Thou Shall Not Tresspass
Built in 1913, as a synagogue and then a house of Christian worship, this church was demolished in 2012 with a City of Chicago emergency order after years of controversy. Dr.Martin Luther King spoke here when it was Friendship Baptist Church.
A few fellow photographers and my self had to get past the fence without being seen to find entry in the back. As I flipped through this album I realized how stupid and careless we were. There was no light. One woman brought a headlamp so we held onto each others shoulders and tripped our way through the basement to a staircase. Dripping water, crumbling walls....it was a hazard. Once in the sanctuary the sound of shutters being fingered was so loud it seemed intrusive. Whispering to each other across the room seemed appropriate and respectful. After snaking our way back through the basement we stood out front wondering the fate of this religious icon.
