Daniel Wu discussing how he came to be the main protagonist of the whole entire show, Into The Bad Lands. Originally, he was supposed to be the executive producer. AMC said they wanted Sunny to be Asian. So, they held auditions. They found Asian-Americans who had lots of martial arts skills but little to no acting experience and Asian-Americans who had lots of acting experience but little to no martial arts skills. They convinced Daniel to try out for the role since he had both martial arts skills and acting skills. Low and behold, he got the part.

It's very frustrating and sad that Asian-American males virtually get little to no main protagonist roles on Hollywood movies.

So, when I see Daniel tell this story, it's depressing as well as inspiring. Into The Badlands is breaking barriers for us Asian-American guys (even though keeping the martial arts stereotype) but it's a major step in the right direction.

I hope there will be more and more Asian-American males as the main protagonists in future Hollywood projects.
