No Affinity Group meeting today

Hello everyone! I apologize; we do not have an Affinity Group meeting today, despite our original plan to have one. I am unable to facilitate, as Iowa is having their annual school administrators conference today.

We will be back in November.

We had a great multi-location OER Summit on June 11. Big thanks to Josh Allen and Maryann Angeroth for their coordination of the project, as well as Stacy/Lynn, Brea/Melissa, Robbie/Jason, and Craig for their location coordination. Also a big thanks to Sarah Weston, Sara Trettin, and CK-12 for traveling in to present at the Council Bluffs location (and those I didn't get to see at the other locations).

We are in the process of processing our recordings and getting them ready to share out. Here is the first one, from Creative Commons on... Creative Commons.

Professional Development Opportunity!

AEA Learning Online is presenting Designing Online Lessons, a 2-credit course that looks at the development of both spoken/recorded lessons and text-based lessons, starts next Wednesday. The course is available for the discounted cohort price ($70 total for 2 license renewal, $170 for 2 Drake credits).

The course features a new instructor for us. Julie Buerman is a chemistry teacher at Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School, and has been blending her class for several years. Having taught this class locally for Cedar Rapids teachers, she is now teaching it for cohort teachers.

This course also looks at the new SoftChalk Cloud version 11. SoftChalk Cloud is an excellent, easy-to-use lesson building tool that makes the development of OER extremely easy to do. If you have ever wanted to get acquainted with SoftChalk Cloud and use it for blending your class, this is the way to go!

I take part in the CCSSO webinars regarding OER. Typically CCSSO works with state departments of education instead of ESAs, but that isn't always the case.

At any rate, the upcoming webinar is more of an informational one than the typical state-by-state sharing meetings, so I thought I'd share the info with you. It is focused on the vetting of OER, and includes two LEA officials with experience.

I'm pasting the note below in case you find this of interest. It has the date/time and connection information in it.

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you our next #GoOpen call on Friday, May 25th from 1-2 pm ET. The specifics are as follows:

Focus: Vetting of High-Quality Open Educational Resources
Questions we will answer:
What does research say about the impact of high-quality instructional materials?
What role are SEAs and LEAs playing in evaluating the quality of OER?
What models are being employed at the state and district level for vetting?
Where are state and district vetting process aligned or coordinated currently? What are the opportunities for alignment or coordination in the process? Challenges?

Speakers: Alan Griffin (Utah) and Dan Lawson of Tullahoma City Schools (TN)

*Note that we will be discussing both state and district vetting processes on this call. Moving forward, we will still host state- and district-specific calls, but this topic emerged as an opportunity for a joint discussion.

We hope that this conversation will be insightful and helpful. To make this call as engaging as possible, please come prepared with questions, relevant examples, or related topics for the group. If you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Recording for May 9, 2018. I'm getting a kick out of Zoom's auto-transcription, which is a bit off.

Hi Everyone,

For the past four years, New America has been tracking the growing use of #OER across the country. +Kristina Ishmael 's new interactive guide has been built with the goal of reflecting and sharing that work. Take some time to explore and share. There are some super resources here! https://www.newamerica.org/in-depth/prek12-oer-in-practice/districts/ #prek12oer #edchat
