I was hunting Werewolves in the mountains and you see it. I was cutting through the werewolves with a large, oversized sword. And you were secretly watching and you have heard about me before because some nations are trying to hunt me down. And they all called me "The Black Swordsman"

To The Profile Of The Hawk Of Light

Name : Griffith

Gender : male

Appearance : Griffith is of average height, possessing an athletic muscular build and a somewhat pale skin tone. He has long, curly white hair (often seen straight in the 1997 anime) and blue eyes. He is noted to be a very beautiful man, and has feminine features that manyMidlanders have commented surpass that of women's; some can barely recognize that he is male. After regaining his physical form during the Incarnation Ceremony, Griffith appears the same, though his eyes now have slit pupils to reflect his true nature as one of theGod Hand. In battle, Griffith wears a set of silvery-white armor with his iconic hawk-beak helmet.
Personality : Griffith has always carried himself in a well-mannered, exemplary fashion, well-nigh indistinguishable from that of nobility; his mannerisms, coupled with his keen intellect, often leave people astounded at his humble origins. His most notable trait, however, is his otherworldly charisma. Leadership has always come naturally to him. Those who choose to follow Griffith typically are overcome with emotions upon their first encounter with him, either entranced by the thought of splendor and grandeur at his side, or reeled in by his strong sense of ambition and conviction.
Even as a child, Griffith's strong sense of self and ambition were apparent. It is in the back alleys of his childhood city that he first sets his sights on acquiring his own kingdom. He has a multi-faceted demeanor in the earlier years of the Band of the Hawk, at times appearing carefree, and almost child-like, while other times demonstrating ferocious killing intent and deadliness. This juxtaposition of undeniable distinction and common-born idiosyncrasies is what attracts people of varying walks of life to his mercenary band. In spite of his large following, in his earlier years, Griffith's ego is never noticeably inflated; after one of the Band of the Hawk's earlier skirmishes, he takes the time to lament the death of a ten-year-old Hawk-in-training, remembering the boy's name and even expressing regret over compelling the boy to join his cause.

The deaths of those fighting for his dream take a toll on him, however. In order to cope with their loses and ensure they aren't in vain, Griffith slowly begins to rely on cold logic and reasoning, placing higher precedence on success than compassion—paradoxically expressing compassion for his comrades by suppressing it. It is not long before he is completely apathetic to his comrades' deaths. Even then, he still possesses his humanity, and questions his immoral schemes, at one point inquiring of Guts if he is a cruel person. The high esteem to which he is held does eventually have an effect on his ego, however. Despite the affection he displays towards some comrades, Griffith comes to believe that they are beneath him, nonetheless, considering them nothing more than tools for achieving his dream, with none of them fitting his criteria of a true friend.

Among the tens of thousands of allies and enemies he encounters, Guts is the only one who manages to stifle Griffith's calculated decision making and cause him to forget about his dream. He explicitly displays care for Guts, on several occasions risking his life to save the swordsman and even losing his composure upon Guts' endangerment. It is because of this that his ego crumbles after Guts' departure; so accustomed to seizing all of his desires, Griffith forgoes all logical reasoning upon losing his most treasured soldier, throwing away everything he has obtained and endangering the Band of the Hawk because of merely one loss. When he invokes the Eclipse and is presented with a reflection of his true self, he comes to terms with who he truly is—a slave to the god named dream, first and foremost—and the consequences of achieving his dream, subsequently sacrificing his comrades and his humanity out of his own free will.

Griffith's rebirth as Femto brings about the crystallization of his ambition, now undeterred by moral inhibitions and focused solely on the realization of his dream, fully aware of the nature of humanity and the role he is destined to play as its ultimate judge. Having abandoned his humanity during the Eclipse, Femto is emotionless, only ever showing subtle expressions while feigning humanity under the guise of Griffith. He has stated that, save for the residual feelings of his Demon Child vessel, he personally feels nothing—with his heart now frozen as a member of the God Hand. His efforts to appear human frequently fail, however, as Midlanders have often times stated that Griffith now possesses an untouchable, inhuman presence. Regardless, Femto is still, in essence, pre-Eclipse Griffith, devoid only of his humanity and emotions, still bearing his ambition, ego, and memories.

Skills And Abilities :
Supernatural Charisma : Even prior to his rebirth, Griffith is a magnetic figure who easily reels in admiration and devotion. His angelic beauty in conjunction with his allure and persuasiveness make his presence undeniable and his ambitious dream ever so captivating. The range of his charm is only enhanced by his legendary success, with people of all walks of life admiring his high climb from nothing. Amongst even the Midland nobility, Griffith operates as efficiently as he does in battle, his illustriousness winning over the affection of nobles and commoners alike. Griffith's reincarnation brings about the tenfold increase in his already staggering charisma. With his return to the physical realm, the idolization he once garnered warps into exaltation, his presence now rightly described as inhuman by affected devotees. Inducing submission into others has become an effortless task for him; even highly revered individuals collapse to their knees upon their first encounter with him. Most telling of his newfound influence is the alliance he has formed between demonkind and humanity, leading both the sinful black and blind white sheep, in accordance with theprophecy of the Holy See's scriptures.

