1971 FORD MUSTANG MACH 1 FASTBACK
The world was changing in 1971, and Ford’s Mustang had received one of its most dramatic redesigns when the new models arrived. Reportedly redesigned for the stillborn 1971 Ford SCCA Trans-Am series program and foretold by 1970 Shelby styling cues, the body surfaces were now flatter and more streamlined. The new Fastback blended almost seamlessly into the rear fenders. On Mustangs built with the Mach 1 package like this car, it was part of the final salvo of the rapidly concluding muscle-car era. The Mach 1 equipment package was primarily used for performance-optioned Mustangs, both big-block and small-block models, and featuring graphics, optional spoilers, and flush-mounted NACA ductwork that had come from the aerospace industry. Though the Mach 1 option would continue to be available until 1978, the higher-compression examples from 1971 are considered the best of this body design during the 1971-73 model releases. This Grabber Blue car has been subjected to a frame-off restoration, with new stainless trim, weatherstripping, chrome and rubber gaskets. Less than 1,000 miles have been put on its rebuilt driveline, which consists of the well-respected 351 Cleveland V-8 backed by a C6 Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic with floor shift and a highway-friendly 3.00:1-geared differential. The brakes and master cylinder are both new, with a re-cored radiator installed up front. To enhance its performance, an open element chrome air cleaner now covers the carburetor. Documented with a Marti report, this car comes with SelectAire, bucket seats finished in Black and a console equipped with a raised center armrest. With Ford as a company itself rapidly changing for the needs of the 1970s, the Mach 1 Mustang stubbornly helped hold a standard of performance high during this fading moment of power. Comprehensive frame-on restoration
- Refreshed in original Grabber Blue
- Less than 1,000 miles on rebuilt engine and transmission
- 351 CI Cleveland engine
- C6 Cruise-O-Matic transmission
- 3.00 rear end
- Re-cored radiator
- New brakes and master cylinder
- Factory Selectaire
- New OEM stainless trim, chrome and rubber gaskets
- New weather stripping
- Marti Report
