View From the Hilltop Castle
Location: near Pardubice, Czech Republic
Date Taken: 6 Jun 2015
Camera: Nikon D60

Kunětice Mountain Castle was built in the beginning of the 15th century and played an important role during the Hussite Wars. In the early 17th century, during the Thirty Years' War, the castle was besieged several times; at the end of the war Swedish troops burned it to the ground. The castle remained a ruin until the early 20th century, when the Pardubice Museum Society was formed. The group purchased the site and began reconstruction. Today the castle is open to the public as a museum.

Ruins of Děvičky Castle
Location: near Pavlov, Czech Republic
Date Taken: 15 Apr 2015
Camera: Nikon D60

The castle was first mentioned in 1222, at that time it was a royal property. In 1344 Czech King John of Luxembourg gave the castle to the aristocratic Liechtenstein family, who then owned it until 1575. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was conquered by the Swedes who had plundered and burned it. Then it has served as a guarding stronghold, until the end of the 18th century. Děvičky castle was finally abandoned in the early 19th century, but its ruin still remains a dominant landmark of the whole region.
