We had a great first week back with a variety of STEM activities! Students designed, built and tested launchers and tried to build a chain reaction with craft sticks. Soon we will use those same sticks to build bridges and try our skills at some other activiites that did not get done this week.
Computer issues have kept me from being able to load photos for the past several weeks but I did send some photos to Mrs. Domsch who shares them on the Skyline FaceBook page. I attempted to send many more photos that just do not want to load.

Take a look at this video of Kyle and Hunter who after many failed attempts got the cobra weave of craft sticks to work. You get to see energy transferred in a fun activity.

Here are photos from the last several days in 8th grade science learning about static electricity. They are building circuits to make an alarm this week and presenting it to the class.

Due to some computer glitches and not much extra time, I have fallen behind on posting photos of the middle school in action. Here is a variety of photos from 8th grade's magnetic sculptures, 7th graders solar cooking, the MS/HS Vocal Concert, the 8th grade Halloween Party and more. I hope you enjoy them. As you can see we have been busy and this is just a fraction of our activities.

8th grade is wrapping up a unit on chemistry and got to enjoy a gorgeous day outside while testing several different bubble formulas. They tested which formula made the biggest, longest, most colorful, longest lasting and easiest to make bubbles while having some fun with bubble wands. We found that some substances help keep the bubble from bursting and others help in forming bubbles. There were some bubble making masters in the group. The photos do not show very well, but some of the bubbles were huge! I think it is safe to say that they had fun during this exploration.

7th grade did an investigation to see if they could design and test an "igloo" for a penguin. Actually, the penguin was an ice cube shaped liked a penguin and the igloo was made up of a variety of materials to insulate from heat transfer. They get to use engineering skills and  redesign based on results from Friday. What creativity these young scientists showed in their designs! Ask a 7th grader who built the igloos that allowed  their penguin to survive.

This week in Genius Hour with the 8th grade girls they made leather bracelets and attempted some other investigations. Learning to knit was what one student chose, others wanted to be better photographers, still others want to be writers. Quite the talented group of young ladies. If we have some parents, grandparents, and/or guardians who enjoy crafts and would like to share with us, please let me know.
