Angel Beats episode 8 Dancer In The Dark review.

It starts with a fight. YES! Though like every other fight it could be longer. Though I did notice within the first minute on screen, the doppelganger Kanade has shown way more personality. She freaking giggles. It's adorable. Anyways, the two Kanades battle and the old one loses, I think. They cut the battle and the next scene is the SSS Brigade in the infirmary treating Kanade's wounds.

Skipping the bit where the SSS Brigade has to act normal. They were only doing to not attract the attention of the new and improved Kanade. I want to know how does Yuri know how to write and code software. There has to be a limit to what they can do.

After class they head back to the infirmary to check on Kanade to find her missing. Yuri explains her plans to the Brigade and they set forth to find Kanade. And there goes Yui, annoying the second she opens her mouth. I'm starting to wonder how Hideki and Yui fall for eachother. Nothing about their relationship should even suggest that type of growth towards each other.

Why do they keep shooting at someone that can deflect bullets? Knives seem like to more effective weapon since Kanade always have to dodge those. Having a quiet moment now to discus their possible situation. Adding Naoi to group was the right choice. He's easily the smartest and most knowledgeable about Kanade and her abilities. Naoi is the one able to quickly deduce that the clones would make more clones and lure the Brigade into a trap.

You know that moment in stories where characters just start revealing hidden skills that were never mentioned before? I just hit that point. Matsushita apparently taught them all judo. Would've been nice to know that prior. I mean, it makes sense that if you have someone that knows martial arts and you're constantly fighting against a stronger enemy, you would learn martial arts from that person. But this came out of nowhere. In no point in the series where we lead to believe that any one of these kids knew judo.

Not sure how I feel about the show treating everyone's sacrifice as jokes. Yeah, they'll be fine in about 5 minutes but wasn't things just really intense. Now their deaths are to be laughed at. Pick a tone and run with it. Granted, Naoi hypnotizing Oyama into believing he's a clown and clone Kanade is a sad girl got a chuckle out of me. Naoi may be my second favourite character.

I like how Yuri was prepared to fight Kanade but find annoying she didn't prepare the rest of her team. So clones have a will of their own, weird, but it made the original scream as she absorbed them all. I down for hearing her scream.

And then it ends on a cliffhanger. I hate those. This episode has a similar vibe to the episode Day Game. Somehow, despite being a really important episode, it felt like filler. With Day Game, it was just a matter of not enough happening. With this, I think it was the comedy. It always felt like it was undercutting the tone.

Imagine, if you will, watching the first two episode of season two of Black Lagoon. You got Hansel and Gretel shagging each other, torturing gang members, limbs being cut off and all types of glorious gory fun. And then they cut to Rock and Benny doing a three stooges act for no reason. That's what these episodes feel like to me. It takes a serious moment and curb stomps it for a joke that usually doesn't land for me.

All in all, 3/5. Tone problems again hamper what would have been a great episode. The cliffhanger ending does have me wondering what will be left of Kanade after she absorbs the clones. Any jokes that involves Yui will immediately sour my mood. And I think I'm starting to want Yuzuru and Ayato to become gay.
