30 Weeks until Minecon 2014! Who is going??

The long-rumoured Android-based console from retailer Amazon has finally been unveiled, with a controller-less version for $99.

The Amazon micro console is called Fire TV and as previously leaked it doesn’t include a game controller as standard, but it will have a specially customised version of Minecraft.

The device is more a set-top box than a console, and primarily aimed at streaming movies, TV, and music. But it will play games as well, and at its heart has a quad core CPU with 2GB of RAM, and a dedicated GPU.

That won’t be enough to play versions of current next gen games though and most downloads are expected to cost $2 or less, much of them no doubt identical to apps on the Google Play store. Sega, Telltale Games, Disney, Ubisoft, EA, and 2K have all pledged support, all of who already have plenty of Android games to sell on the new format.

The basic package is just $99 (£60) for a console that fits into the palm of your hand, but for $139 (£84) you can have a version with a gamepad. Alternatively you can use a remote, smartphone, or tablet as a controller.

As well as Minecraft Amazon also showed off Gameloft’s driving game Asphalt 8 and a new third person shooter called Sev Zero. Amazon acquired Killer Instinct developer Double Helix some months ago and Sev Zero is their first title for the new format.

But rather than games the focus of the announcement was on streamed media content, with the Fire TV aimed more at rivialing Apple TV and Roku than the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Services such as Amazon Instant Video (née LoveFilm), Netflix, YouTube, Vimeo, were all confirmed for the system, along with US-only apps for Hulu,, and NBA.

Snapshot time! We’ve fixed a whole bunch of bugs introduced in last weeks snapshots, introduced a few new commands and tweaked a few things that needed tweaking.

Notable additions for mapmakers:

/tp now supports rotation arguments
Player selectors (@p, @e, etc) now support cubic areas. For example:@e[x=0,y=0,z=0,dx=10,dy=10,dz=10] gets all entities between 0,0,0 and 10,10,10
Added /clone command to copy large areas to other areas
Added a /fill command to fill a large area with a block
To get snapshots, open your launcher and press the “New Profile” button. Call it “snapshots” and check the box saying “Enable experimental development snapshots” and save. To switch to the normal version, you can select it in the dropdown at the bottom left corner of the launcher.

The first snapshot of Minecraft 1.8 has arrived! This update will be split into two primary focuses: Survival gameplay & improvements, and new fancy abilities for adventure maps! We’ve done a whole bunch of optimizing for both the client and server (with more to come!) and lots more work towards the Plugin API in the background. As this is the very first snapshot of 1.8, do remember to backup your worlds before trying it!

Big survival changes:

Big Adventure Map changes:

Adventure Mode no longer lets you place/destroy blocks.
But that can change!
Added Entity Selectors! Use @e in certain commands to target entities. You can limit it with [type=Chicken] or [type=!Skeleton]
Added a /blockdata command!
Added ‘Lock’ (String) NBT tag on most containers.
Added an optional entity parameter to /kill (try: /kill @e[type=!Player]
Added optional arguments to /clear for max item count (use 0 to not actually delete anything) & NBT data

Update: Pre-release 1.7.2 has been released to address some serious crashes, including the inability to start on some Linux computers.

It feels like we’ve been working on this for a year now, with more than half a million lines of code changed over 1,104 commits we’ve been working extremely hard on this update. We’re calling this one “The update that changed the world”, because it really has in two different ways; there’s over twice the amount of ingame biomes, and we’ve overhauled lots of the code preparing for the plugin API.

Here’s a list of cool things that may be coming your way on Friday, if the pre-release goes well!

New world generation!
Double the amount of biomes, with new trees/flowers/blocks.
New “Amplified” world option.
Less ocean, more awesome.
New blocks!
Two new types of wood.
Stained glass! With both blocks and panes.
Packed ice, red sand, podzol.
Lots of new flowers, including double-tall versions of current plants.
Portals can be bigger sizes!
Added more type of fish.
Redone the fishing mechanics. Can now catch junk and treasure too.
Fishing rod enchantments!
Put them in an item frame and hang them on your wall. They’re extra big!
