In our school district we are Mac and iPad based. We are considering purchasing several classroom sets of Chrombooks for next year before we decide on a platform as we move towards a 1-1 initiative.

What can you do with a Chromebook that you can't do with a Macbook running the Chrome browswer?

Wow! You keep your MacBooks around for 10+ years?? I haven't seen a MacBook run smoothly beyond 5 or 6 years.

When considering Chromebooks, you should also be aware of Google's Chromebook End-of-Life Policy. Some Chromebooks have a longer life than others, determined by Google.

If you're using Google Forms, you need this add-on

Organizing data and reports from your Google Forms submission without touching the original data just got a bit easier! EZ Query is a sheet add-on that makes it simple to use the Query function on your data. In a new sheet, you can create reports that you want - specific columns and filters based on the submission - that automatically updates as new submissions are added!

Create a new sheet that only shows the information you want and is always up-to-date.

If you want to have a repository of documents in one location using a GAFE Drive (unlimited storage) would you
a) use one person's account to store and share the materials,
b) have multiple people curate materials and share their folders or
c) create a user in the GAFE domain that multiple people have the password for that contains all the documents?

I create different accounts such as title@myschool.org or curriculum@myschool.org so that the files cannot be deleted. Then in those accounts folders are shared with appropriate groups

How long does it take for approval for a YouTube EDU channel? I have teachers that applied more than a month ago. They simply want to post their flipped classroom videos without them being blocked by Safety Mode. #YouTube

Need Help!  After 3 long years of pushing for a 1-1 initiative it is happening. Yea!  I was pushing very hard for Chromebooks(maybe too hard) we are going 1-1 with Ipads.  The Help!  Best Ipad Apps that work with GAFE schools.  Apps that work best with Google Docs and Apps to avoid.  Thanks! We are still 1-1 a step in the right direction.

As a different approach a cluster of schools I work with chose to adopt explain everything as their primary application. They are highly effective at achieving student learning lifts. The apps files can be stored in drive and opened with explain everything from there. Choosing the open with options is probably a good start.

Share your keyboarding initiatives!

This is not specifically Google, but I am drawing up our recommendations for keyboarding in our K-12 school district.  I am recommending that keyboarding be taught for 4-6 weeks at the beginning of the year and then used as a support for students who need it the rest of the year. I am also recommending that keyboarding not be graded. I think true typing proficiency comes from inital instruction about typing techniques and then lots of writing. We are adopting Typing Club as our keyboarding program as we are a GAFE district.  I anticipate push back from teachers who believe we should be rigid in our teaching of keyboarding (correct posture, hand position and speed) and we also have some parents who want it pushed heavily.  You can read the draft of my proposal below and I would appreciate any suggestions, district plans or research articles you may have come across that address keyboarding in schools.

The days of most jobs requiring sitting at a desk typing all day are quickly going away.

They've reached $30,000 with three days to go! Keep backing, keep sharing.
If you're looking for some motivation, one of their many exciting pilots this year will be in Ghana with USAID's Malaria Initiative. To create awareness among rural communities, health workers will use the Box to use media content about prevention and early diagnosis in the most remote areas.
Please share and spread the word fast.
LumenEd is raising funds for The Bright Orange Box: Connecting Classrooms on Kickstarter! The Bright Orange Box is a smart projector. It brings digital tools to disconnected classrooms and connects students across the world.

Removing Shared Google Folders Can be Bad!

Removing a shared file is pretty straight forward - I remove it from My Drive but it should remain on the owner's drive. However, if someone share's a folder with your and you delete the file, it will go missing from EVERYONE's drive.

Have you run into this and how do you handle it?

Join our Google user group HOA this Friday to plug your EduOnAir session:
As you may know, I host a monthly Google User Group meeting as a Hangout On Air on the third Friday of each month from 9am to 11am EST. The next meeting is tomorrow, April 17th, and I plan to spend some time in the Hangout talking about the upcoming EduOnAir sessions.
If you are presenting one of the EduOnAir sessions, let me know if you would like to join the Hangout for the Google User Group meeting this Friday to plug your session. It would be a great way to let folks know about you and your session. I would also love to do a little chat about creative PD in general.
Details about the monthly Google User Group meetings can be found here:
http://google.apps.sparcc.org/usergroup
Let me know. Thanks! Eric

When users in our GAFE domain go to change their password, they are directed back to our district website. I can't find any setting in the admin controls where this would be set.

Some huge updates rolling out to GAFE domains in the next "few months."

1. Multi-domain support for Google Classroom
2. Granular document sharing controls for administrators down to the OU level. i.e. let teachers share documents publicly but students can only share in-domain.
