Well the rumors were right, Davis Love is back as captain of the 2016 American Ryder Cup team. The new committee style selection method seems to have been overcome with melancholy. It didn’t veer off the ‘old is better’ route they took when picking Tom Watson as captain. The reasoning this time was that Love had the U.S. team on the brink of victory in 2012 only to have the players, as individuals, falter on the last day. It wasn’t, the committee opined, Davis’ fault. I guess this is a ‘do over’, a chance to show that he, Davis, could somehow make right what happened in 2012. What happens if he doesn’t? Is the selection by committee just as flawed as the PGA leadership is in picking captains? Is this the ‘a camel is a horse designed by a committee metaphor? Let’s hope not.
