The lonely plant

A plant,
tiny
as a flash in the ocean
at dawn,
chose for a home
the only empty vase
where there was just earth.
“Where did you come from, plant?
And why does your seed
prefer to live in an empty vase?”
“The wind
took me away from my land
and I travelled
for days and nights
and, finally, exhausted
I chose to collapse
on your balcony.”
“That’s very nice,
but why didn’t you choose
a vase with plants?”
“I would have liked to,
but I soon realized
that I wouldn’t have been welcome.
I am different and I come from far away
and yet my veins are filled with sap, just like theirs,
I’m green, just like them,
and furthermore
I love the sun, the water and the earth.
For this reason I preferred
to be born alone.
I suppose I might be a little bitter
but now I know
that it’s better to grow on your own
and to be alone
than to grow alongside others
and feel alone anyway.”

The child and the moon

“Sweet child,
what are you doing
all alone on the balcony?”
“I’m waiting for the moon
so I can listen to it
sing and tell stories
that only she knows.”
“But it’s still too early
to see it
and you were sleeping.”
“Yes, but I wasn’t sleeping,
I was talking to her.”
“What did she tell you?”
“She told me that she will soon come.
Now she’s with the other children
on the other side of the world
and she also told me
that everyone can see her
but only children can talk to her.”
“Why?”
“Because when you grow old
you stop waiting on the balcony
for the moon to arrive.”

Il bambino e la luna

“Dolce bambino,
che fai
tutto solo sul balcone?”
“Aspetto la luna
per sentirla cantare
e raccontare le fiabe
che solo lei conosce.”
“Ma è ancora presto
per vederla
e tu stavi dormendo.”

Improvvisazione

Marciapiedi d’argilla
tra luci e tombini
di locali fumosi
su per erte montagne
di vicoli affollati
di rugiada
ho il collo intriso
e vapori di saune
stramazzano al suolo
guarda più avanti
gira e all’improvviso
chitarre
spuntano in tramonti
scale sconnesse
di bar semivuoti
quando la gente dorme
e senza meta
qualcuno vaga
improvvisando note
di musica andina
solo per il piacere
di ascoltare versi e parole
voci distratte
spengono il porto.

Improvising

Clay pavements
between lights and manhole covers
and smoky clubs
high up on mountaintops
in crowded alleyways
my neck is soaked
with dew
and sauna steam
plummets to the ground
look further ahead
turn and suddenly
guitars
appear in sunsets
interrupted staircases
in half-empty pubs
while people are asleep
and someone is wandering
aimlessly
trying his hand at playing Andean music
just for the pleasure
of listening to verses and words
heedless voices
switch the harbour off.

Piccolo fiore d’ebano

Piccolo fiore d’ebano
fammi accarezzare
i tuoi petali
e riempire il mio corpo
del tuo profumo.
La foresta perdonerà
il mio amore
se per una notte
ti rubo a lei.
Ti adagerò su un giaciglio
di fili d’erba
vestiti di stelle
qui
dove le luci della città
non arrivano
a coprirne il sorriso
e ti amerò
come mai ho amato
sussurrandoti favole
nate solo per noi
e la foresta mi perdonerà
domani
quando le dirò
che non ti ho rubato
per una notte
ma per una vita.

Little ebony flower

Little ebony flower
let me stroke
your petals
and drink in
your scent.
The forest will pardon
my love
if for just one night
I steal you from her.
I will lay you down
on a bed of grass
dressed with stars
here
where the city lights
can’t manage
to mask their smiles
and I will love you
as I’ve never loved before
whispering fairytales
that were made up just for us
and the forest will pardon me
when I tell her
that I didn’t steal you
for just a single night
but for a lifetime.
