Question -- I have a client whose brand name years ago included the word "Distributing." However, they don't want to be known as "Distributing" but for some reason whenever you search their brand name, the word "Distributing" still remains attached in search results. How do I contact Google to tell them that the word "Distributing" should no longer come up with their brand name in search results?

This is a totally random and probably even a little weird....

Yesterday, I was listening to this guy's sales pitch for a reporting tool that compares a certain aspect of a business's online presence to the top 5 businesses in that general niche.

Someone asked if there was any way for us to manually change the 5 competitors. He says, "No, and let me tell you why.....Let's say you wanted to be a tennis player. You'd want to play against the 5 best players in the world and that's how you'll be able to compete and become as good as them."

Forget about the tool. That's not what this is about. I was imagining myself playing tennis against the world's best players and just couldn't help myself from thinking.....

"Actually, no! Dude, that's like the worst analogy I've ever heard. Just tell me who the top 5 players are so I can scope them out and take notes, but don't want to immediately challenge them to a dual. If I'm trying to learn how to play tennis, I want to play against 2 people that are athletically challenged, 1 person that's on the same level as me, and 2 that are better than me. That way I get a little confidence, know where I currently stand, and where I need to improve to get to the next level. As I get better, I replace the players and go up against more challenging opponents. If I try to just jump in there and take on the world's 5 best players, I'm going to get annihilated. I'll end up hating tennis and pick up a different hobby; like knitting, or collecting stamps, or something else that's far more interesting than tennis." lol

That strange analogy he used didn't really have anything to do with SEO, but it did make me think of a random philosophical question....

When it comes to online marketing/SEO, do you believe in swinging for the fences or building your way up?

+Laurie Turnbull - I do too. I think it's pretty cool. Does anyone know why some accounts have the age/gender/interests feature and others don't?

Any of us here use share of voice as performance metric to assess effective SEO and PPC strategy (off course, not excluding display, social media and conversion channels)?

We have analytics set up to assess cross channel performance. At the moment share of voice is only used on one search channel to benchmark and compare the weight, percentage against other competitors. I believe it can provide a bigger picture if we include other channels, and should use it to assess cross channel performance leading to facilitate evaluate/optimize the spend on i. e.: display, social media, PPC, affiliate; not just on one channel only. So I'm keen to know your thoughts/usage on share of voice, what's the common challenge (from the client for example) you are facing, and how you resolve that.

Hi guys, it's a bit off-topic but I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions for a site/service that provides feedback on a website? I've used usability hub before but am looking for something where I can get feedback on a complete conversion process as opposed to a single page.

Happy Friday guys!

Quick question...anyone have any experience with or know of any studies that show too much external css and javascript having a direct effect on rankings?

I'm working on a site that that has a lot of little javascript bells and whistles but doesn't look too pretty through a Lynx browser and have a feeling that any crawler wouldn't be too keen on trying to decipher it all.

I would be interested in hearing if anyone has come across evidence of a site that was getting directly penalised in the rankings because the content wasn't easily "readable" by the crawler/bot?

Obviously there are countless other factors involved and it's difficult to pinpoint or prove a "theory" like this but I'm interested to hear at least a few opinions.

Cheers!

Thanks +Tammy Wood +David LeBlanc +Raul Smith. I've yet to see anything conclusive but I'm going to put a bit of effort into cleaning the code up a bit and improving load times anyway to see if that has any affect. It can't do any harm from a user experience perspective anyway.

Thanks Dan, yeah I came across that post when doing a bit of digging around on Friday. It makes sense. To be honest I've had a bad gut feeling about the coding of this website since I started working on it but again I haven't seen anything that has proven it has a direct impact on  rankings.

I might document this one and make it a bit of a case study!

Thanks again for the input guys, always much appreciated

Has anyone else noticed a big spike in traffic/pageviews yesterday? I'm not sure what's up, but I'm seeing traffic 3 to 4 times the normal daily traffic on sites running UA.

I got the newly designed Analytics dashboard yesterday too, so I'm guessing that there's a bug somewhere.

According to pages report, all pages have even numbers for pageviews, which means the script was loading twice for each pageview. Is anyone else seeing this?

Does anyone know if it's good or bad to redirect alias domains to one main website? So is it bad to link example.com and example2.com to mainwebsite.com ?

One more thing I would like to add, please correct me if I am wrong. I believe example.com and example2.com should be relevant to mainwebsite.com. Earlier this technique was used for spammy purpose named as Cloaking thus Google Penalises for such activity, therefore do consider about relevancy as well.

As far as I can see this is new to Neil Patel's site today. What do we think of it. Some of the results seem a little sketchy! http://www.quicksprout.com/

I know! It's been coming but it's still sooo frustrating! I've just experienced a big drop in rankings for a particular KW and this just makes it harder to isolate any potential damage it may cause to my traffic!

Why Google, Why?!

My website comes up well in the search for my local area, with Google Authorship added and 'impressions' are good, but click throughs are not. Any ideas as to what am I doing wrong? Would appreciate any advice please.