Master Swordsman : Griffith has always been an expert in the field of swordsmanship. With his precision piercing, he has swiftly dispatched enemies with one stab from his sword, capable of easily puncturing vitals if he so chooses. To combat denser, larger swords, he uses a skillful parrying technique, which involves using the opponent's sword weight against them, deflecting the larger blade down the side of his lithe sabre and creating openings for offensive strikes.

Immense Strength : Griffith's cutting power is also considerable; he is able to completely sever Nosferatu Zodd's arm in a pincer strike with Guts, making him one of the few humans, at that time, to inflict heavy damage on the apostle.

Enhanced Agility : Griffith has been shown to be very fast and agile, being able to easily react and dodge attacks.

Black Berserker's Profile
The Berserker Armor is a cursed suit of highly durable armor, one of several of its kind, forged by the dwarves. It removes the wearer's subconscious limitations (including pain) which prevent them from using their full potential, thus giving them extraordinary levels of strength and endurance. The armor can temporarily fix injuries: binding bleeding wounds, reinforcing broken bones, and forcibly fixing dislocated joints, piercing the flesh with thin barbs and spikes if necessary. Rather than actually healing its wearer, the armor heals itself when pierced by powerful thrust attacks.

In addition to its extremely dangerous nature, the armor can also induce insanity and "Berserker Rage" by drawing out the wearer's fears and therefore dissolving the differentiation between friend and foe (hence the armor's name). It can also cause chronic mental deterioration (for example, Guts' Beast of Darkness, which becomes stronger as time passes).

Upon inducing berserker rage, the armor's helm seems to take on the appearance of the wearer's inner beast. In Guts' case, the helmet and bevor are shaped like the Beast of Darkness' head and can move and function as a mouth, capable of biting enemies. When the armor's curse is active, the helm's eye sockets glow red and Guts' face cannot be seen, but when he is in partial control of his sanity, Guts' face is partially visible within the helm's maw.

After being used by the Skull Knight, the Berserker Armor was kept by Flora the Witch for many years. It is given to Guts after Flora's residence, the Spirit Tree, is invaded by Griffith's Apostles, the Neo Band of the Hawk, who were ordered to kill her under the belief that she would later become a threat to Griffith's power. DespiteGrunbeld's immense strength, even in his apostle dragon form, Guts easily withstands his attacks and lands a few hits using the Berserker Armor.

The Beast of Darkness is a personification of Guts' wrath and bloodlust, born from the trauma of what he's experienced in the Eclipse, the stress of losing his allies and Griffith's betrayal driving him to homicidal rage. Like Guts, the Beast hates Griffith and refers to him as a light that burns. As some restless spirits explained, the beast becomes stronger each time Guts takes a life and thus subconsciously encouraged the swordsman to commit mass slaughter for two years. It was only when Guts starts to regain bits of humanity that the beast refuses to allow this and makes numerous attempts to force Guts to resume their committing of carnage, seeing Casca and Guts' new allies as frail enablers of its host's morality that it believes can be remedied by killing them all. But it also encourages Guts to cherish them as their deaths would drive Guts into a deep enough despair that the beast would swallow him whole and resume the hunt of Griffith unopposed. The beast seems to be impatiently crafty as well, as once he told Guts that he would start to obey him and breathe lightly to store his power. But whenever Guts uses the Berserker Armor, especially during the night of a full moon where its influence is strongest, the beast would try to take control and increases in size with each use.

Similar to the Idea of Evil, which was born from the collective subconscious of humanity, the beast is more like a personal construct of Guts' subconscious. While not seen in the earlier story arcs, his presence is felt whenever Guts fights an Apostle and goes berserk. The Beast of Darkness is popularly but mistakenly referred to as "Hellhound".The beast appears to be influenced by the myth of werewolves and Norse mythology, namely Fenrir, who is chained until the end of the world, and Sköll, who is destined to swallow the sun.The Beast of Darkness is referenced in the video game Bloodborne, via a boss called The Watchdog of the Old Lords, and also appears as a mini-boss in Dark Souls 3. It most resembles The Beast of Darkness when it was consumed in flames within Guts' mind. The Beast of Darkness bears some similarities with the Jungian concept of the Shadow, being a part of the mind where all of the worst parts of a person coalesce into a conscious form. A Shadow will only get stronger the more it is denied, as the Beast of Darkness does.

