Original Question: Are there drawbacks to Zen and the school of "just sitting"? Does it lack the necessary causes for insight and wisdom to grow, or can these be realized by different means?

My Reply: Zen meditation is basically to stop the process of perception, which uses the predispositions, emotions, and thinking mind to decipher what we're experiencing.  You can either try to let-go of all thought and concepts, or focus on cutting off the mental function of perception itself. - No matter how you do it, letting-go of perception lets you naturally experience awakening.
