Come Join Nature Photography On MeWe! You are sure to recognize many of our most active members already there, waiting to welcome you. The feedback from those already there has been mostly positive; I will address that momentarily.

Although Google has declared August 2019 the end for G+, with many functions (maps, translation, etc…) already malfunctioning, I have serious doubt in Google’s competence to even keep the platform functioning until next spring, much less next summer. I know it hurts; it pains me deeply too, but G+ is basically on life support now.

Likewise, not only has Google proven completely incompetent in combating pornography, Google recently even accused me (falsely) of posting pornography, after I had responded (elsewhere) to a white supremacist with a Wikipedia link to prove that Nazism is far right~wing ideology. Yes, a white supremacist reported my Wikipedia link about Nazism as pornography and the idiots at Google threatened to ban me. True story, this after I recently spent upwards of 80 hours, over the course of three consecutive weekends, hunting down and banning thousands of the fake profiles that have been posting the pornography and lewd comments that keep appearing in the comments of our community posts. And now those “spam~bots” are back with a vengeance as Google continues to do nothing to address the technical issues at the heart of the problem… giving free reign to Nazis and pornographers alike. Short of continuing to spend as much time as I have to combat the problem, all I can really do at this point is apologize, suggest members disable the comments on their G+ posts and join us on MeWe. Why beat a dead horse when I can build a new home?

As I previously stated, the member feedback about MeWe has been mostly positive. There is no perfect match to G+, but MeWe is as close as I could find in community form and function, and does not appear to be overrun by the hate~groups that are prevalent on some other platforms. We are a community of all ages and many cultures from all over the world. It was important to me to find a new home that represents those values. I hope I have found it in MeWe.

One of the broadest challenges with any platform has been the lack of a translator. If you use a desktop computer, the Google translation page still seems to work well enough to copy and paste text, which enables me to translate and respond to members in languages other than English. However, I do not yet know how to advise members with portable “devices” to address the translation issue. Hopefully, MeWe will soon address this challenge. But again, I ask you to please remember that the G+ translation has been malfunctioning more frequently since Google announced the demise of G+. And if you might have a solution to this problem, I hope you will share your solution with the rest of us.

Some new MeWe members (particularly macro photographers, including myself) are also disappointed that MeWe shrinks the size of our photos down to fit their format. Contrarily, some landscape photographers who sell prints elsewhere welcome that feature, because it saves them the time and trouble of having to shrink photos from their original size to serve as “demos.”

The other issue that has led to much confusion and many questions about MeWe is the cost… MeWe is FREE!!!

MeWe provides 8GB of free storage, with additional storage available at a cost. First thing to understand, unless you shrink your G+ photos down very small before you post them, G+ works exactly the same way, that is why some members have recently had to create new profiles and start over on G+. They ran out of free memory. Secondly, In addition to shrinking the photos, MeWe (like G+) also compresses the jpg files, so that 8GB will store many thousands of photos. It is also possible to delete older/less popular photos from your MeWe cloud to reclaim free memory space. Don’t like the idea of deleting older photos? No problem, read on.

Here is the solution for anyone concerned about the size of photos and/or memory capacity. Flicker also has free membership/free memory, but does not exist in community form. However, it is also possible to post photos to MeWe with a Flicker link, which uses zero MeWe memory. Unlike most other links, photos posted to MeWe with Flicker links appear full size (not thumbnail size) on the community page, and when a member clicks on the photo/link, the photo opens full size (not shrunk) in a new browser tab.

The one other thing I really appreciated about MeWe was being able to make a few suggestions to accommodate our very large community of G+ refugees and receiving what appears to have been an email response from an actual, real live person who promised to pass those suggestions on to MeWe engineers.

Let’s build a new home.
