We can find gems and treasures everywhere here on Vancouver Island. In today’s post we return to a place we’ve visited often before, the tiny historic train station in the heart of the community of Cowichan Station on Vancouver Island. These shots were captured last fall as the leaves were turning.

Please visit our blog "The Tiny Train Station":

3 Days Shooting Death Valley in HDR

My Jeep and I are just home from shooting Death Valley again.  I hit some new spots and am super happy with the photos!

This shot is an HDR taken at Badwater (the lowest spot in North America at 282 feet below sea level) in pre-dawn light just as the moon is about to set.

Over on the blog are other HDR photos from Death Valley, including some of those cray cray moving rocks from the Racetrack under the full moon; http://www.essenceinphotography.com/photographing-death-valley-in-hdr/

I tried something different for this photo safari.  I went looking for bridges over the Hunter River on Google Maps. I was then able to do a small recon on the site from the street view.  Obtaining the nearest farm address I punched it into my GPS and went straight to the location.  Usually I just go for a drive and stop when something grabs my eye.  This way has saved me quite a bit of time.  Mind you, I still did stop when I saw something interesting along the way.

HDR from 3 bracketed exposures +/- 2 EV and processed in Nik HDR Efex Pro 2 and Lightroom 5.

Built in 1892 this is the Elderslie Bridge over the Hunter River, Stanhope, NSW, Australia

Courtyard of Leaves-Angkor Wat

It's another bucket-list event; Angkor Wat. I guess it's on most photographers lists so I'm grateful I had my turn at it.

What's the one thing most memorable about the 2-days I was there shooting it? Extreme heat!  Each day I had to have my Tuk Tuk driver take me back to the hostel about 10 in the morning.  Yes, it's THAT hot!  When sunset time came around I didn't even think about going back out.

Okay, you're thinking I'm a pansy whiner.

This HDR Photo

3 shots (-2, 0, +2). Merged and processed in Lightroom using the Perfect HDR Workflow. Topaz ReStyle finished it.

Shadowed Planet

Minding my own business among the salt formations photographing sunset. This is the photo I was making just before I captured yesterday's surprising photo. That's the one where that Salt Nymph unexpectedly showed up posing nude in the middle of Death Valley. This one isn't quite as exciting, is it boys?

The rest of my Death Valley HDR gallery is here http://bit.ly/HDR-DeathValleyGallery

For shots into the sun, like this, I usually need to bracket at least 5 shots, 2 stops apart.  So the bracketing for this is (-4,-2, 0, +2, +4). Then I processed it in Lightroom using the Perfect HDR Workflow, did a BW conversion and used Topaz ReStyle to get the final look.

Rodeo Beach

Way at the other end of this beach are some tasty sea stacks. Photographers seem to always go there.  The reason I say that is because I've never seen ANY images from the north end of the beach.  I mean, check it out; google up "image:rodeo beach" and it's all sea stacks and some misc nature shots.

Before driving out here, that's exactly what I did on Google to learn a little more about what I might find to shoot here.  Never knew I'd find this!

We are firmly in the heart of winter here on Vancouver Island these days. Sometimes we get lucky with a weekend day where the weather is bright and sunny, literally beckoning us to grab our camera and head outdoors to take in the sights and adventures here on the island. In today’s post we head over to the tiny town of Cowichan Bay, a lovely little town full of rich island character and scenes that are truly quintessentially Vancouver Island.

Charcoal Kilns @ Death Valley

Back in the 1870's these charcoal kilns were built to make charcoal which was needed for the copper & silver mining going on nearby.  They operated only three years.

Today these 10 kilns lined up in the Panamint Mountains remain in perfect condition.  Walk inside any of them and the smell of smokey mesquite lingers strong.

This is a three shot bracket (-2, 0, +2) merged and processed in Lightroom using the Perfect HDR Workflow.  It was finished in Topaz ReStyle.

Dusk on the Racetrack Playa

Last week I was in Death Valley again. The highlight of the trip was the time I spent out at the Racetrack during the night of the full moon. This is where the rocks mysteriously move across the perfectly level dry lake bed leaving this visual evidence etched into the ground they have covered.

This photo I took just after the sun dropped below the mountains. The treat in store for me later this night is experiencing the light of the full moon on the playa.  Those photos, made in that magical light, are on the blog: http://www.essenceinphotography.com/photographing-death-valley-in-hdr/
