Happy Monday everyone!

There are so many healthy probiotics available today. What are your favorites? Probiotics are essential for gut health, immune system health and optimal brain functioning! Research shows that home made fermented foods have more healthy bacteria than any supplement you can buy in the store. I like all the probiotics in this image - I take probiotic supplements when I don't have time to make or get home made fermented foods.

What is your approach to gut health? On a future episode of Health Safari TV, I'll show you how to make some fermented foods. It's WAY easier than you might imagine!

I love using white sage to cleanse my house! Used in rituals since prehistoric times as a way to cleanse the spirit, new research demonstrates that plant smoke is HIGHLY effective at killing bacteria.

A team of Iranian researchers published the research in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology - note that Iran has a long history of healing plant medicine and culturally values health and healing.

The researchers suggest that medicine should consider plant smoke as therapy: "The advantages of smoke-based remedies are rapid delivery to the brain, more efficient absorption by the body and lower costs of production." #healing #health #plant #medicine #smudging #white #sage #smoke #enthnobotany #botany #cool #science #halfchristmas #organic

DO YOU TAKE AN #OMEGA-3 SUPPLEMENT?
Taking an Omega-3 fatty acid supplement is a great way to improve your health! Humans lived naturally for thousands of years with an #Omega-3 to #Omega-6 ratio of about 1:1, which is optimal for the body. Now, we have so much Omega-6 overload in our food that the average American is WAY out of balance with 15X more Omega 6's in the bloodstream!

Even for people who eat an excellent, #organic diet, #Omega-3 is the often the ESSENTIAL #nutrient that they have overlooked! Especially for vegetarians, taking an Omega-3 supplement can dramatically improve health.

The proven #health benefits of Omega-3 supplementation: it can optimize your cholesterol levels, improve your cognitive state and brain health, protect your #heart, reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. From a performance point of view, it can make you smarter and able to think faster! A #BRAIN deprived of Omega-3's runs in SLOW MOTION!

ONLY marine sources of Omega-3 fatty acids are linked to these health benefits, because the animal-based EPA and DHA give the benefits, NOT the plant-based ALA that you find in chia seeds, etc. BUT, for you #vegetarians, I found a vegetarian-certified source of Omega-3 that contains the EPA and DHA you need- find it above - made from #algae!

The source is everything with Omega-3's and you have to be very careful because the good supplements come from the ocean...as we know the ocean is very polluted these days.

I have extensively researched the quality and purity reports of Omega-3 products and the best I've hunted down are posted above. One by Dr. Dave's Best and one by @nordicnaturals ! Thanks for making the best!!!

Eating #salmon is also a way to get Omega-3s into your diet, but again it's all about the source, because the ocean is polluted. I try to get #wild salmon from the North Atlantic.

MANY KINDS OF #MISO !!! Yesterday I posted my favorite miso soup recipe. Today I wanted to share a bit more about miso. #fermented #food !

Miso soup, part of #Japanese food and culture since at least the 6th century, is traditionally created by aging (fermenting) a mixture of #soybeans and other ingredients in cedarwood kegs for 6 months to 3 years or more. Here are some of the different kinds of miso! Try them all:

#BROWN RICE MISO
Ingredients: Organic whole soybeans, Organic brown rice, water, sea salt and #koji

#BARLEY MISO:
Ingredients: Organic whole soybeans, Organic barley, water, sea salt, and koji

#HATCHO MISO:
Made solely from whole organic soybeans, water, sea salt, and koji. Strong tasting! Aged 3 years instead of 2. Hard core.

#CHICKPEA MISO:
A rebellious, modern day twist on miso that uses chickpeas instead soybeans.

Miso is made using a two-part fermentation. In the first part, steamed grains (typically rice or barley, but in some cases soybeans) are inoculated with the mold Aspergillus oryzae and incubated for about 48 hours to make koji, which serves as a source of enzymes. In the second part, the koji is mixed with cooked soybeans, salt, water, and seed miso, packed into large vats, and traditionally fermented for 6-18 months. Lactic acid bacteria and yeasts also play important roles in this brine fermentation. The final paste-like product is ready to use.

Also, for more about miso soup and the associated #macrobiotics way of eating see @kushiinstitute! I can't wait to visit them next month :)

Miso Soup Recipe - 5 ingredients, 5 steps, done within 15 minutes.
YOU can make a delicious Japanese soup :)
Here is my favorite recipe:

FIVE EASY INGREDIENTS!
4 cups water
1/2 cup chopped green chard or other sturdy green
1/2 cup chopped green onion
4 Tbsp organic miso paste
1 sheet nori (dried seaweed), cut into large pieces
Optional: 1/4 cup organic tofu…

FIVE EASY STEPS!
Place water in a medium, stainless steel sauce pan and bring to a low simmer.
Add your nori and simmer for 5-7 minutes.
While you wait, place 3 Tbsp of miso into a small bowl, add a little hot water and whisk until smooth.
Add the miso to the soup and stir. (This way it won’t clump.)
Add remaining ingredients to the pot and cook for another 5 minutes or so. Add more miso if needed and your favorite sea salt. Serve warm :)

You can also make this soup with more vegetables if you want!

MACADEMIA MADNESS! Creamy, crunchy #macadamia nuts contain the greatest amount of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat of any nuts. They have been shown to lower bad cholesterol levels and improve heart health! Macademia nuts are native to Australia and also grow in Hawaii. The nuts grow in extremely hard kernels which are very difficult to crack open.
PHYTONUTRIENTS: Tocopherols and tocotrienols that help remove free radicals (which oxidize blood fats and damage healthy cells).