Hair Colour

Guts is shown to be a rather tall man at 6'3" (190 cm) with a strong, heavily scarred muscular frame. His black hair is fitted with constant, short pointy spikes, already built from short hair itself. At the base of his hairline, he allows a few strands to hang just above his forehead. It most closely resembles a crew cut. While he appears to be in his twenties at first glance, he is actually only Fifteen at this point and has been hardened by a lifetime of war. He bears a scar, crossing the bridge of his nose. His right eye is closed indefinitely. In place of his severed left forearm, Guts outfitted it with a prostheses, fitted with an arm cannon which has a magnet in the palm portion capable of grasping the rather large blade he carries with him.

During the Golden Age, before losing use of his right eye and left forearm, Guts originally wore a tan-to-brown colored set of armor that transitions from leather to a harder material. In addition to this equipment, he is mostly seen in battle wearing a uniquely shaped head-guard that protects all but his mouth. He later discards the helmet upon leaving the Hawks (along with the sword he was using up to that point, due to having been broken in battle by Boscogn).

Guts' armor is later updated in the birth ceremony chapter by Rickert, causing its plates to bear great resemblance to the Berserker Armor that he would wear later on. Shortly following the battle against Slan, and later, against Grunbeld, Guts switches the regular plates of his armor for the Berserker Armor. The first use of the armor causes the Beast of Darkness to shape the armor, and also turns a portion of his black hair white.

Physical Abilities
Guts possesses titanic strength gained from a harsh childhood lived with a band of mercenaries. Guts is seen by many as the personification of endurance and human willpower. Somehow Guts always manages to survive, even risking his life needlessly, as long as it was a risk that lay along a path to victory. He has engaged and successfully triumphed against many human opponents such as Bazuso, Zondark and Boscogn. However, his greatest battles are against the horrific beings known as Apostles, who can transform into giant demons, easily surpassing groups of men.

At the age of six, Guts began his training with Gambino, using a sword forged for adults even when the mercenaries watching suggested that he should use a sword more suited to his size. Even though he clearly struggles to wield the blade, Guts persists, managing to scratch Gambino's chin. Guts continues his training to the point where he can hold his own against full grown men. At the age of nine, he enters his first battle with a longsword and makes his first kill, albeit indirectly. However, he is later hit by a flail in the back and is almost killed, but is saved by Gambino's intervention.

At the age of eleven, he is shown to have improved significantly. Able to wield his longsword with only a single hand, Guts goes as far as to kill a mounted general. Later, in self-defense, his body reacts on its own to defend himself against seven wolves, a feat made all the more impressive by two broken ribs and blood loss caused by a bolt wound, all received earlier after fleeing the band of mercenaries he was traveling with.

By his late teens, Guts is seen wielding a sword three times larger and three times heavier than a standard great sword. When none of all the men present upon a battlefield were willing to duel Bazuso, who has reputedly slain thirty men, Guts confidently steps forward and controls the whole fight. Though he almost dies due to his recklessness, his strength and willpower managed to see him through the fight.

As the Black Swordsman, Guts has gained herculean strength. He was able to punch a hole in a wall without using his prosthetic hand, was swinging the cumbersome Dragonslayer at speeds faster than the human eye can track and is capable enough to split a rock in two as stated by Serpico. His tenacity has also increased significantly, to the point where he outright resorts to injuring himself in order to gain the upper hand as shown when he fought against Rosine and The Count.

Sometime after being picked up by another band of mercenaries, and later travelling alone, Guts, with a smaller and duller sword, was able to defeat a larger armored man with a mace, despite the fact that his sword was completely unable to break through his opponent's armor. This demonstrates Guts' ability to adapt with different, and even inferior, weapons. He also incorporates a left wrist guard to assist in blocking enemy attacks by placing it behind the blade of his sword rather than leverage his strength upon the handle.

In his early twenties, as the Black Swordsman, Guts is shown to be a true master swordsman, even considered by the Count to be the greatest of all humans. Guts is shown to be able to block attacks faster than the human eye can see, and all with the insanely heavy Dragonslayer. With his vast arsenal, Guts is shown to be able to dispatch foes at any range, each weapon option growing in lethality as he gets closer.

