Avi Farage has been doling out cups of fresh-squeezed pomegranate juice and hot sahlab at his makeshift stand at the entrance to the Old City, in #Safed, #Israel, for over eight years.

Born just a few hundred meters away, among the alleyways, ancient synagogues and art galleries, the garrulous Tzfat native has been a welcoming sight to both locals as well as busloads of tourists from around the world, eager to visit the 16th century birthplace of Jewish mysticism - Kabbalah - and far older historical sites within.

What many visitors are unaware of, however, is that Avi and his stand are located at the site where his cousin, 18-year-old Yehoshua Farage - Ohana, fell in battle during an extended firefight between some 300 pre-IDF Hagana forces defending the Jewish Quarter's 5,000 residents, and close to 3,000 foreign and local Arabs besieging them during the 1948 War of Independence.

"May we only live in peace..." Avi concluded with a sigh, as he shared the intertwined and hard-fought personal and national history of the modern-day "Capital of the Galilee," and ancient holy city.

A plaque commemorating the fallen soldier is affixed to the bullet hole - scarred wall behind Avi's head, offering a poignant reminder of the sorrow behind his generous smile. Please stay professional: no politics, trash talk, or dissing other shooters. Here's my first batch, shot on manual mode and edited in #SnapSpeed and/or #Lightroom Mobile.
