with the new face of Ebonyi.

Today, the health indices of Ebonyi state, under the enigmatic engineer-turned politician, has rebounded with renewed vitality, thanks to massive investment in human and critical public infrastructure.

Umahi to LG chiefs: Recover our agric loans or forget Feb. allocation

The Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, has  warned  that any Local Government  Area chairman who fails  to recover the agric loan given to farmers in their  area would forfeit February allocation.
Umahi gave the warning while  swearing in   the Caretaker Chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area,  Mark Onu and the Vice-Chairman,   Patience Aja at the  Government House, Abakaliki on Wednesday.
The governor expressed displeasure over the inability of some council chairmen who  stood as sureties for  farmers  but had failed to make them (farmers) repay the loans.

"Any chairman that signed surety for agric loan and has not recovered it  for us will  not get allocation  this month,” he said in a statement on Thursday by his spokesman, Emma Anya.

He argued that since the council chiefs voluntarily stood as sureties for the farmers, they  “should be the first to knock at the doors of the beneficiaries after they  harvested."

He also spoke on the forthcoming council polls in the state, saying his government  will  fight anyone who wants to trauncate democracy in the state.

The governor added “that only credible candidates who are close to the people would be supported to vie for posts.”

According to him,  all democratic tenets would be observed in the state no matter whose ox is gored.

Umahi added, "I heard that some people zoned the chairmanship candiatate positions of our party (PDP) to particular individuals in their areas and this would not happen under this administration.

"Anybody who does not succeed in this regard and wants to fight us, we are ready to fight back from day one.

"Life is all about war as the person should let us know he is ready to fight and it would not be like the one we fought in the past and God helped us to win."
The governor remarked the chairmanship candidates of the party would be those who would be ready to deviate from the norms of the past.

"Commissioners and LGA chairmen complain that if their predecessors can construct mansions, they also should be allowed to construct mansions.

"Those days are gone but they can still build the mansions by creating the avenues themselves.”

He threatened to sack any LGA caretaker committee chairman who does not honour any summon or invitation by the state House of Assembly.

"I do not toy with the  House of Assembly. If you're a chairman of local government and the House of Assembly calls you to give account of your stewardship if they write me, I will remove you the same day. If you've been called by the House or their committees and you refuse to attend, it means you're looking for trouble."