Dragonslayer: With the mighty blade forged by Godo, Guts can cleave through both armored knights and their horses with ease. The Dragonslayer is also extremely effective against all but the most heavily armored Apostles. The sword is so heavy that it can slice through regular weapons and armor in a single slash. Guts has wielded it to such effect, that the vast amount of blood of Apostles and demons have given the Dragonslayer the ability to have great effect on astral beings. Guts has also learned to use it defensively. When held in front of him, it's broad enough to act as a shield from arrows and bolts, even diverting lightning into the ground by using it as a lightning rod. Guts also uses it to cushion his impact by laying the sword level with his body and letting it absorb the impact first. By using the Dragonslayer, he is able to leave cracks onZodd's Kushan great sword. However, he lacked the force to damage the Apostle spawn Mozgus' armored scales. The Berserker Armor turns this weapon into a tool of immense power by releasing the limiters on Guts' strength. Guts was able to shatter Grunbeld's shield and war hammer after donning the armor for the first time. Grunbeld commented that he was able to repel cannonballs with the shield. Guts was even able to crack his apostle's form's skin, which was said to be harder than steel.
With this, Guts is Immune to any Dragon or Dragonslayer Abilities.

Cannon Arm: The cannon in Guts' mechanical arm is one of Godo's inventions. It is given to him alongside other tools to help Guts on his quest for revenge. Guts operates the cannon by loading powder into the barrel and ramming the cannonball into the barrel with a special ramrod. Guts then pulls a rope/cord that pulls his mechanical arm's hand above the barrel which then leads to the powder igniting and then firing. Guts makes use of this cord in situations where he cannot let go of the Dragonslayer or he can't use his right hand by pulling the cord with his teeth and firing the cannon that way. Guts' cannon arm is shown to be powerful enough to blast through apostles or at the very least deal severe damage. Quite often he manages to fool his enemies into thinking he's out of weapons or too badly injured to continue fighting, though quite literally he still has this potent weapon up his sleeve. He can also attack enemies from opposite directions or do a sword-cannon combo by reverse gripping the Dragonslayer then fire his cannon (with his sword holding hand) and use the recoil to power up his cleave either forward or spinning motion. One of the few drawbacks to this powerful weapon is that the recoil produced by its firing hurts Guts' shoulder. Guts complained of this problem the first time he used it by saying that there was too much gunpowder, although he has not made any mention of this problem since then, so it can be assumed that he fixed the problem with the gunpowder. Guts is also hampered by the fact that he can only carry a limited amount of cannon balls at one time. The cannon must also be reloaded after each firing, which in the heat of battle, is almost impossible.

Repeater Crossbow: The Repeater Crossbow is another one of Godo's inventions. Guts receives this weapon before he sets out on his quest of revenge as the Black Swordsman. Guts uses the crossbow by attaching it to his mechanical arm and filling its magazine full of bolts like a modern day machine gun. Guts then aims down the sight and turns a crank on the weapon with his right hand to let fly a volley of bolts. Guts uses it extensively up until the point in the story where he acquires the Berserker Armor, which ends up to where Guts almost never has to use it. Rickert also has a version of this which he used to protect the carriage when it was being assaulted by harpies.

Throwing Knives: A weapon first used by Judeau, Guts uses them in his memory, primarily using their stealth advantages. Their greatest use depended on accuracy and vital points being hit, and they are of minimal effect against Apostles, but against smaller targets can be quite lethal. Guts appears to have very great aim and skill using them, landing two knives straight into a pair of soldiers' foreheads in his first scene using them.

Miniature Bomb: These small mine-shaped bombs are a later addition to Guts' arsenal. Guts first uses this potent weapon to slow down the goat demon during the Conviction arc in order to then cleave its head off. These bombs are very powerful for their size, but within a very small, contained radius, and usually do not have the power to kill their intended targets unless struck in a vital area. These bombs are usually used to slow down or distract a larger enemy in order to counter with a deadly swing from the Dragonslayer. A slight problem with the bombs is that if the powder inside the bombs gets wet, the explosive power is diminished greatly as noted by Isidro when he injured the Kushan wizard who was surrounded by water. Guts has given these bombs to Isidro for the foreseeable future.

Berserker Armor: Gifted to Guts by Mavis, the Berserker Armor acts as his trump card against powerful enemies. When used, it completely numbs his senses to pain, and enhances his every movement. Guts is able to do multiple somersaults even while wielding the heavy armor and wielding the Dragonslayer. The armor itself unlocks the user's muscles, allowing them to use their full strength, at the risk of permanent damage to both their body and mind. Guts is either under the influence of his inner beast or kept sane by Mavis, as hinted by Daiba that there's a power difference when he loses his rage state. With the help of the Berserker Armor, Guts is able to crack Grunbeld's diamond-like exterior, and make quick work of multiple enemies like the Makara. The cons of this armor greatly outweigh the pros, however, as without a sense of pain, Guts is unable to recognize when his body is in mortal danger and will soon fail. When a debilitating injury, such as a broken leg, is received, the armor forcibly seals it by extending metal spikes into the area, keeping it in one piece long enough to continue the fight, although afterward this does more harm than good. In short, Guts while wearing this armor is able to fight at his full, nearly superhuman capabilities, but is all the more vulnerable.
